STRUCTURE
Warm Up: I ask questions based on what they said they were going to do in the previous lesson.
Review: Go over what you did the week prior (making the questions a little different)
Engage: Lead up to the main topic through videos, pictures, and discussion.
Topic: Go through the main part of the lesson. This could be instructional, but in most cases, it's conversation-based.
Role-play: introduce role-play activities to mix things up a bit
Summary: questions about their weekend, a summary of the lesson, and homework.

Thank you for great tips. I teach one to one and one of the things I do is to ask the student to read a simple story aloud paragraph by paragraph and tell it back to me in their own words. The students struggle at first but slowly start correcting themselves. They like the stories and are happy to do this task often.

Thanks for the tips. Just one little tip from me - I have Windows Notepad pinned to my taskbar so that I can type sentences in there, then minimise it until I need it. I often have a few sat in there ready, just in case, then I can just copy and paste them into the IM. For others here, already teaching online or about to start - please try using Zoom. I started online teaching using Skype but Zoom really is excellent. Firstly, the audio and video quality are noticeably better and are much more consistent. You can also do a lot more with it. It has a whiteboard. You can share your desktop or just the application you want, such as a specific document. You can also give them control so they can edit the document you have open on your computer. You can even share the sound from your PC's sound card. 1-1 is free and unlimited.
Antony Stringfellow you have Windows. Many use Mac. Additionally, you are assuming your students have and can access Zoom. Good luck with that. Works fine in some countries, but not in all homes with The Great Firewall. Skype is accessible in even fewer homes than Zoom. Neither of those are used in some cases. Zoom is not always unlimited. There is a time limit for free users. There is now a password required too by all your students, making Zoom more complicated.

I’ve been teaching ESL in schools for nearly 18 months in two different countries and have just signed up for an online teaching job 1-2-1 and found myself feeling like I didn’t have an actual clue where to begin!? @@pleaseforgivemyinsanity2801 Google "Comprehensible Input". Babies learn their native language without input in another language. I have taught in classrooms with students from multiple native languages. I couldn't speak Spanish, Russian, Korean, Vietnamese. English was the only common denominator. If you do speak the learner's language, they begin to look at you as a translator and it can really slow down the process. BTW, I'm nor suggesting that comprenensinle input is the only way. It takes a mix of approaches.

@@pleaseforgivemyinsanity2801 For beginners, the teacher definitely needs to learn the student's native language. Otherwise it's super difficult to teach and learn. I'm saying from experience as both the teacher and the learner.

This is great! Thank you! I know this video is 2 years old, but it is helpful and validating at the same time. I taught for VIPKID for 4 year and am a licensed elementary educator. After new chinese regulations shut down VIPKID, I have continued teaching online with adults. It is a joy! I love it. However, though I am a licensed teacher for the state of NC and have taught ESL 4 years, as well as voluntarily taught ESL adults in my own time, I wasn't sure my lessons were "good". You are right that every teacher has a different niche. I love that you mention this. Thank you! However, I have been very unsure of myself. It is comforting to know my lessons sound like your style. My lesson, overall have a 1) welcome/catch up [I teach conversational english and have been known to just talk all class with my students if the conversations are continuing... teaching is more like a teachable moment in these types of classes]; 2) warm up with questions about learned material last lesson; 3) teach a specific skill/grammar rule/phonics rule; 4) practice this learned material as a "I do, we do, you do" and then; 5) work with the learned material with dialogue &/or role play. Thank you for mentioning correcting students at the end. I correct in the middle after the say something. I do type things in the chat box like you said, but I like your ideas of this. I have been enjoying your videos. Thank you!

Excellent method, it is always necessary to send the student a recording message so that way the student may remember the class before and by doing so it helps the student to be able to practice more conversation with other people as well.

Great advice. I always have a structure as a back up. Sometimes after three words are exchanged we are off to the races and I let it flow. If we get stuck I can lean on the next thing. I focus on conversation strategies and cultural stuff more than grammar, but I use your method of feedback. I find some students are used to and expect structure and lecturing and are put off by my casual approach, which is fine. If I gave homework, I'd have to charge a lot more! No one ever does it anyway.

omg no way, all of the sudden I feel good about myself. I just realize I do most of the things you do, I just started to give classes, I am still very young and I certainly don't have the experience, but I do have the knowledge.
I still took some tips out of this, I was slightly doubting myself because I started giving classes to a new student who is almost new to English so I wanted to watch some content to get some new tips perhaps.

I teach kids via English literature. If the students get into the novels, it's quite easy to motivate them.

Really good basic outline for online teachers! The tip of holding fire on the Skype chat corrections to not stop the flow is a goodie thanks.
Can't really think of much to add except maybe keeping a track of time, something I still struggle with a bit. I like to keep things flexible and let the conversation flow, but sometimes this can lead to the lessons overrunning a bit...
Sometimes, lessons go in a completely different direction. It's good to go with the flow.

Is there an existing group that I can join? I'm an English teacher of 6 years classroom experience. This is my first attempt to try online.
This all sounds amazing! My problem is technology. I am not tech savvy, I teach ESL online for a company but they have set up the slides etc. How do you set up all the slides and technology? Can you make an interactive slide show where they drag and drop? See...I’m clueless. But I’d love to do this on the side in addition to what I do now. Any help?

Hi, what if you don't know their language ? 😃. You can just start by saying "this is a cat,apple, car" by showing them the pictures of these. And ask them repeat. Try to use your hands and facial expressions

Great advice, I particularly like the idea of sending students audio clips. Do you record every lesson then just send them a snippet of their specific error? If so, how do you isolate a 30 sec clip from the whole video?
Going back to what you said about writing their errors down as they speak. I do this and talk about it when they finish (like you said plus interrupting them with every correction can be demoralising and frustrating) my issue is that I'm very conscientious how I do it because when I write the errors down on a writing pad, they see me, stop talking, then ask what the problem was. This invariably stops them in their tracks and usually they say something like ... "Oh dear what have I said wrong now?". Is there anyway I can do this without being so obvious?

How do you prepare lesson plans? Do you prepare a one-year curriculum?
I like this, very helpful. I do much of this already but there are some good suggestions that I can use. I like to do more on the technical side of things when teaching on Skype and shall set up a new account to practice communication on my laptop and desktop. Your suggestion to contact other teachers is also interesting and share ideas and experiences sounds good.
I have a few students who are at the moment out of their comfort zone. My reaction is to pull back and revise what has been learned so far. Focus again on sentence structure and the use of verbs. Many English people have never learned sentence structure and grammar. Any comment are welcome?
This is SO true. I realized that I learned about “Present Perfect” and Past etc in French class but never in English. I speak quite well without it, as I guess proper tenses are implied, but I would actually like to know why we say the things we say in the way that we do.

Thank you sir, I am beginning to set up my own online teaching sessions. Do you have a specific path you take when finding new learners?
Follow this:
1. Set up a system that converts learners on your platform (this usually means email marketing)
2. Get in touch with anyone you know who might be interested in taking lessons with you and send them (at the right time) to your platform.
3. Create lessons on your website, TH-cam, social media etc. (choose one in the beginning) and send people through your system.

Have you ever taught Chinese students online? There are restrictions to what kind of websites/media you can use because many are restricted in China. How does one get around that?
