I actually did the BBC/Micro Conversion back in the 80's for tynesoft ... can't remember it being so flickery. Can only assume its on an emulator ? Good game to code tho ...
gameboy color version, i think takes the cake. sure, it is just a smaller version of the nes game, but it looks better, and is harder than that version.
The GBC version completely dominates this one. That game has 3 difficulty levels, 32 maps, changes to the weapons to make them all good in the right scenario, improved AI, and tons of different music. It's simply the best of the bunch. Add in the fact that it's portable, and there's no denying it.
Sega's was great to play even better as a two player game, just so fun with far better custom music so you didn't feel like you were playing a cheap port-over. Best version by far and uniquely different to the others.
The goal of each stage is to find a bag of money, a passport, a key and... something else, as well as a briefcase to hold them all (you can only hold one if you don't have the briefcase), then get to the exit. The items, along with weapons you can use in battle, are found hidden behind furniture -- but you can booby-trap furniture, as well as the doors between rooms and even the rooms themselves, to kill your opponent and increase your chances. It's basically the best 2-player game ever.
NES version is still my favorite, although the Game Boy color version is nice. The sounds of them hitting each other sound like they were ripped from Double Dragon's punches.
I know what you mean. I always had better luck finding people to play Island Caper with. It was way more straight forward making the missile and burying its parts.
I loved the atari 8 bit version myself as a kid , never really liked the sequels though (possibly as for us tape based gamers they involved hefty multi loading!)
Great video! Never knew that there were so many versions. Never heard of a Master System and a Gamebyo version. But a lot of the versions are surprisingly good.
There are 3 proper conversions on Commodore C16; Plus/4 on 64K (the version put here should fit into 16K RAM, so a really reduced version). Although there were numerous Plus/4 machines with 64K RAM, only very few commercial games made above 16K RAM to able to reach C16 and C116 users, that 's why they are reduced versions. On plus4world.com in the Search funtion you will find this, and other three versions, including the proper conversion from C64. You can try with the online Java emulator too "Play onlin" There are several intros before the real game starts, it was a kind of habit in the 90s at this scene. :-) The sprite handling and colors are as good as on C64, though the music do not reach the C64 level, still enjoyable, though little more harsh. Those 64K versions show the real capabilities of the Commodore 264 series (C16/C116 and Plus/4)
Classic game! C-64 and Atari 8-bit is excellent. NES version looks very nice also. Never played the 16-bit versions but certainly look the best of the bunch yes?
The Atari 8bit vers here is very poorly emulated. It's a very good if not the best of the 8bit computer versions, especially its music uses the most channels and sounds very lively. Gameboy color version does have more detail and colors but it's ~14 years newer.
/wiki/Spy_vs._Spy_%28computer_game%29 This is a better description link, on Wikipedia. Paste it on after the .org. Leads straight to the game's page. My favorite version of these games was the NES version. It always sounded serious to me.
This game was so HARD to figure out without a manual. I think you could set it to computer vs computer so I could watch how they set the traps. All I knew was that the computer would keep getting to the airport and eventually I realized I was supposed to find the passport, documents, plane ticket (?) and BOOBYTRAP them so I could escape, hahaha.
It probably took me a year to realize that you grab the umbrella so you can deflect the battery acid, haha. And the scissors to disarm the gun/door trap. I think you get a set of pliers to disarm the spring?
not being a hater but, is that you playing? because in most of the versions, i cant describe if the version is bad or if is you that's not playing it right
Wow, NES version of Spy Vs. Spy really does looks ten times better over the SMS version. Glad I'm not missing much on using NES more than I use my SMS power base for Genesis. Even NES cover art looks lot nicer and much more in line with cloak n' Dagger style.
Some of the later platforms add too much colour and, as such, are not faithful to the source comics. Don't confuse pretty colours/graphics with playability :>
The Nintendo one was a blast, except when your friend would be a total dick and boobytrap the doors leading to the room with the exit while still inside it. If you set off the trap he would grab the passport you dropped and win, or you stalemate and the time runs out.
never knew there was an atari ST version... i played the 8 bit version a lot with friends... and WTF with the sega master system music? why did the replace the original song with that crappy remake?
PvP or against computer. If you are in the same room, you duel to the death with either night-sticks of karate depending on the version. The goal is to search every room for items (passport, plane ticket, secret documents) but you can only carry one at a time. Someone here mentioned a briefcase allows you to hold all the items which makes sense. But since you can't carry all of them at once without that briefcase, you must re-hide then booby-trap each piece so that the other player dies if retrieving it. You have to remember what traps you set and you can find in certain rooms umbrellas to disarm doors that have buckets of acid above them, scissors to cut trip-wires on doors rigged with a gun to shoot at you, pliers from a toolbox to disarm the spring in furniture/cabinets/paintings.... and I think a bucket of sand or water???? to disarm bombs. Once you are able to gather all the items (or steal them from the other player by beating them up) you can go to the room marked "EXIT" which takes you to an airplane hanger where you escape.
+vintageceilingfans Those limited colours were all that were available on the older platforms. As the comics (on which it was based) also had minimal colours then what's the problem?
Nope. The Amiga and ST versions are just piss poor conversions of the C64 version with not much improvement on the graphics. The Amiga version also has UNRESPONSIVE controls
I actually did the BBC/Micro Conversion back in the 80's for tynesoft ... can't remember it being so flickery. Can only assume its on an emulator ? Good game to code tho ...
You should talk about your experience on camera with programming this game. A lot of people may find it interesting.
+zoopakev1 I also appreciate the work you put into the Acorn Electron version: acornelectron.co.uk/mags/eu/arts/a-spyv.html :-)

