    I am really glad you did this review. I use this at work. When buying a DMM, I purposefully looked at other DMMs than the default Fluke. The USB data logging capability is surprisingly very useful. I wish Hioki did a better job of marketing this.

    This is one of the best reviews I ever saw on a multimeter.
    I think it's about time multimeters should come with the datalogging INCLUDED!

    Very nice review. The EE types won't have any complaints. The MSP430 is the TI's classic multimeter IC used in the Fluke 87 and others. I would guess the Hioki chip is a true RMS converter. I'm guessing the HOLD button is a simple "display freeze" and not an "auto-hold". For 140.00 it should have micro-amps, but then there's no up-sell potential.

    • @ZopcsakFeri
      @ZopcsakFeri ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you press it shortly, it freezes. If you keep is held for 2 seconds, it goes into auto hold mode, and as the measured value stabilizes, it gives you a beep. Then you can proceed to your next measurement and wait for the next beep to check the next value.

    I purchased one for testing purposes and it is amazing meter. I was so happy with this meter that I am saving money to buy their high-end class meter.
    It is far better than other Japanese meters such as Sanwa and KEW.
    HIOKI is as good as Fluke, I think even better quality.

      No man !!!
      HIOKI IS FOR SURE MORE BETTER THEN FLUKE METERS
      i can confirm it by myself ,because for example fluke 87v has a lot of problems ,so it's not good for an expensive meter like that to have this kind of problems ,it's a sin !!!
      So keep your eyes on hioki multimeters and you will never be wrong with them :)

    I remeber Hioki Meters from 30 years ago. During the course for my professional life I came across many DMM. Last year, however, I have bought myself a Hioki again for around the house and hooby. I love my newD T4261. I got it with the bluetooth dongle for some logging.

    Actually, if you want to measure mA up to 10 A, Hioki has DT4256, that has dedicated 60mA range (with 10μΑ resolution), in the 10A input jack! So you do not need nesessary go up to their hi end models, to perform 4-20mA loop tests.

      Of course, please feel free to share the video as you see fit. When I was shopping for a new multimeter I was surprised that I couldn't find many reviews of the DT4252 -- and after I bought one I figured it deserved an honest review.

      Hello.
      Your DMMs seem very nice. Even the probes seem to be similar than the ones from Probe Master!
      A DMM with really good probes, most of the time one need to buy them aftermarket because they aren't so good!
      Finally a Japanese product that deserves the high quality of your electronic products. Made in Japan!
      Do you plan to add support to Sigrok? It's a great Open Source project for data logging of devices such as DMMs, oscilloscopes and other measurement equipment. They are volunteers and are very open to accept patches to provide support to your products. You can contact them over their mailing list or in their #sigrok IRC channel at irc.freenode.net
      Are your DMMs distributed in Spain or at least in Europe? Do you have offices in Europe too?
      Domo arigato.
      Saludos desde España!

    I just got this DMM, it works very well. My only complain is when the DMM goes to sleep, the manual says press any key to wake it up, that part is not working. If you are using the current meter , the test lead must be pulled out, turn the DMM OFF, re-insert the test lead, turn the DMM ON, etc. A truly pain you know here. I contacted HIOKI, they say there is not firmware update. My DMM came with 1.11 firmware.

  • @ZopcsakFeri

    The plugs are indeed a nice touch, but I wish they also had duct caps for the third banana socket that's almost never in use. I got my Hioki 4256 about 2 years ago, and love it since, but I haven't found a plug to order for it so far.

    Does anyone know if you can measure the amount of juice on any kind of battery, like a regular alkaline battery with something like this?

