    I did this job without taking the door off. Stupid me. Made it much more difficult to do but not impossible. The bottom being most cumbersome to access. Also, I took off the metal completely, seated it in the gasket and then put back together. Your way looks much easier. If I find my freezer isn't getting back to zero, you can bet I'll be taking the freezer door off:). Thanks for a great video.

    First thing is how to get the freezer drawer out of the unit !! Remove ice tray and foods of course then remove the top basket, then bottom basket---then support the drawer front on the floor and remove 3 each 1/8" allen-head screws each side at end of drawer slides=back of drawer. (Turn off ice-maker and drawer-open alert before doing above).
    Drawer then weighs only 15 lb or so, easy to handle. I followed the video and would recommend the following, so you don't pull out all your hair: soaking not necessary. The hex-head screws will not come out, but be sure to loosen each screw to its max as you will see the gap increase from the screw to the retainer plate. After old gasket removed, clean all surfaces between retainers and drawer chassis, THEN use a normal putty knife to lift the retainer plates up onto the screw threads so you get the max distance you can to insert the lip of the new gasket….!
    Go all the way around the drawer. This would avoid prodding and poking the gasket to try and get it placed (potentially rupturing the gasket). As soon as you get several inches of gasket properly placed, lightly tighten screws and move on, just like video. I found my putty knife worked a treat getting gasket lip under plate--better than a screwdriver. End.

      does this mean that the fridge will still be running but the freezer won't be running because it thinks its open? Will this mess up the fridge while I change the gasket? How long do I have?

    Great video on how to do this...it helped a lot! But I wish I'd read the comments beforehand on what to buy or not buy. I ordered what I thought was an OEM part (but it did say replacement & was made in Canada). It did not seal properly or create a vacuum like my old (original) one after installation. Of course, I could not return it. Contacted SubZero and they were very helpful sending me to an authorized parts dealer that "is" OEM. Cost $20 more but just ordered it...will see.

    Soaking the door seal in hot water softens the material and allows stretching instead of tearing, also allows the seal to restore its original shape.

    If you'll allow me to point a few things out good sir. You don't have to soak the gasket for the freezer drawer. I know the instructions say to do so, but that only applies to the larger ones that come folded in a box. This gasket does not come folded in the box so no need for a heat gun/hot water. Also, it's is actually MUCH easier to take the retainers off completely. You can fit them into the gasket much easier when it's off. One last thing that I didn't see you do, some food safe silicone around the corners of the gasket, where in makes contact with the door, will prevent whistling when you shut the drawer.

    • @monatheformerferalcat

      This was helpful - which side of gasket do you put silicon?
      between door and gasket or other side of gasket where it meets freezer

    • @chiefchero6198
      @chiefchero6198 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@monatheformerferalcat along the corners where the gasket meets the door. I’d say about 4-6 inches in each direction is sufficient. Doesn’t take much. A simple bead along the white plastic door liner will do. Otherwise, when you tighten the screws, a bunch will squish out of the edges.

    If the door seal is installed correctly you won't need silicone. Many of my customers expect the door to whistle when closing as a confirmation that freezer is working properly, but adding silicone won't hurt.

    Thank you for your great instructions. I bought an aftermarket part and it installed perfectly on my 650 freezer drawer. I didn’t use silicone. The gasket magnets seem very weak and the drawer is easy to open. The freezer hasn’t been able to get to 0 degrees. After a few hours, it’s at 8. When I close the drawer, I don’t hear the vacuum like sound I used to hear. Doesn’t seem to seal nearly as well as the old worn out gasket. Should I try a better part or is there something else I can try? Thanks for your help.

    You don't have to soak the gasket in hot water, it just makes it easier to put on.

  • @SubZeroSpecialists

    I wouldn't use an aftermarket gasket because they're not made as well as the factory.

  • @SubZeroSpecialists
    @SubZeroSpecialists  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wouldn't recommend an aftermarket door seal. You can get the exact replacement part from an authorized parts distributor. I use Northeast Certified Parts 800-542-2313. You'll need a 1/4" hex head driver to loosen the screws. Starting at the top is my preferred process.

    If the door is all stainless you cannot take it apart. If it’s a stainless panel you can slide it out.

  • @SubZeroSpecialists

    The freezer door seal must be air tight or you will get condensation or frost buildup. Check around the whole perimeter of the door with a dollar bill, there should be drag, if not then the seal isn’t sealing and you may need to adjust the door hinges. Look up our tech-help files on subzerospecialists.com, there should be some instructions on how to align the doors.

      Do you have an aftermarket for gaskets? I have a 561 and unable to locate a replacement part. Also looked at this door and has socket head on the steel plate that holds the gasket in place. Soaking seems like it'll make it easier. Since I don't plan to remove the door (Freezer) I would imagine start on top down.

    You are always better off using the parts from the manufacturer they’re better quality. As for the freezer not being cold enough I doubt if it’s the seal unless you have a wide gap somewhere. Make sure the condenser is clean and set at 0 degrees, also check the freezer for ice accumulation and fan operation.

    • @WilliamSmith-hq2hr
      @WilliamSmith-hq2hr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your reply. Turned out I wasn’t patient enough. Subzero says to wait 24 hours after any kind of repair. The freezer reached 0 overnight and has remained there, even after I replaced the fridge gasket and cleaned the condenser, although I had the unit off for a couple hours during that time. Everything is good. I’m back to dealing with a leaking condensate trough at the back of the refrigerator. Drain is clear, but the condensate leaks through the back of the trough and through the screw holes and around the screw heads. Ice forms. This has been a big problem. The new fridge gasket seals well, and it was part of the problem. But I still have this to deal with. Going to try a food grade, waterproof caulk on the trough. Not sure what else to do.

    • @VickyGeagan
      @VickyGeagan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do not use the cheap aftermarket parts their counterfeit and do not have the magnets in the gaskets so they will not seal properly. I replaced the gaskets for my sub zero 650 f with aftermarket ones and they did not work properly and leaked. I ordered replacements directly from sub zero's parts manufacturer their website is here www.refrigeratorpartreplacements.com/ they have all their replacement parts expect for their door panel they can be custom manufactured through interstate plastics made to size just have your panel size ready when you order and order the them in the abs plastic I had to replace my freezer drawer panel and it worked out great also real easy to clean. the only kind that will not make is the stainless steel I used the abs extruded plastic can not even tell that is is not the original hope this helps anyone.

    My sub zero 550 is not making ice well. I pretty much have to do the jumping across the terminals to make it wake up or work. I replaced the unit and the water pump. I am worried it is the condenser but I am going to try this door seal next.
    it seems that perhaps the top part of the fridge is not cold enough to activate the ice removal cycle. The door seal is damaged like the one in the video.
    Is it possible it is the door seal that is preventing the ice maker cycling. The temp control is at 4.

    Great Video. My 650 is around 20 years old. The Freezer Gasket is ripped along the top like your video shows. In addition, my ice seems to clump up. I am assuming that the gasket is leaking in some warmer air. What is your opinion on this? (Without actually seeing the unit)
    TIA

    • @SubZeroSpecialists
      @SubZeroSpecialists  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be the gasket if it's sucking in warm air, but it could also be the ice maker itself. Change the gasket first and monotor.

I assume if you ever told us how to replace spark plugs in a car your instructions would be how to put it in but not how to take it out. A WASTE IF I COULD NOT GET TO YOUR STEP AS IT WAS IN THIS CASE!