Why on earth did you make their skin blue, it makes them look like they have a disease or smth
Why u make them look like they have a disease

The music reminds me of Deja Vu for the NES
I loved this game. I had it for Atari 65xe. Great memories. Loved The Island Caper and Antartic Adventure also.
The GBC version completely dominates this one. That game has 3 difficulty levels, 32 maps, changes to the weapons to make them all good in the right scenario, improved AI, and tons of different music. It's simply the best of the bunch. Add in the fact that it's portable, and there's no denying it.
Atari 8 bit will always be my favourite version. Music - brilliant. Spent countless hours playing back in the day. Faultless game.

took me months to realize that the umbrella, pliers, scissors you'd get weren't gags... they were for disarming the traps, hahaha.
c64 imho, best average of everything, ok gfx, best music.
Gameplay is ALWAYS the most important thing in games, not graphics or sound
NES version is still my favorite, although the Game Boy color version is nice. The sounds of them hitting each other sound like they were ripped from Double Dragon's punches.
C64 and atari version are the best :) so many fun times :')
Acorn Electron version shipped on the same Cassette Tape as the BBC Micro version (side a & side b) so it does apparently exist.
Not gonna lie. GBC music on this is amazingly awesome.
I had this for my ZX. Unfortunately nobody wanted to play with me, but the AI was quite good.
Awwwww
I know what you mean. I always had better luck finding people to play Island Caper with. It was way more straight forward making the missile and burying its parts.
the nes version is the best in my opinion
Came back here for nostalgia reasons. Can’t believe it’s been so long.
One of my favorite video game/computer game related series. Still holding out for Prince of Persia. :)
yeah ! Sorry it took so long. But I hope it was worth the wait ! :)
What was your best spy vs spy version ? Mines is nes

the best multiplayer games ever.
cual versión debería jugar?
the amiga version though i would have said gameboy color if it was on a real screen but.. isnt so i said amiga. best music and gameplay too.
First time i got to play spy vs spy was at a friends house on the C64.Still i was terrible at the game, got confused on how to play it.
Until the amiga i was going to say the sega master system (it came on a card) is the best. I like the music on the commodore 64 one as well.
20:27 this version is awesome I tried already for that app.keep get more improvements commodore
I love the nitendo version i still play it
Pretty lazy programming on the ST and Amiga versions looks just like the 8 bit versions
When you have time, will you remake this video?
The Atari 8bit vers here is very poorly emulated. It's a very good if not the best of the 8bit computer versions, especially its music uses the most channels and sounds very lively. Gameboy color version does have more detail and colors but it's ~14 years newer.
I think out of all of the versions, nes and gbc are the best ones.
The Commodore 16 version wasn't half bad. The perfectly ported Commodore Plus/4 version of this and the sequels from the C64 are much better however.
Amo la versión de Game boy color

Surprised you didn't put the iOS one in.
The iOS version is just an EMULATED version of the C64 version, so it would not make any sense
The only version of the game that went to Brazil was the Master system
Didn't have access to it. :(
Wow, NES version of Spy Vs. Spy really does looks ten times better over the SMS version. Glad I'm not missing much on using NES more than I use my SMS power base for Genesis. Even NES cover art looks lot nicer and much more in line with cloak n' Dagger style.
Gameboy Color, Amiga, Atari ST, C64, XL/XE, CPC. The rest is a joke.
+krokeman
The Gameboy is something different - out of style!
.
1. Amiga & Atari ST
2. XL/XE & C64
3. CPC
the rest - as you mentioned - joke.

SchwartzBwithU color or nes?
that was definitely the master strategy.
the other was to grab one piece and boobytrap a corner room with yourself inside. Same, pretty much.
They look more like Clangers than spies in the Sega version.
mmm Spy vs Spy is out on original xbox,ps2.
The iOS version has the C64 version
Old school

Atari music is not right tempo... must be playing it on NTSC speed.
excellent video
MSX???
There WAS NO MSX port. Not according to Mobygames
never knew there was an atari ST version... i played the 8 bit version a lot with friends...

The game of android is realy cool
Ruan Gamer 1001 An Android SPY vs SPY game doesn't exist, at least in my knowledge.
@@Blaze5857 thats real search on TH-cam

Most of the platforms are terrible with only a few colors.. The NES version is the best, behind it would be the Sega Master System, then Amiga..

The AMIGA and ATARI ST versions didn't update the graphics at all. What lazy ports.
