Holy crap, everyone's worrying about the meter, but I just kept expecting someone to jump into a rock hidden under water. That's super dangerous, don't do it!
I wish I had been there to join you! Rocky Creek & the canyons look other-worldly. Thanks for taking our EX505 along for the trip. You dished out a lot of abuse! Glad to see our drive-over video offered inspiration, even to “point break.” I know the video editing & production for a shoot like this takes a lot of planning, time & effort. Thanks for the hard work! I’m asking your viewers to join me in proposing a new IP rating: IPDJ: Dave Jones Tested Thanks again, Dave! André at Extech Inst.
@aardvarkjazz Thanks André. Really enjoyed the trip, and yes the canyons are really "other-wordly" which is impossible to really catch on camera. The meter survived just great, and got even more abuse than was caught on camera. Some of the smacks against the rocks were quite hard!
@onlywhenprovoked It's an Edelrid Ultralight, a classic climbing and canyoning helmet. Designed mostly for falling rocks, but still offers decent side impact protection.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at around 16:00 the PTC leg seems to be out of its hole and appears to have never have been soldered in there in the first place (no sign of solder on the pad).
I once worked for testsafe Australia and one of my jobs was Ingress protection certification so I can post an expert opinion :). While your tests wouldn't qualify for NATA approval, I would say that your treatment of that meter far exeeds any abuse required in AS60529. It would have been interesting to see if the meter still met the reqirements for IP6X after you ran over it with your car. Dave, you need to build your own dust chamber :)
Although it was amazing to see the review, I was sad because I couldn't get anything other that an EX430 ad that too as a present. And Dave, never even think of doing this with a CRO ;) I might be crying over here!
Are you planning to get the Gossem in the next trip .... will it survive ?. It's unbelievable the abuse that this Extech can handle. For 100 dollars, I would buy it for sure. Thanks for the review.
Forgive my probable ignorance but... those construction style hard hats don't offer much for protection to the back, sides, or front of your head. Is it only to guard against falling rocks ,, rather than if you fall?
IP67 is for water immersion and dust, not sand and foreign objects. Us compressed air to blow out the contacts and I'm fairly certain the meter will work adequately . I wouldn't call it a fail at all, but simply an unavoidable consequence of having open jacks that are exposed to sand.
Isn't it great when those red carry bags fill up with water... not! I used to do that stuff (without the multi meter) as a job, it was great fun :D 14c? Toasty warm... I don't think running water gets that warm in the UK :)
Dave When a multimeter says ip 67 , should it be waterproof without the test leads and or plugs? I have a pce itm 20 multimeter/insulation tester made by cem instruments.
O_O I thought Avi was exaggerating when he said "Dave takes his meter everywhere! He even takes it in the water!" er... O_____O also... I can't take your accent seriously. Its funny how you say multimeter.
With the sound randomly getting muffled, does not make this a good video to watch after any episode of Marble Hornets. End up just waiting for the monsters to jump up on screen.
This video is by far the best MM review ever.... just awesome!!!
thanks Dave

lots of floating measurements going on. one of the best episodes out there.

@Tarkusine Fraid not. Cleaned out and the problem persists. Banana jacks have 4 self wiping contacts anyway.

@38911bytefree Gossen's waterproof offering is sadly not IP67 rated.

The whole manual didn't mention how to calibrate the sensor probe on EX505. Mine is off by 1deg Celcius.
I am looking at the 520 or 530 myself. Seeing that the 505 does so well gives me some faith towards purchase.
Awesome video Dave, but for me the star of the show was Rocky Creek - what a beautiful place, very jealous.

@errold32 Waterproof Kodak PlaySport. Water gets in the mic and muffles the sound sometimes.

@pikuorguk My canyon pack has drainage mesh in the sides, otherwise you'd be trying to stand up with 20kg of extra weight in your pack!
Forgive my probable ignorance but... those construction style hard hats don't offer much for protection to the back, sides, or front of your head. Is it only to guard against falling rocks ,, rather than if you fall?
Yes, to protect the suit on the rock slides.

@astrowanabe Yes, we drive on the correct side of the road :-P
@Wragie Yeah, it's pretty impressive. There was more abuse than captured on camera too.
@barearsed I could just take it to the outback for that, lotsa fine red dust!
It measured an overload if abuse. It's spot on.
@EEVblog This will not stop you LOL ... Ok, just the drop and the run-over test for the Gossem.
Sound is kind of muffled sometimes, are you using two cameras, or a water proof case?
maybe it's a stupid question, but why do you war shorts over your suite? to protect it or what?
Nice canyons.
Sounds like the camera mic didn't survive as well as the meter...
It floats!
"So Dave, what did you get up to today?"
Was the water temperature increasing as you went for a pee? ;-)
AWESOME!
looks like fun
Is your car a Holden Vectra or a Vauxhall Vectra?
@freemind321 Not so. Go watch Extech's video of them running it over with a truck were it survives just fine.
ROFL well done..!!

The sound of the range switch made me cringe.
O_O I thought Avi was exaggerating when he said "Dave takes his meter everywhere! He even takes it in the water!" er... O_____O also... I can't take your accent seriously. Its funny how you say multimeter.
Hideous thing. What's up with that sickly green?
Surviving being driven over by a car is pretty impressive though.

That's murder
Why don't you just find a mate with a canon and fire that multimeter, Testing survival from High G Force acceleration ?
This guy has a serious meter fetish...
First viewer and first comment, woot!
