Friday The 13th Movie Description:
Crystal Lake's history of murder doesn't deter counselors from setting up a summer camp in the woodsy area. Superstitious locals warn against it, but the fresh-faced young people -- Jack (Kevin Bacon), Alice (Adrienne King), Bill (Harry Crosby), Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) and Ned (Mark Nelson) -- pay little heed to the old-timers. Then they find themselves stalked by a brutal killer. As they're slashed, shot and stabbed, the counselors struggle to stay alive against a merciless opponent.
Friday the 13th is a 1980 American independent slasher film produced and directed by Sean S. Cunningham, written by Victor Miller, and starring Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Mark Nelson, Jeannine Taylor, Robbi Morgan, and Kevin Bacon. Its plot follows a group of teenage camp counselors who are murdered one by one by an unknown killer while they are attempting to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past.
Prompted by the success of John Carpenter's Halloween (1978), director Cunningham put out an advertisement to sell the film in Variety in early 1979, while Miller was still drafting the screenplay. After casting the film in New York City, filming took place in New Jersey in the summer of 1979, on an estimated budget of $550,000. A bidding war ensued over the finished film, ending with Paramount Pictures acquiring the film for domestic distribution, while Warner Bros. secured international distribution rights.
Released on May 9, 1980, Friday the 13th was a major box office success, grossing $59.8 million worldwide. Critical response was divided, with some praising the film's cinematography and score, while numerous others derided it for its depiction of graphic violence. Aside from being the first independent film of its kind to secure distribution in the U.S. by a major studio, its box office success led to a long series of sequels, a crossover with the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series, and a 2009 series reboot. A direct sequel, Friday the 13th Part 2, was released one year later.

Adrienne King (Alice) told in an interview, she took her mother to a test screening they did for some studio executives/ movie distributors and such. When Jason popped up at the end, her mother let out a terrified scream (which is quite appropriate as you might agree 🤪). When the lights turned on, she leaned over to her mom and said: "I think you just sold the movie".
So the snake was a pet of a crew member. He agreed to allow them to use the snake for this scene but was told they would trade it for a fake for killing it. But didn't. The owner sued them for it
I am not a snake person but that was someone's pet. That was a cruel thing to do.

I watched it in the theater when it first came out. Trust me, Jason jumping out of the water at the end is one of the best jump scares in movie history. It scared the crap out of everyone.
While the characters are hella cliche by today's standards, I will say 3 awesome things about this movie:
1. The soundtrack really elevates the film
2. Them building up the one girl in the beginning as the final girl only for the movie to say sike and kill her early
3. The killer pov shots and hiding who the killer really is (especially nowadays where people who know Jason but haven't seen the original expect it to be Jason and not his mother) It being his mom explains why everyone was so chill around the killer until they actually tried killing them.
There is also the fact that the actual "final girl" in the first Friday 13th movies were: having an affair with her married boss, using drugs, drinking.
It is wild that this franchise would become synonymous with the pure as snow final girl.
Never thought I'd hear Mel give Mariah Carey competition for high notes.
Fun Fact: Betsy Palmer, the actress of Jason's mother originally turned down the role, but took it because she needed a new car.
Also, I love that Jason has become such a known movie monster that the ending to this movie shocks everybody when the killer is revealed.

Scream was the first horror movie that I ever saw, so I already knew the surprise ending when I saw this for the first time. BUt I still liked it. One year I sat and watched the first of all the horror movie classics. First chucky, first Nightmare on Elm Street, first Halloween, and they were all very good.
You should add the first Hellraiser, Texss Chainsaw Massacre, and Phantasm as well

Phantasm is a different type of series.
Very little is explained, leaving the series wide open to fan (phan) interpretations. Things happen, and that's just the way it is. The upside is that you can't break the rules if you never created any to start with.

Ah, yeah you should probably stay away from Hellraiser, but If you watched Child's Play, you could handle Texas Chainsaw.
Fun fact or maybe not: the snake was real and was someone’s pet when they borrowed it for the film. Obviously the owner of the snake wasn’t pleased when they killed it.

I have a pet snake and if anyone borrowed Ashley and then cut her head off I'd been sitting in jail on assault and battery charges the next day gladly. Would you feel the same if it were a dog or cat I wonder? It's a snake so it means less than any other animal? It's not still a life, someone's companion and friend?

I watched it in the theater when it came out, i was about 12 and watched it through my fingers. but remember the audience screaming when the kid popped up and grabbed her. so yep, it gets pretty much everyone, except for my father who laughed. he thought it was great and laughed when everyone else jumped and screamed'
I won't have anyone criticising Adrienne King's acting. She's an absolute sweetheart and a horror icon.
I thought Adrienne Kings acting was solid for the most part but she is an absolute sweetheart. But the scene in the hospital her acting wasn't great. What do you guys think?

