It's been a lifetime since the (heavily) misguided Super Mario Bros. movie was released to a not-so positive response. And as more worthy adaptations of beloved properties are commonplace now, I think it's time to forgive this movie.

I wholeheartedly, unabashedly adore the old Mario bros movie. One of my favorites

I like to refer to this movie as the one that “accidentally invented the gritty reboot.”
Definitely one of my biggest guilty pleasures. Like you said, the highlight of the movie is Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo in the roles of Mario and Luigi. It felt like there was a genuine comradery between the two, and it felt like they really had known each other for years.

Its interesting how they become the game characters since they don't wear their traditional red and green for most of the movie.

I always loved watching this movie on DVD as a kid, yeah it isn't super accurate to the games, like at all besides references, it's lots of fun and I personally loved the "Bob-Omb" scene at the end, it has its charm for a bad video game adaptation compared to other adaptations that are rather bland and borderline unwatchable.
At least it's better than Jeffy's 18th Birthday.

For me despite all the differences, it still felt like a Mario movie, but I think it’s mostly for the cast , I really believed as a kid that those two actors were Mario and Luigi with how good they play the roles ,
I really vibe with the '93 movie, mostly because i don't really like Mario and it's lack of interesting lore. For example, the “Dystopian Blade Runner-esque fungi-infested world with a more dark comical twist” from the movie is far more interesting to me than the actual mushroom kingdom from the game.
I wouldn't sell the Mushroom Kingdom short. The RPGs showed us the story-telling potential that region has. It's a lot more than the stale New Super Mario series made it seem.

I appreciate this movie because, as Miyamoto recognized, there was effort, the writers and directors WANTED to do a good adaptation... then Hollywood came and messed everything up. STILL! The crew tried to fix this sinking ship the best they could: I love recognize the elements from the game: the characters, the names, the setups like the fight on a BRIDGE and a "suspended bowl" like the Koopa Clown Car... and they wanted to fix it more in the sequel by explaining "You know all those game elements that weren't in the movie?" "Yes?" "They went extint during Koopa's reign, we are Jurrassic Parking them, right now, while Wart is trying to invade us all with the Shy Guys!"
There was genuine effort. YES! It's undeniable.
I’ve always adored the live action film. I’m glad it’s getting its due
When I first saw the Movie, I thought it was weird. But, now I actually liked watching it.
For the longest time, I Mandela Effected myself into thinking Dennis Hopper had BRAIDS instead of the spikes for his hair and I actually disappointed myself that Dennis Hopper as Koopa didn't have weird blond braids.
Also, Bob as Mario is Dad Mario. He comes off as gruff but he's a heroic teddy bear at heart.
I’ve seen this film multiple times, the first couple times was way back in 2012 and I found it to be an enjoyable ride. My mom has seen it twice and she likes it, I was exposed to it thanks to the Mario wiki and Nintendo Power. While the movie was a dud and a sequel wasn’t made, a follow-up online did come about years later with the fans at the helm and some of the film’s writers did get involved. While this new take on Mario was alright for it’s time despite failing, I do look forward to seeing the new animated movie and am hopeful it will succeed where the OG failed and get sequels. Mario is unforgettable, no matter what continuity or who does him. Thanks, man.

While I will stand by two Sonic live-action movies.....I have to be honest, animated Mario movie looks so good. And live-action one is a guilty pleasure, plus I'm impressed that they tried to do something new with Mario in 1993....it's just went wrong in some places.
To quote matt mcmuscles the director duo wanted to tell their own story and used Mario as a vehicle to do so.

The Weapons Factory Remix at the end was composed by radiowar. The TH-camr I credited just had the video and named radiowar as the rightful owner.
I mean, a feel like faux-adaptation is just a more public-friendly term for the fan fiction term AU. It's the same characters with the same characterization put into a different situation than is the source material's premise. Though I guess that's not always accurate, such as with the Dragon Ball adaptation-that for sure had the same characters (mostly), but definitely not the same characterization. So maybe they have some overlap, even if they're not entirely synonymous
Dragon Ball reminded me of Super Mario Bros as being a bare bones adaptation of the source material's plot but with references here and there. I think it will get it's due someday as well since its still entertaining, source material aside.

Not gonna lie, not many would go out and say we should forgive this movie, so the sheer fact you’re saying this earns my respect. And I do like you bringing up some actual positives the movie had. Sure it’s the truest antithesis to a faithful adaptation, but I think I’ll try and forgive it. Especially since we’ll potentially get that faithful adaptation in April.
I'd rather forget than forgive, but damn, if that "MONKEY" voice clip doesn't get me every time.