    • @ozzie_goat
      @ozzie_goat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can measure its voltage. You may know an AA puts out 1.5 V. If it's less than that, or if it's flat, the voltage will be lower.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To anyone reading this years after the question was asked: you can use any multimeter’s DC volts range to measure a battery. HOWEVER, and this is important, just measuring the voltage by touching the probes to the battery will be very, very inaccurate. What you need to do (and this is what battery test modes and dedicated battery testers do) is to apply a load (typically a resistor) to the battery. A good battery’s voltage won’t collapse when you apply the load. A bad battery _showing the same no-load voltage_ will have its voltage plummet when the load is applied.
      The value of resistor depends on the type of battery; you’ll use a higher value resistor (=smaller current flow) on a AAA than a AA, for example.
      FYI, the actual measured voltage of 1.5V alkaline cell is about 1.6V when brand new, and at about 0.9V there is no energy left.

      I do have a close model (4256), and in real life it's absolutely usable; unfortunately this video somehow shows the screen much darker than what you would see in person. Indeed, it doesn't have the contast of competitor brands, but it's bright enough, as far as I have experienced. :)
      Now that I got to the end of the video, from 23 minutes the display is getting realistic!

      @@ZopcsakFeri thanks for the info! One other thing: when he tests the 9v battery, the dmm beeps once, but when he tests 2x small batteries of 3v, it does not beep anymore, why so? I find it strange and funny..

    I dont know if its luck but you did good there , you really made a good choice , im sure you gonna spoil it when you review more meters since most of them are not that good let me just fill in with XP, Leads are very good , they are not good they are very good , ok, display is less then what you want but if you get better its gonna take its tall on battery its you decision , doesn't have mA range , but shows mA , lots of ppl wont care so its not a problem , those that will need a bench top like me , not that you cant measure mA its just that this thing doesn't behave like its a bench top lab meter, so it for example beeps like hell , can be heard in next room , or bother house hold occupants , i dont know if it has volume option its probably does not , most dont , but what can you do , this is as good as Fluke obviously , no mistake there , but it costs more , you have Brymen , you have Sanwa and UniT , they all work and are good , now this one joined the Pack

      Well, my degree is in journalism, so I know how to write scripts. Still getting my sea legs for on-camera delivery, though ;-)
      Hioki isn't well-known in North America (which is a shame), but they're huge in Japan and other parts of Asia. If they expanded their DMM lineup while keeping the same high quality and managed to undercut Fluke and Keysight on prices, they'd really take off. Hioki makes its money off of its industrial and assembly equipment product lines though.

    That's a big fuse.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a standard 11 amp specialty multimeter fuse (10.3x38mm size). Every top-brand multimeter uses one of these on its 10A range. When present, the mA range is typically protected with a 440mA multimeter fuse (10.3x35mm size). These multimeter fuses are designed to break _enormous_ fault currents without exploding. Consequently, they’re also quite expensive, usually around $10 each (end-user price).
      If you open a multimeter and it contains fuses smaller than these, don’t use it on anything farther upstream than your AC outlets. (I.E. don’t use it on the input side of the breaker panel.) And if the fuses are glass, not ceramic, I wouldn’t use the meter on mains voltage at all. Totally fine for benchtop low voltage DC, but not mains.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@infinitecanadian :P
      Just know that your main breaker box is not safe to probe with a multimeter that doesn’t have these big fuses. The output side of the breaker panel is CAT III and the supply side is CAT IV. For your North American 120/240V service, that means you need a 300V CAT III or CAT IV rated meter, respectively.

      @tookitogo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@infinitecanadian There are meters for every kind of voltage. It’s about matching the tool to the job, within the limits of your skill and training.
      (And of course the various definitions of “high voltage”. To an electronics technician like me or your dad, 120V or 230V mains AC is “high voltage”, while to an electrician, high voltage means above 1000V AC, 50-1000V AC is “low voltage”, and under 50V AC is “extra low voltage”.)

    Trying to bump this thing into the same league as Flukes or Agilent/Keysight is silly. Sales figures probably sort this out. I'm not saying this is a bad meter, it's decent. But that's about all it is, it's no top brand name that's for sure!