My Dad’s about 70, and he watched this for the first time with me a couple of weeks ago. The only time he said anything positive about the whole movie was when she did that Hepburn impression. He looked at me with this shocked/amused look and said, “That was actually really good.” 😂
@@seeker8097 I guess I got lucky because my 79 year old Mom is why I love horror movies. I got it from her. She said she used to go see them when she was pregnant with me and my grandma said she was going to scar me by doing that. I guess she was right in a way. 🤣🤣
@@seeker8097 That's the thing. In 1979 it would have been normal for a random girl in her early 20s to know who Katherine Hepburn was. Today people see this scene and don't know what she's doing. 😆
From tragedy to vengeance.
Evil was born.
I was more sympathetic to the origins of the Voorhees legacy.
It's a shame that Jason died so young and for the wrong reasons.
I sort of agree with the mother's grief and her son's return to finish what was started.
But as 9 sequels, 1 spinoff and 1 remake came along, it was more for the next characters to experience this legend of Crystal Lake, the kills, the fandom and all the major staple of the entire 1980s to early 1990s.
I love these movies. I’m glad you gave a shout out to Harry Manfredini for his score. It’s absolutely iconic and part of what makes these movies so much fun. The effects are also great, created by gore icon Tom Savini. Parts 2, 4 and 6 are my favourites, so hope you do the sequels too.
This was filmed in Blairstown, NJ and it still looks like that! It's rural AF, but really beautiful. Even getting WiFi up there is a struggle.
My husband like to go to the diner up there and they've marketed on their fame. They sell shirts and some of the actors from the original do promotions in town.

This was a small budget independent film. Paramount bought the distribution rights. What I like about this film is it was Jason’s mother who was the killer. It wasn’t until this film became a huge success that Jason became the killer. And Jason didn’t even get his trade mark hockey mask until the 3rd film.
Nothing beats the classics Mell. This was from a time where Horror films were at their prime. The ending was the only part that scared me.
But I really do think you would enjoy watching Maniac Cop if you wanna see an amazing horror film

The Jason you know of through Pop Culture doesn't happen until 3. You have to go through the less iconic Friday 2 Jason first, then you get hockey mask Jason. As for consular in the game, most of them are references with broad strokes that feel similar to in movie characters outside of Tommy as an in game unlock/backup character, and two later consulars based more obviously on characters from part 3.

Love the mystery aspect if this first outing. The use of rain, birds and owls cooing in the night. The cinematography was actually pretty decent and that subtle reaction of Ned clearly feeling like a third wheel, as he see’s Kevin Bacon and his girl frolicking along the lake:)

26:25 I know, it would've made a lot more sense for her to drive her away. She'll have a witness to say that someone killed all of them and will also be her alibi because she'll say that she only just arrived after the others had been killed. If she had a living witness to testify that someone was out there killing everyone then she'd still have a good chance to get the place closed for good.
Then again I think she was completely crazy so she probably wasn't thinking this through

I think Annie WAS actually recorded in the car. Sounds like they just didn't set the levels right... or used two different audio setups. They might have had to over crank the guy's becsuse he had an open window. Can't be sure, though.
They were using a handheld camera most likely not an actual movie camera. Those of course didn’t record sound the best back in the 80’s. They might have even had her redo the line in post which is why it sounds so strange.
I know you’re not the biggest fan of horror films but maybe you can try and watch the rest of the Friday the 13th franchise. Your reaction here is already up there as one of my favorites.

Really happy you got to see this and that you mentioned the game! Me and my husband were frequent players. The playable counselors were a mix of characters from the movies and totally new people. One character was based on the winner of their crowdfunding campaign.
the MPAA made them censor all these movies big time, so they had to cut down a lot of the death scenes from the original cut
especially part 7.
I went yearly to Camp Hope in Hope, NJ where this was filmed. Our campsite shared the lake with the filming campsite for many Friday the Thirteenth movies. Our camp counselors used to try to scare us all the time☺, but it never really worked and the lake’s name is actually Silver Lake. Great reaction to an all time classic, Thanks! Getting into the series the best ones are 1,2,6,7 the okay ones are 4,5,9. Part 8’s title alone should tell you it was a no. Jason X is somewhere between good and okay. Part 3 is iconic, but not good lol. Jason vs Freddy is also good.

You need to watch the sequels. Part 2 introduces Jason as the killer, Part III is where he gets his iconic hockey mask and The Final Chapter is in my opinion the best in the series. Part VI: Jason Lives is also a lot of fun.
This is the only horror movie I watched entirely. Despite a lot of the effects looking a little cheesy, most of them still spook me
I did visited the actual town where they filmed some parts of the places in the opening scene and then I took a fun tour at the actual campsite and was shown where almost every single scene was shot.

Literally watching these videos make me feel like I’m watching movies with my cousins. How you react to movies is how my whole family does movies and it so accurately makes me feel less alone and more at home (I live 10 hours from my folks) you have my laughing hard af. I hate horror movies but this is how I’d watch them to feel better, crack jokes left and right. You’re great.

The way you can tell that the original killer is not Jason, is in the way the characters that do have interactions with the killer, interact with that person. Their guard is completely down around the killer until its too late. The couple at the beginning probably just thought they were gonna be reprimanded so they keep their guard down, not realizing the danger right until the guy is stabbed. Annie, probably just thought of the killer as a kind stranger willing to give her a ride, not knowing the danger until the killer zooms right past the Camp Crystal Lake turn. Steve is familiar with the killer because they are both citizens of the town thats by Crystal Lake. The interactions are pretty cordial for the most part, because the killer is someone who is completely unassuming. Jason is a big hulking guy who you'd definitely feel in danger around and you'd try to get away from him as fast as possible.
This movie was the origunal reversed "Psycho". Very well explained it for a kid talking to a mom in her head.
