I haven’t watched it all, just less then half way done, and I already know this is what I was looking for… now you are modeling to us, new tutors, how to go about teaching… great!!
How has it gone? I’m going to be considering applying to Preply and I’ve heard mostly good things about it. But i’d love to hear how it has gone in your experience
I use italki as a student and I like to be interrupted. Actually I requested my tutor to interrupt me every time I make a mistake. It works good for me bc I want to know in real time what my mistakes are in order to correct them ASAP.
I wish every teacher on italki saw this video. Because sometimes even after a trial lesson I still have no idea of what that teacher style is and what we are going to do on the “real” classes. Often they just want to learn more about me and my level of English and forget that we, their students, want to learn more about them, the teachers. I have tried several teachers on italki until something clicked and I thought “oh, I think we’ll get along well with this one”. The worst experience was when a teacher ended the trial session 10 minutes earlier because he was eager to watch a football game (England was playing the semifinal that night). Ufffff. I never came back.
Thanks for the feedback! 😁 Each teacher has their own style, but I think developing a great trial lesson could help the teacher and the student. Sometimes, it is just chemistry, as you said. WOW - 10 minutes early for a football match. Brutal! I wouldn't even have confirmed that. I'm sorry you had that experience, but I'm glad you've had some luck. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for this video! This is an excellent tutorial. I've been teaching on Italki for about two months and the trial lessons still really stress me out! I will definitely use some of your tips from now on. Take care!
Hello I started my journey as a tutor. But because I’m too nervous I think I don’t have the good approach. I find your video very cool, and I will try this method 😅
Cheers for the feedback. My pleasure. :) OH, I know. Somedays, as with any job, I can have an off-day. On the other hand, I try not to get stuck in a static trial lesson routine, teaching and reteaching the same lesson. It could be tricky to nail it. Anyways, congrats on the milestone. Best of luck!
Amazing video! I have two questions: 1. Is it possible to do activities with total beginners? A lot of my trial lessons are with people just starting out with the languages I teach and I feel like we can just discuss about how I teach and ask them questions to get to know them and see how I can help them. 2. What about asking them questions and let them do the same before the activities? As a student I wouldn't get overwhelmed but I feel like people who have a low level might feel in that way. Thank you for everything, your videos are so useful!
Hi Ryan. thank you very much for the video and for not only explaining but giving examples as well. Is it allowed on italki to share one of your sessions in class on youtube (record the lesson and share it on youtube) to see how you conduct the lessons, without showing the students face or anything like that ofcause... I guess it would also depend if the student would mind too
Hey L, Again, I apologize for the late reply, somehow I only just saw this comment but it’s a fantastic question. Absolutely I can record my lessons and I have done this before. I’ll try to record and upload some lessons in the near future. Thanks for watching!
Hello Tyana, Great question. Yes, exactly! I try to extend my activities to make the lesson last longer which is sometimes tough. I also gives more time to chat at the end so I'm sure to come prepared with a lot of questions for the student unless if they have questions. 😁
Hi Ryan! Great channel and videos!! I have a quick question! Have you ever found that having a structured trial lesson can be detrimental in some cases (for examples with students who wish to only engage in conversation and don't want a specific topic or a structured class) ? I would assume it does not really happen as structure shows that you are prepared and devoted to the student, but I was curious! Thank you :D I love all your ideas!
Hey Joséphine! Excellent question. Yes, it can absolutely be detrimental. Organization is not always what student are looking for. Back in the day, when students probably booked more so for my personality and conversational lessons, I could have chased some students away. It's possible. I guess we'll never know! Now that I focus on IELTS and General English, having structure is a real plus. Besides, over the almost 3000 lessons I've taught, only one student expressed that I had "too many activities in the trial lesson" (which I appreciate). Then, there were a handful of other classes where the students either didn't seem to be into the activities or were overwhelmed by this. I guess these are things that we can teachers need to anticipate, react and adjust to for the benefit of our students. 🤓
Oh and also wanted to ask about the intro video. the guidelines mention it should be taken horizontally, But now when you upload it should you turn it around upright on the pc or on your phone before uploading it on italki or should you just upload it as is? Cause when I play it on the phone or laptop its horizontal due to shooting ot horizontally. Thanks in advance
Another nice question. In fact for me I just kept my laptop in its regular spot and iTalki was fine with that. PS: they’re much less picky with the video than advertised, in my experience. I’ve seen many videos of other teachers which break many of their guidelines but I suppose they’re not deal breakers for being accepted to teach.
Hi Ryan, I am just new in the platform and I have some question with missed trial lessons. I had my 2nd missed lesson a month ago. Now, i received another report even though I attended but I admit I arrived late. Will it turn to be a consequence? Will it be my 3rd missed lesson? Or the cycle refreshes every month? Hope you can answer me.
Hello sir. thanks for the video. i just wanted to ask: isn't moving to another platform against their policy ? i mean is it allowed to share our Skype ID in the messages section ? and is the trial is it for free or not ? and as a newbie teacher on itlaki, how much should i charge for that trial ?
Hello! From what I know, you're allowed to work on multiple platforms (Preply, Verbling) so long as you do not try to promote other platforms on iTalki or to your iTalki students so as to take tham off iTalki. This may be a question to ask iTalki, just to be sure. Check out section 6: www.italki.com/instructorterms and bannable offenses: support.italki.com/hc/en-us/articles/215325898-italki-Teacher-Code-of-Conduct You could use whichever communication platform that you wish so long as the lessons are paid through iTalki. The trial is not free and I suggest keeping the price for a trial low until you get many students. Good luck!
As a student, may I choose the subject of the trial lesson? I would like to use my trial class to pratice for a interview, is it possible or the trial is suppose to work just as an opportunity for the teacher to present his method?
Hello Fabio, Thank you for the comment. Absoutely, you can choose. However, be sure to communicate this to the teacher in advance. Enjoy your experience on iTalki!
Hello Teacher Ryan, I have been watching your videos & i Subscribed. I got pre-approved mainly bcozzz of you videos. Thank you so much. You are such a great help (🆘) 😇 MY CONCERN: I got pre-approved, done with the ID Verification, BUT during the "teacher onboarding" process where future italki teachers need to watch eight_teacher_success_videos,, i have watched all "8" videos but i cannot click the "NEXT" button. Then, how on 🌍 can I schedule a group video call then? 😅😅 Which is the last step of the onboarding process. 😭😭😭

Thanks Joe!

This was SUCH a great video! Thank you! If you got a better camera and mic, you could kill it on TH-cam. You have a great way of speaking
Good advice Ryan! I'm still having issues with the trial lesson, even after +1500 lessons with students.
Thanks!

Teacher Ryan how do I share an image or a link with my students?
I've a question. How do I register on iTalki as a teacher?
Great talk Ryan. I’ve just started and find your tips extremely helpful. Do you have a suggestion for tips to use iTalki classroom?
Cheers Jagdish! Happy to help. Good question - I’ll make a video on that in the near future. 😃

Hi Ryan 👋
Thanks for the videos. Is there any policy against using short TH-cam clips?
Hey Cassie!
More than happy to help. 😃
Not that I’m aware of. I use them all the time. Best of luck!
Hi Ryan what would you do if your trail lesson was an hour long? Would you simply extend your activities or would you add activities?
Hello Tyana,
