@Stephen - What a great analysis. I always appreciated working with you in the early days of drone light shows and your focus on safety and I remember several high-profile people you had conflicts with in the name of safety. I too am stunned if the show and the geofence are a single file... agreed that this should never be the case. I attended a light show a few weeks back and was surprised the audience could get all the way up to the hard geofence and that the drones did not have prop guards... definitely not the same safety standard Intel drones used. BTW, nice drones in the back of your office. :)

Hi, IMO each drone should require one pilot. Software control of a number of drones is just asking for trouble.

For anyone with a neo... I ended up here googling the same error code, motors suddenly wouldnt start for no apparent reason I tried everything, cycling batteries, reset as described here, re calibrate, rolled back 3 different firmware versions. The drone was two days old, no crashes. I had been flying it with motion controller without prior problem, put it on charge and then.... this. I had same error whether i tried palm control, mobile with fly app, or connecting goggles and motion controller. I was so close to send it for repair when in last ditch effort connected fpv controller 3 (which id only used a few times the day before) and it instantly started working as normal. I dont kknow if its to do with sequence powering devices on off or what.... But dont give up 😉. Hope this helps someone.

RID was never intended to prevent anything like this. It's too short ranged and too slow to be of any use to prevent collisions. It is purely for government control.

FYI, Remote ID isn't the issue. DJI Mini 3 Pro was the sUAS involved. It does not require RID when used under 44809. Also, the fine isn't $17k.

Hi Steven, I just asked Sean, and why didn't geofience or Remote ID work. I hope this person realized what they did and what could have happened being stupid enough to fly with airplanes over head. They should charge them with the cost of the repair and a big fine. Thanks again for the video

DJI Mini 3 Pro is what drone the FBI has. I verified it via the picture of the remains. It's 249g. No Remote ID required.

This topic is under much discussion on the internet, I hope we get some facts before everyone jumps to conclusions. And in the US, if it was a hobby pilot flying an under 250 gram drone there might not have been any RID required. And so far, as of date I'm writing this it hasn't even been proven to be a drone crash. Great discussions Stephen, thanks for sharing.

I have a few questions, was it a drone? I mean, did they find a drone in the wing of the aircraft? If it was, could it have been someone involved in the emergency? often times I speak with fire department or police department officers that are flying drones that shouldn’t be. And yes, I agree Remote ID is more about compliance and security.

I would like to think this is not true, but however if it is proven that it was indeed a drone strike then its totally unacceptable behaviour from the pilot in question. It is bad enough that these fires happened in the first place with people loosing their homes, contents and even lives. The emergency services work hard to protect people and the last thing they need is obstruction from doing their very tough and very dangerous job.

I only started flying 2 years ago and I fly recreationally in the US. As part of my training I have been watching You Tubers discussing General Aviation in the US and saw dozens of people killed in GA crashes each month, yes each month not year. Non commercial aviation is not safe. And the FAA is unable to fix this. In the US over 100 people a DAY die in automobile crashes. We have been unsuccessful at teaching people to fly or to drive, and we are learning that drone pilots are these same people. Until we install seat belts, air bags, auto pilot and lane departure control in all new drones, I'm afraid the incidents in CA and FL are going to become daily/hourly occurrences.

I don't completely agree with you about RID. Couple of things; it's relatively new and authorities haven't equipped emergency services to be able to easily and effortlessly ID drones the way they might for example with numberplate recognition. Second, airports are rolling out long range RID scanners which allow them to track and identify drones and their operator as well as operator location, meaning they can send airport security out to the operator and if necessary police to get the operator to remove their drone from the airport restriction zone. I'm not necessarily a fan of beaming my id and location, especially not if it becomes trivial for any tom dick and jane to access the data on the fly. However I do think it could be useful for emergency services once they have suitable equipment to log the drone id and more importantly, operator location, so they can direct ground based services to the operators location.

I'm afraid Remote ID needs to extend to all drones - Here in Ireland there was loads of posts of footage over a Taylor Swift concert. Using Mini drones. But its a farce in reality - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ The damage on that plane looks to be something BIGGER ...

Heard a vague report on this situation on TV this morning but I thought it was a drone involved in the firefighting but it was very very vague.

Common sense is a lost art.

RID and LAANC are a complete failure. in Daytona last yr. a helicopter hit a drone. This occurred with eyesight of the tower. Laanc had been authorized so why did ATC not know the drone was there and why did they route the helicopter through that area. It was new construction right next to the airport. ATC guy in the tower could have seen the drone and been its spotter, it was that close to them. What's the point of it all if ATC doesn't have the info or do something with it? It's a punishment system not a protection system for sure. The entire system failed in that incident. No idea why every plane and helicopter aren't required to have ADS-B if drones are required to have RID so we can see them coming. The system is worthless at doing it's job.

I'm always suspicious in these kind of situations. Was it really a drone? (I just saw a news report that says authorities have the drone.) If so was it a news organization drone, or even a drone being used by first responders. I'd like to know more.

TFR for rec flyers means don't fly. As for remote ID I never see any other drones around when I fly.

As I write this, I don’t believe that it’s been established if the drone involved was being operated by a first responder aiding in fire fighting or not. I agree that remote ID is an issue. I would not be at all surprised if there aren’t multiple incidences of drones being flown in these TFR’s due to lack of knowledge or disregard of rules. 😢

People literally ruin everything it's so sad. Remote ID I agree is a joke and doesn't do anything for safe flying. I witness so many all the time flying super unsafe and this example just another example of people not caring and most likely trying to get viral footage or something totally moronic at no costs. Ok he decides to fly....during a disaster with rescue efforts...ok....not good at all but. Then he does that and flies at a manned aircraft level and altitude and doesn't even have the wherewithal to avoid them at all possible cost?! It's beyond unacceptable and person should never be able to fly a drone again and pay for damages.

My dronie has red reflective tapes on its body and arm so there's some red all around plus I have a red strobe on top and a white strobe upside down on the bottom; white one is mostly to increase its visibility for me, red one is both for visibility and birds. Love its so far.

I don’t think your theories are correct. These drones can stagger their take off, meaning they can be placed very close to each other (calibration independent). The geofence distances seem to be about the norm. Bear in mind in order for this company to get their drone swarm license, these operational would have to be signed off by the FAA, so there nothing nefarious going on here either.

If you the system being used you would know that you’re off the mark with your theory. The Reddit post is partially correct by the collisions were not due to any kind of calibration.

2 issues occured First was the takeoff layers colliding. That was likely because of human error but that is not a fatal flaw in itself. If the drones collide like they did they would have just dropped on the ground in the takeoff grid from damage. And most did that. That is not the issue. The second problem is several failed to hold position and went every which way which i believe is likely due to EKF divergence. There's more to it but this is just to keep it simple. The geofence had nothing to do with it because the drones where never even supposed to leave the takeoff grid. The fence wouldn't have mattered because it didn't even work. Fences don't work when EKF divergence is the problem. Because of this incident an alternative additional safety mechanism is being implemented into a different system (not the one used in this show) which would have prevented this very fault from occuring.
