    Technique #2015: lay a paper towel over the contact cement then soak it with mineral spirits when the cement is dry and old. Let it sit for quite some time. If it's really bad, lay plastic wrap over it and it can soak for hours without drying up.

    I was the one who exclusively did tops in our shop for a few years in the late 70’s. One year I did 1000. Most were padded Cadillacs Buicks and Oldsmobiles. I have the arthritis in my hands to prove it. (And I did buy a few windshields.)

    If that were my car, Id have the vinyl removed, and would not re-install vinyl. The paint looks great, without the vinyl. We use custom made stuffer tools, made from teflon. They are soft, smooth, and no chance of scratch's. Nice job !

    I'm willing to bet the owner just purchased the car recently and the seller did the cheapest/quickest install to maximize his profit of the sale and the current owner is now paying a "second time" to have you install it properly. When I bought my Alfa I waited until I found one that wasn't "restored" so I knew no corners were cut in the restoration. Nice install and beautiful results.

    One other comment. You mastery of that glue gun is impressive. I was expecting glue all over the place! Also, is the roof vinyl anything special? How about your thread. Just curious. Thanks again!

      Hello Shadows, Thank you so much! Keeping the glue contained was difficult at that time because it was a little windy. The vinyl is landau top material and just standard thread. Please keep liking and watching!

    What a great video. You are a master of your craft.
    Regarding the lack of glue; people who do half a$$ed work, should go out of business - karma will catch up with them.

      Hello Trick, Thank you so much for saying so. Yes, the aluminum trim goes over the top material to lock in into the drip rail. Please keep liking and watching!

    Thanks for sharing an informative video. My question is about the vinyl. Is the vinyl used for vinyl tops a thicker material? Have extra sun fading protection?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Jt, You are so welcome! Actually, Landau top vinyl is thinner than upholstery vinyl. I am sure it will have UV protection because of it's design and use. Please keep liking and watching.

    Nice job. What is the air pressure setting you have your spray glue / contact adhesive gun set at?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Guzzy, Thank you so much! I don't pay too much attention to air pressure. Not rocket science. I would guess anything higher than 35lbs. depending on the application. Please keep liking and watching!

    Thanks for all the info, I just got a new project car 87 Buick LeSabre it has small cuts on the vinyl top not too bad, but worth testing myself. How would I go about ordering the vinyl? Thanks in advance, your work looks great, you are a true inspiration 👍. I'll make sure to let you know how it goes.If it turns out👍or👎✌️.

      Hello Sisco, You are so welcome! Any upholstery supplier should carry the landau top material as it is called. Remember learning is doing! I think you will do just fine with your top. Please keep liking and watching!

      Hello Julian, Thank you so much for saying so. I would not use any vinyl. Only use Landau vinyl for this purpose as it is exposed to the elements. Please keep liking and watching!

    Hey Rudy, I like that red paint job on the roof. Quality sprayed. Maybe the owner should have just left it as a 100% red painted car? Good for you though. Easy removal.

    Well done. You make it look easy. How much glue do you typically need for this size of install? Can the glue be sprayed using a typical LVLP paint gun?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hell The, Thank you so much! I usually get it done with less than a quart of contact adhesive. I have never used the LVLP gun because you just can't set it down any where you are like you can a spray gun. Please keep liking and watching!

    Epic for sure! Did you simply tuck the edge behind the windshield trim, never removed it?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello 78, I told you epic! I think I did not remove the windshield trim as the old top came off so easily. I did glue way down behind the trim before tucking the vinyl behind it. Please keep liking and watching!

    CAUTION!!! If you have never done this, don't think it is this easy! This is a MASTER at work. In High School, I use to work at a Trim Shop part time, and I watched another master many times make things look this easy, it is not!!

      Hello Big, Thank you for your kind words. I'd have to say that I did hundreds of vinyl tops in my 44 years. Mostly in the 1970's to 1990's. I hope my video can help people understand how it is done. Please keep liking and watching!

    Clauss scissors that have been sharpened 100 times and a Pfaff sewing machine were old and cool. Before he died he got a Hitachi that he thought was really nice. I'm thinking more about upholstery since my second heart attack and a woman told me her husband wished for an auto upholstery shop around here. We only have a boat and boat cover place.

    Wow!
    I have a 1969 Nova SS and wish you could add a vinyl top to it. Would make it look so cool.
    Whoever installed that other top should have his tools taken away and slapped!!
    Fantastic job.
    Merry Christmas

      Hello Jt in Orlando, I just spent some time there! Thank you so much for saying so! At least now you know that a vinyl top for your '69 Nova is possible. You would just need to make a trim for the rear quarters if it never had a top before as was done before I got ahold of this car. Thank you so much for your kind Christmas wish. And Merry Christmas to you too! Please keep liking and watching!
