@@JohnSmith-sy6zm There is no scrolling. It's a single screen game that creates the illusion of scrolling. That's what working around the limitations of the platform is all about. 🤷🏻♂️
The C64 version seems to be an excellent game on its own. All it is missing from perfection are sound effects... and maybe parallax scrolling with the background city scape of the first level.
The Megadrive/Genesis edition is definitely the best port, but the ZX Spectrum version had its own character which isn't obvious until you play it. The music is great on real hardware (audio emulation still can't quite match the physical hardware) and your character feels faster than many other versions. Admittedly there's slowdown during screen scrolling, but I find it creates a bullet time effect that gives you time to take out enemies.
I got this with the Night Moves pack on the Commodore 64, and it was my favorite version. I didn't like the Amiga version. If I remember correctly, if you died and the keys dropped, a lot of the time they would fall in places you cant get to or get "stuck".

Play test. Bug fix. Add music. Ship the game. Get money. So on and so on. And that's how all arcade ports were made back in the 70's and 80's.
Palette data from the Amiga version was ported from the ST and lacked the proper colours. This was later fixed in a patch by members of the WHDLoad team. With the patch you can also use the cd32 and 2 button pads for the game. Music was just ok IMO. Amiga version was I believe the only 2 player version at the time. I had the C64 version back then which was also pretty good. MD version looks nice with the parallax.
***** After watching a lot of these comparison videos I'm beginning to think the Atari ST may have done more harm to the Amiga than Microsoft ever did due to all the crappy ST ports the Amiga had to put up with. It seems pretty rare in these videos to find an Amiga game that actually took advantage of the Amiga's abilities.
The Atari ST version is full screen like the Amiga version, Atari ST ports would often have cropped boardered screens and smaller playing areas. There was a price to pay for that full screen though because the smooth scrolling had to be sacrificed to allow for it. The ST version jumps from one screen to the next without smoothly panning across like the Amiga version.

Mark Dickson It wasn't a poor capture. I tried capturing this footage from 6 emulations including MESS & they all turned out dark. I even attempted to brighten it on movie edit pro but in doing so it made the video blotchy. I captured all the footage the exact same way. I had the c64 version and I believe I finished it on my second ever attempt..Joe blade 2 was another example of easy gameplay. Midnight resistance is a great game though ;)
Something must be wrong with your arcade game version of the game.. Originally the arcade version allows to rotate the gun, the same as the Genesis version..
it is. In fact, most people say that Midnight Resistance was Data East's answer to Konami's Contra. And while I do believe this, I also find MR to be a spiritual successor to Heavy Barrel which uses keys and the rotating joystick scheme as well.
Gfx (despite some harsh colouring) and overall Sound go to Mega Drive. Playability goes to Amiga for single player and its unique 2-player option, despite having only one button, the music sounds better too. Also, the backgrounds seem to be drawn closer to the originals. Most accurate in terms of tricks against foes goes to Spectrum (and Amstrad). Spectrum wins the 8-bit crown here. C64 version seems like a big wasted opportunity, could be much better.
If we exclude the Arcade version, Amiga's looks the most impressive graphically. While Sega's has the best sounding music. Funny how that works. And I have no idea wth an Amstrad is.
There is no point in producing a video of games that played in much lower resolutions than 480p in hi res. It would do nothing to improve the video quality. The only thing it would accomplish is a false sense of worth that isn't needed.
I was expecting the arcade to be the clearly superior version, I have to say I like the Genesis version all around much better than the arcade, even with the music (this part surprised me the most since I already saw how bland the graphics were)! That leaves arcade second, and from watching the video, Amiga third, then ST, C64 after that, and the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad versions were both just horrid, the hardware was just never meant for something this detailed. The Amstrad version probably beats the ZX Spectrum one, except for the lack of music, which the ZX Spectrum actually does have.
His emulator wasn't set up correctly. The Midnight Resistance arcade machine had a special 8-way input for aiming the gun: gamesdbase.com/Media/SYSTEM/Arcade/Controls/Big/Controls_Midnight_Resistance_-_1989_-_Data_East.png. The Genesis version was extremely fun but the Arcade version was by far and away, the superior Midnight Resistance. The Genesis version is missing small assets in the background that the arcade was able to display.
Ayo Kayo Gameplay-wise, the Genesis couldn't do the controls, and I never looked at the backgrounds enough to notice the lacking details. I just thought the arcade's color usage was a bit bland. But I don't think there's much debate that the music in the Genesis version was superior. So yeah, arcade for the gameplay, Genesis for the music, and graphically it depends on what you're looking for. I think the Genesis has better color usage, but the arcade has some extra details, and also two-player mode.
Mega Drive has nice parallax scroll but the graphics feel less faithful to the arcade than the Amiga (lacking some detail). Music could have been so much better on the Amiga but they would have needed someone like Chris Huelsbeck or Martin Walker to do the job.
For arcade conversions it definitely was (it was simplest and cheapest platform of '80s too, while iirc Atari was most pricey and graphically capable - google enthusiast developing Wolfenstein for Atari 8-bit), but in that era it had advantages like faster CPU and higher resolution - iconic StarRaiders2 are as playable on Spectrum as on AtariXL, but there were no Elite and other "real" 3d games for Atari, and C64 also was behind in that area. Games that were done with hardware limitations in mind had advantage of superior resolution though. Yes, ZX aged badly moment _next_ generation of home PCs like Amiga and AtariST arrived, but lot of people still choose higher-res ZX games over snappier and colorful but lower-res other platforms of HIS era for their nostalgic emulated game-fix.
Proof is there dude. Are you literally saying that you'd rather play the speccy version of this rather than the superior genesis version? yeah, that's what I thought.
Amiga is the best version, well it's "almost" the best version, but a lack of two player option on the Megadrive version is unforgivable in my opinion. Midnight Resistance was the second game I had on my Amiga, short load times and 2 player coop. Absolutely awesome.
My rank from best to worst: 1) Arcade 2) Mega Drive 3) Amiga (better music than the MD version, but graphics are too dim and gameplay is slower) 4) Atari ST (graphics look washed out, no in-game music, decent speed) 5) Spectrum (ugly graphics of course, good music, good speed) 6) C64 (probably more polished than the Spectrum version, music is probably better, gameplay is not as accurate as the Spectrum though) 7) Amstrad (a Spectrum port, only 4 colours but looks okay, sprites are better, no in-game music, much slower than the other versions)
I would say the MD version also has better music than the Amiga version a lot like the Arcade version but sounds more powerful IMO. The Arcade the soundtrack sounds muted in comparison and the Amiga version sounds very much like midi with a bad flute kind of sound font it could have been much better.
I personally feel like the Genesis version was better than the arcade. Graphically & Audio. Had the same experience with Gauntlet arcade vs. Gauntlet 4 genesis.
Ramiro1992 Does good music save it from 'disaster' status? Actually, is it really that bad? apart from lacking 2 players and looking a little bland, the Megadrive/Genesis version seems alright.
Fixed the broken ZX Spectrum footage. The rom was mislabeled. I had to locate a new one for this video. I hope you enjoy the repaired video.