Well, at least Mario got a second chance for American cinema. Hasbro outright abandoned Jem after the failure. If it's not board games or the occasional Potato Head or even Nerf, said company does either MLP or Transformers nowadays, but hardly the other IPs.
Or can also apply to the 2019 Doom Annihilation movie.
The Super Mario Bros Super show is about just as faithful as this movie, and you could argue that it's even worse. At least this has a plot, even though the plot relize heavily on something stupid with the meteor sending dinosaurs to another dimension
I legitimately *LOVE* this movie! I know it's not accurate to the games basically at all but it's just so entertaining. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo are great as Mario and Luigi. They have a great chemistry. Dennis Hopper is hilarious as King Koopa. Samantha Mathis is good as Daisy. The practical effects and set design are amazing. The costume design is really good. The soundtrack is great. The supporting cast is good. I think it's so underrated and overrated.
Mario & Luigi travel to another land and rescue the Princess from Koopa; it's pretty accurate to the games.
Pretty funny that the new movie shares elements of this movie (while being slightly less accurate in that Mario is trying to save Luigi, in games, Luigi has been the one to save Mario).

I honestly love the old Super Mario Bros movie. The only thing that bothers me about it is how poorly the actors were treated.
BTW. On the topic of “Faux Adaptations,” did you know that Shrek and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs were kinda Faux Adaptations yet managed to be good?
The original books they were based on were nigh unrecognizable from the movie yet somehow were great. Thought I’d mention.

Wanna see bad? Helluva boss! Revenge of the fallen is childsplay. Like matt mcmuscles said, director duo wanted telling their own different story, just using Mario as a vehicle for doing so.
Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel just suck. I really want to know what people see in it. It's overpraised and really isn't that funny.

I like this movie
This 1993 movie is very trippy and surreal and I’m still mad that they didn’t give luigi a mustache! But in my opinion I think Bob Hoskins is perfectly casted as Mario because Bob Hoskins’s voice suits Mario perfectly in my opinion

I remember seeing this movie on tv late at night when surfing for things to watch and I was so damn confused. I was like where’s Yoshi? Where’s the koopas and bowser? And why do they look like that?!
Yeah, live action Mario is a bit of a train wreck fever dream but it kinda has a charm in places.
Honestly, I like the Faux Adaptation idea. There are lots of film adaptations that just are nothing like their source material to the point if you didn't read the title or weren't told you wouldn’t know its adapting anything.

There's a actually a sequel to this movie done by one of the writers but in comic form, I don't remember if it carried on or not.
I enjoyed this film, I like to think of this movie as an alternate universe of Mario. Kinda like Spider-Man with their different universes seen in No Way Home such as the Tobey Maguire universe, the Andrew Garfield universe or the Tom Holland/MCU universe.
If Imagi Studios made a Mario film, it would have some art design of a CG animated 1993 Mario, Toad, Luigi, etc.

When I read the title of the video I entered just to say that I'll never forget it... but as I watched the video then... I totally do forgive that movie yet excuse it or find its reasons... it can work as a "what-if" or "another-story"... but at least I noticed that they've warned us about this by sticking that "This Ain't No Game" title; telling us never to expect a game-adaptation... 😅

I was like 5 when this came out 👨🏻🦳. But I was six when I saw it. I loved it.
Honestly, I'm biased because I'm a huge Luaisy and Daisy fan but I liked the fact it was Daisy in this movie.
So the reason koopa is evil is he was the one who made it that way. Koopa destroyed his own planet to make his vision of Manhatten that he viewed when he visited our word for the first time. He was obsessed with the concepts of the human world. And used what he learned to take over the fantasy dino world.
Atleast that's my fanfiction. Parker Bennet actually goes more into detail I think. Also there's the unofficial officls comic that give sus a bit more lore
Unfortunately this movie isn't available on Blu-ray or any streaming platform so the only way to watch it is on DVD

I’m mixed, on the one had I genuinely like this movie. The different world compared to the Mario games out at the time was something really different and I like the dystopian style cite.
But on the other they had 4 main games out and they chose not to do anything with the existing material, like why not pick Toadstool? She was the main damsel in every game and people knew her but they decided to pick a character from a hand held that no one really know and wouldn’t get popular till 8 years later
