What was your favorite part of the original Mario Movie?
EDIT: I don't know how I got "Richard" out of "Roland", so my apologies.

Either Daisy’s first encounter with Yoshi, or when Luigi tries asking Daisy out on a dinner date.
      Or just Yoshi in general.

Strangely enough, I find the overall plots the 2 Super Mario Bros. Movies kinda similar, it's almost like the 2023 movie is a remake of this one, but more faithful to the source material.

ok, i’m gonna blow your f**kin’ mind here: the 2023 film is secretly a reboot of the super show (y’know, the one with Lou Albano). think about it: peach is a lot closer to princess toadstool from the cartoon, bowser’s a lot crueler like king koopa, and even the licensed songs you can argue are a reference to the super show (which also had 80’s songs play during action sequences during the original broadcast). hell, THE FILM STARTS WITH THE DANG THEME SONG! (the plumbing commercial, for those reading who aren’t familiar)

The one thing the live action Mario Bros Movie does better than the Illumination version is that it actually has my boy Iggy.

I remember finding out this movie existed thanks to surfing on youtube when I was 10. They had it split into parts, so watching through it was quite an experience. As someone born in 1999, and only absorbed Mario content through the games, it was so weird seeing this movie and how they changed do much from the games. Despite all that, I still had a good time watching, and to this day, I still unironically enjoy it for how weird the film is as a whole.

0:13 I was waiting for you to mention that. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has taken the world by storm, but it's still a way different compared to the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film with a very similar title. Good job there guys.

Even though it probably wasn’t intentional, I like how the “final battle” scene with Mario and Koopa on the bridge kinda references the final boss from the original games, I thought it was kinda cute. It would’ve been kind of cool to see Mario and Koopa fight on the bridge but that’s just me.

I feel like the one inescapable fatal flaw of the original Mario Bros. movie is it tries to explain too much. I like the Illumination version better because it actually understands the source material, even calling back moments from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show and other Nintendo properties, while retaining the core parts of Mario, including parts introduced in the original Mario movie. It's definitely the version of the Mario movie I wish existed when I was a kid.
That said, though, a small part of me wants to see a remake of the original film, only more faithful to the actual source material. The Super Mario canon is actually pretty whimsical, so there is definitely room for this mess of a masterpiece, and I may be in the minority, but I'd love to see Mario reimagined in this gritty edgy 90s live-action realism. We could probably do it justice in present day; just look at Detective Pikachu. I could see a remake of this movie thriving as a refreshing Mario parody.
(As it is, though, this movie feels like bad fanfiction, like the kind of fanfiction you create when you don't have a story in mind and just want to fill space. It might have ideas that could be made into a good story, but they are not arranged that way as is.
For example, elements from the original movie I like include:
    Mario's voice and personality
Mario's adventure being made into a video game (yikes, though Miyamoto's probably cringing over that cameo he made)
Mario being Luigi's big brother; Luigi's cowardly nature juxtaposed with his caring and kind personality kind of hints at him being a little brother who looks up to Mario, so this really makes sense.
Koopa being able to turn himself into a human being, but it should have been done with magic, not technology
Overall, I feel like the Mario movie had some good ideas, but it was "ahead of its time" in the sense that the special effects were not advanced enough to bring some of the ideas to life.)

I vaguely recall seeing the original Mario movie at some point in my childhood, but I can’t remember exactly when. It was one of those movies where, despite being a fan of its source material, I just didn’t care enough about it to revisit it.
Looking back on it now, I don’t think it’s really THAT bad, but I wouldn’t call it great or anything either. It definitely makes for a super fun experience with friends, though!
I enjoyed this review a whole lot! Your charisma keeps getting better and better.

YES!! THE MARIO BROTHERS MOVIE!! I literally have not watched this film since I was a child so I didn't know like anything. The behind the scenes story is crazy I also didn't know anything about that (aside from what you've told me) . Sad it was such a bad experience
I'm glad at least people still enjoy it even though it's such a strange film
I always really appreciate how comprehensive your reviews are. This is a good example, I think, of how much homework you do for each video!

I still need to see this movie. I loved the new CGI movie, and I know this one is nothing like that, but as a big Mario fan, I feel should give it a watch a t least once, no matter how bad it is. It doesn't seem to be on any streaming services though. I may need to buy a Blu-Ray copy of this, along with the new one.

you damn near immediately lost me completely when you dissed the illumination film. yeah, it’s a kids film, but it’s based on a kids game. and even *then* there’s quite a lot more to appreciate if you’re a mario superfan, *especially* if you grew up with the cartoons, as a lot of the deviations from the game canon are rooted in the super show (the bros. being from brooklyn, peach’s more proactive [aka “ShE’s JuSt DaIsY!!!1!”] role, bowser’s more cruel characterization being based on king koopa [he was originally gonna be even closer to koopa in the first draft of the script], and even the much-maligned licensed music. all that was missing was a guest cameo from a pro wrestler [hey, maybe the rock could be a bit part in the sequel!]). it’s still definitely a kids film through and through, but i do appreciate it for bringing the dic cartoons to a new generation.
