In America, As long as you are taking off from an approved public area OR private land with permission, you can fly over any place that is not restricted by the FAA. The FAA is the sole governing body of airspace.
In Canada, the aviation regulations require the drone pilot-in-command to "immediately cease operations" until they are able to conduct an analysis of causes and corrective measures in the event an incident occurs that results in a report to police (CAR 901.49(1)(g)). If this happened here, the pilot would have to terminate the flight most likely and deal with the officer, even produce aviation documents on demand. However, there would be no aviation law violation from just flying over a police station is the airspace is not restricted or controlled.
You can fly over police stations and most critical infrastructure in the UK though, unless they are in a flight restriction zone. Prisons and land used by the military are two exceptions to this
The police Sgt clearly doesnt know the laws relating to UAVs, as most police dont, but he did actually have a power to obtain the operators name under schedule 9 of the ATM&UA Act 2021 without suspecting an offence. If police believe a flight requires registration they can require any info, including name etc, to satisfy themselves the flight is legal. On a side note the only time ive ever been fined by police is in the same FRZ as you flew in Helsinki! I missed that it was an FRZ and was stopped later by police after filming the cathedral. They were extremely polite (and seemed suprised I had the EASA ID), but still fined me all the same.
Hello. Thanks for sharing your Helsinki Experience. Yes, the Finnish police are very professional. I can easily reach out to them to ask questions and they always reply with a full explanation.
In all honesty, if he's allowed to fly there, is he really a troublemaker? I would debate this. We can look at these matters from a certain point of view.
To be honest, most police don't know the law behind drone. There in most cases are a few drone officers in the area/region that are pilots, and while they know the related laws those officers are a limited resource. Soooo, no as a whole they don't know more!!
As always great info Stephen. I have had three interactions with the police and in all three cases they were fine with me as I spoke to them the same way I would accept them to speak to me with courtesy and respect. 😎
Great video Stephen , excellent information 👍 I’ve seen this video before of DJE Media, , you’ve done a great job breaking it down and and talking us through it , only interaction I’ve had was a positive one when I was approached and asked if I would have a fly round and look for someone for them 🙂👏👌
Lol I was flying over a police station today in Winton Bournemouth. It was in a flight restriction zone as well. Ok I did ring the airport to get permission first and I rang the police station the day before so they knew I was going to be there.👍
Just seen another video on TikTok of the same auditor running for his life as he peed of the wrong people and he’s on the phone begging for their help (the police did turn up) no part 3 so far
But, if he's allowed to fly there, is the bad rap only coming from a lack of information about the regulations? I would debate this. Thanks for the insight though.
As a Police Officer , I can arrest and the air space has nothing to do with it. The Officer should have made it SIMPLE . Either obey my Oder to stop flying or face arrest. The REAL issue is the SAME as in America, you CANNOT FILM IN TUNNELS, on BRIDGES in NYC . The problem is terrorists collect information , doorways, AC ducts, etc etc. . It’s Very suspicious for a person out of the blue to film a Police Department. So they have the RIGHT to protect themselves. At VERY least I would have demanded to inspect the drone for weapons, Gas, then to see the footage. Then I would run wants and warrants on this person as it’s VERY suspicious. I would then TRESPASS him from the property. So why put yourself through all of this. Let these men/women do their live saving jobs and stop taking up their time with such stupidity. Like you said in beginning, go inside and inform them your flying . In America as a Police Officer, I DO NOT enforce FEDERAL LAWS. But an example here is a Bank Robbery. We respond protect the public then turn it over to Secret Service/ FBI.
As an American Police officer, you should not be making comments on UK law or what a UK police officer should or shouldn't do. I obviously do not know the full circumstances of this incident, but I can see no UK offences that have been committed and no reason for the initial officer to demand the drone be landed, demand the operator's details or threaten to confiscate the drone. All I will say is just because you can fly somewhere contentious , doesn't mean you should just to prove a point.
Nothing you said is relevant to the UK, where we have a rule of law and the police are also accountable under it with protections in place for law abiding citizens. Sounds like you live in a fascist state where people live in fear of the police

Can't fly over police stations or critical infrastructure either here in South Africa

I think these restrictions will come into place. The CAA are rather behind in these matters. I wouldn't mess with the RSA police 😁
Wise not to flyover police stations, no matter what the law is. Good conversation, and thanks for sharing Stephen.
Absolutely, Ron. Thanks.
The auditors are doing it for a reaction and while most of them are flying legal it doesn't help the hobby
Yes I would agree, but again, he is within his right to fly there.

We’ve had on occasions the police arrive, Spanish police, they just want to see which drone it is, is it better than theirs!
Haha, cool
Troublemaker wanting to get paid by harassing people. Ridiculous.
In all honesty, if he's allowed to fly there, is he really a troublemaker? I would debate this. We can look at these matters from a certain point of view.
I just got my first drone a dji mini 3 all your vids help so much🎉 keep up the good work
I’m very glad to hear that. Thank you for your support 😊✌🏻

Thank you. Your rights as a drone operator are vital for everyday use.
@@FlybyGuys you’re right mate they are, really enjoyed your video, well put together 🙂
If they order it down, they get educated then billed for the down time.
Indeed they do.

A heads up is alway a good idea. Even if it's not essential, it's polite.
Steven i stay away from airports .harbours. police stations. and prisons .and emergency services iif they ask me that's fine then i will do a job
Just seen another video on TikTok of the same auditor running for his life as he peed of the wrong people and he’s on the phone begging for their help (the police did turn up) no part 3 so far
Lol typical!
Very informative. I do appreciate your videos as flying drones more actively again, I need to do some catching up with the current regulations.
I heard this a thought as everyone knows - ( Someone Audits ) ... I dunno why you give the likes of this air credit. It gives us all a bad rap!
But, if he's allowed to fly there, is the bad rap only coming from a lack of information about the regulations? I would debate this. Thanks for the insight though.
Nice 1 Stephen
Thanks Lyn.
