@MetalPhreakAU I have just done the same on the MT1887 in MIN/MAX and it works perfectly. That must be due to the fact of the auto ranging right across the mV and V range....something my Fluke can't do...it also hits OL once readings are out of range.
@rapsod1911 Well the case and body are the same as the EXtech so I think it is exactly the same bar some colouring and graphics. I'm sure you're correct on the use of the DMM chip....I have seen quite a few others now with a similar spec in different shells / cases. I do a full review of the Brymen TBM867 so you can check there but the continuity is good...but not quite the same as the fluke.

@MetalPhreakAU Again, excellent pictures. I just had a long chat with the MD of Major Tech and he says it does need to be used with the plugs and supplied leads / probes to meet the IP67 Spec. If I have my facts correct, MT export these to AU under a different brand name as they have a very good relationship with CEM. The meter was specifically designed for the mining industry in South Africa as they required a robust / waterproof meter.
heh, found your video looking for dismantle info as I blew the 10A fuse on mine and I was stuffed if I could split the case, was not even sure it came apart in the middle of the silicon, managed it thanks to this vid and currently have it wrapped in 10A alfoil :) .. temporary till I get a fuse. I bought mine at a secondhand shop for $50, it has had a hard life in industry I think (serial in the 10xx range, so not a new one compared to your 11xx) , I had to plastic polish the display just so I could read the icons and cleaned the oil off the case with isopropyl, it was black with oil, maybe a mechanics ? I noticed you comment on the battery, mine still has the same goldenpower battery in place. Battery icon is still there even with the backlight on, so I am pretty confident these are a pretty darn good battery. I use mine for very low voltages when my trusty fluke 77 or 12 run out of resolution, I agree with the stupidly slow update.
@mjlorton I also noticed that the Extech models don't seem to come with the plugs (and are still IP67). The manual for my ABW version makes no mention of them being necessary for the IP67 rating. When I opened up mine to check it out, it seemed like the input terminals are pretty well sealed as the whole thing is moulded plastic around the metal. Thanks for the review. Confirmed most of what I thought about these CEM meters. Does the min/max function autorange correctly on your meter? If I let mine settle to 0V on the mV (auto)range, then enter min/max mode, and connect a 9V battery I'm met with a max reading of OL. I have to manually choose the correct range before doing min/max readings unless the meter is already in the right range before entering the max/min mode. If you are just measuring a fluctuating voltage its not a problem.

Ok...I have just done a vacuum test (sucked my multimeter!!!) on each input terminal and they seem to be sealed...I'm going to call Major Tech here in South Africa and see if they can shed more light. These are all made by CEM in Asia :) I have identical looking meters that are 6000 count, and are the equivalent of the Extech EX520. They are sold in Australia as Sidchrome / ABW Tools (70940). Mine even has EX520CF written on the PCB :P
Maybe it is not rebranded. Maybe they used same DMM chip as EXTECH. I saw lot of DMM with quasi same spec. but 100% different maker. How fast is continuity test on that Brymen?
Found more or less the equivalent meter from the OEM (CEM DT-9919) on eBay for under £60 ($100) with a slightly different selector switch - "off" at the far left. I have had this meter rebranded by a different company for about 5 years and it would certainly make a good first meter for the price. I agree with everything Martin said about it, its slowness is annoying, but for a first meter under $100, you can't complain. @mjlorton I briefly tested mine a while ago under water. I did have the rubber plugs installed, but I was using standard banana to crocodile clip tests leads which do not seal at all. There was no evidence of water getting in so I would say its fairly safe from accidental immersion. The issue however is the water getting in contact with whatever device/voltage source you are measuring *outside* the meter. In my case a 3V alkaline battery pack is harmless :) More Pics: imgur(dot)com/a/48Kp4
Too much money for a Chinese meter with those quirks. I picked up an Extech ex505 kit, which lacks the useless slow bar graph, a little less spec overall, and half the cost. I can't see paying more than $100 for a Chinese meter.
