    I actually love The Lost Levels. When you've mastered Super Mario Bros. the game feels boring and too easy, The Lost Levels really push the gameplay of the first game to its limits so it's really refreshing to play.

    I remember going through lost levels thinking “I mean come on, it’s old and easy” and then remember how much my hands would be sweating, my heart racing, and only by world 5 and be thinking “good God, am I in HELL?!” And then asking myself, “Is this really worth it?!”

    One note of difference between versions of Mario 2 vs the Lost Levels All Stars version, are the springs work better in the original version, where as the all stars version you can fail to get the spring jump and just do a little bounce and probably die.

  • @bemasaberwyn55

    Fun fact Coop, I have never actually beaten Lost Levels as Mario. Luigi's higher floatier jump was always more conducive to my play style. Also I beat this before I had beaten the first Mario Brothers and the u.s.a. version of Mario 2

    The Animal Crossing ports could also be downloaded onto a GBA as long as it stayed on! I used to download Super Mario Bros onto my SP and take it with me because I could.

    31:37 Sadly, while i have a lot of love for the SMB1 on All-stars, i feel some of the small changes kinda ruin it for me.
    Destroying bricks now remove your speed entirely, and they fixed the hitbox on Mario's lower half, which means the trick to jump over the piranha plants is not possible anymore.
    I've seen a lot of people who love SMB1 and can even speedrun it have a hard time even beating the All-stars version sometimes because some of it's minor changes are enough to mess up entire runs because of this small things.

      Damn, SUPER MARIO BROS being ruined because they took away cheese strats is a new level of anal for me. You could just... play it normally and enjoy it?

    • @gumi2521
      @gumi2521 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@williammcguire130 How is being able to have proper control over Mario a cheese strat?
      Literally 4-2 has a section that is harder now because of this issue, since the game wasn't designed around Mario loosing momentum when hitting bricks as tall Mario specifically. Small Mario doesn't have this issue, so it's 100% an oversight.
      Also this issue isn't present in any other 2D Mario game, this is ONLY a SMB1 All-stars issue and nothing else.

    Being from the US and I never been outside of where I was born… that being said, I HAVE played Super Mario Bros. 2(J/The Lost Levels) at first on the US Super Mario All-Stars, then Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, I then imported q Famicom and Famicom Disk System buying a copy of it on the OG Japanese hardware… and I then bought the GBA Famicom Mini port! I completed it on most versions(at least, GBC has the Original graphics instead of the actual graphics, the screen crunch makes it even HARDER!) But I did participate in the Nintendo Power "No Warp" challenge for the patch, so there's that! But I actually prefer the OG Japanese Famicom Disk System version! Another "neat feature" of the Famicom Disk System version is the retry option removes the star progress, sort of like the Kill/Elimination mode in Zelda games and the Famicom Disk System version of the Metroid and "Kid Icarus" games! I guess because if you keep beating the game, it keeps adding more stars filling in the title card with rows of stars until a certain amount! 😉😉

    Feels weird to go into that much depth with the early history of Donkey Kong and not mention Radar Scope, Popeye, or John Kirby. But I'm sure if you went into the weeds on every such thing the video would be so long you'd still be editing it today.

    King Kong is in the public domain, any one can use the character or reference it. Donkey Kong is also a different character, even if similar in that initial game. (Maybe it wasn't at the time?)

      The novelization of King Kong is public domain and Warner Bros, RKO Pictures, Paramount, and Universal owns their film rights/interpretations of King Kong. After the Nintendo lawsuit, companies like Colleco and Atari sued Universal for telling them to pay royalties of King Kong.

    they rejected 'lost levels' because 'too hard' but games like silver surfer and arki warriors were released?
    Games that were not even playtested properly got released.. I find this excuse to be just that.
    i want to know how they felt when they palytested ghost and goblins for the first time.
    This is so inconsistent with some of the release.

    Lost Levels aren't that bad, there's only a few spots where it's kinda BS, like in one of the dash -3 levels requires a full running jump and bounce off of a koopa trooper that's not even visible from the platform you jump from to bounce on top of something else, that may or may not even actually be at a position that Mario can bounce off of and get enough height to make the landing.

    Lost Levels peak level design moment: 8-2 is an endless cycle until you hit a specific brick to go to the end of the level.
    But Im one of those people who prefer the original 1 and 2 over their All Stars re-release, with the reason being the physics alone.
    But other than that good video!

    • @MisterSpeedStacking

  • @MisterSpeedStacking
    @MisterSpeedStacking 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    There's not a single leap of faith in Mario 2, you can always scroll the screen enough to see the enemy you must jump on. Howard Phillips was a scrub. Your only critique of the game is that you're awful at video games and the game doesn't reward you for playing carelessly and mistiming your jumps. Poison Mushrooms are a clever way to add risk to question blocks, and they give you more than enough time to react. World 9, as anyone with basic knowledge of the history of these games, is a reference to the minus world. "For Super Players" is not a "retitle", it's the original subtitle of the FDS game, to exclude whiny babies like you from purchasing it.