The Amiga version needs fixing too. So dark and at 1.5x - 2x speed? In my opinion the best version for balance of graphics and music.

Proof is there dude. Are you literally saying that you'd rather play the speccy version of this rather than the superior genesis version? yeah, that's what I thought.
TheDemoniusX yeah, the Spectrum version of this game is bloody brilliant. I'm playing it on my 128k Speccy right now
The Spectrum has very bad scrolling!!!!!
Atari owner could only dream about games that were on zx spectrum, amstrad or c64...
Hey Gaming History Source! I have a challenge for you! Compare monopoly!
totally agree! genesis or here in the uk megadrive wins easily.
You imbecile
La versione Amiga è stata velocizzata..In realtà risulta più lenta e fluida nello scrolling
Never heard of this game in my entire life. ....LOL
Sega wins.
Wow, Amstrad owners got screwed. It's basically a worse version of the Spectrum game.
Remember one thing, Megadrive version have no 2 players mode, it sucks a lot...
too sad that mega drive had no multiplayer
Amiga version looks damp.
LOL Spectrum & Amstrad versions. What a joke haha
Amiga is the best version, well it's "almost" the best version, but a lack of two player option on the Megadrive version is unforgivable in my opinion. Midnight Resistance was the second game I had on my Amiga, short load times and 2 player coop. Absolutely awesome.
Amiga best music and graphics
Mega Drive / Genesis wins!
The graphics are ok but it does not have proper scrolling,The best version is the amiga one.
My rank from best to worst:
1) Arcade
2) Mega Drive
3) Amiga (better music than the MD version, but graphics are too dim and gameplay is slower)
4) Atari ST (graphics look washed out, no in-game music, decent speed)
5) Spectrum (ugly graphics of course, good music, good speed)
6) C64 (probably more polished than the Spectrum version, music is probably better, gameplay is not as accurate as the Spectrum though)
7) Amstrad (a Spectrum port, only 4 colours but looks okay, sprites are better, no in-game music, much slower than the other versions)
I would switch Genesis/MD and arcade around personally, and put the C64 above the Spectrum, but that's just me.
Amiga is the best version along with Arcade. Don't care for the Genesis version.
@Something the amiga version had the ST palette bug. This is why the graphics are so dark !
Amiga had better graphics (bugged in the footage) and better music (also bugged in this footage).
this game is awful, genesis version is a disaster
But... the music!
andyukmonkey yes maybe but good music does not make a good game, the gameplay is the most important fact
Ramiro1992
Does good music save it from 'disaster' status?
Actually, is it really that bad? apart from lacking 2 players and looking a little bland, the Megadrive/Genesis version seems alright.
andyukmonkey yes it is very bad, there's much better run and gun games suchs as metal slug, bloody wolf and contra
Ramiro1992
It doesn't have to be the best run 'n' gun game in the entire Megadrive/Genesis library to be any good :S
