I’m lucky enough to have met Shawn back in Sac when he was in Far just after Water and Solutions came out. He actually had his email in the cd jacket so I wrote him about the album and he told me about the Ebow. He let me send him a cd of my music which was all crap except one song. He immediately honed in on the one song that was NOT rock. It had an ambient post rock vibe which said something for 1998. He said, “I haven’t heard that before, THAT’S different. Do that, BE that”. He changed my life that day. I focused on my own sound and stopped trying to sound like my favorite bands like Far. I’m still making music and I’m so grateful to say I have my own sound. Thanks Shawn.
I can remember short cellphone vids from Twitter around 2011 when Crosses called themselves Holy Ghost, and a couple jam session excerpts with the Fender Lap Guitar that instantly made me realize this band was gonna be something unique and amazing
Awesome rig rundown! Just saw them at the Palladium on their recent stop here in LA. I was trying to figure out what he was using live to get all those wild sounds. They sounded legit AF live, especially for not having a drummer. I'm usually not into bands that don't have a drummer live but Shaun's production really pulled it off. Banger of a rig rundown!
I thought I'd be watching Chino the whole time, but 90% of the time, I was like, "What?" watching Shaun. What are synth, guitar, and live tracks? Was a great experience.
Great eposode! Loved this band from the beginning but I didn't know that he just started messing up with synths around that time. Listening to the first album he really knew what he was doing. And speaking about the weird notes he and Chino use often, great example is Cadavre Exquis from the EP, one of my favourites of theirs because it sounds so hypnotic. Really glad you managed to grab him for a rundown!
Great rundown, love Crosses and Shaun's compositions are so interesting, always wondered how they were getting those sounds live so this was cool to watch!
Literally searched to see if this was a thing last night. Wanted to see how they got those beefy crunch tones live and was also interested in the lap steel sounds. So surprised to see it today and it answered all my questions. Perfect timing!
Crosses is such a great band! Anything Chino does I love, he just has one of the most amazing voices and melodies of all time, Dan seems like such a cool dude and was happy to be on RR
Saw them in Atlanta, great show. Shaun is killer player and producer, plays what’s necessary. How does Perry always look like he’s fresh off a 3-day bender??
lol putting a peterson strobe on a live pedal board is a ballsy move. They're amazing pedals, but holy shit if you have adhd you'll be tuning for 15 min. *edit* please make that modded synth pedal a reality, that thing is amazing.
Would be nice if you could get more of an explanation of whats going on in the fractal. Need to dig deeper in these rig rundowns now with modelers in the mix.
The Nine Inch Nails drone guitar sound is a guitar with all the strings tuned to the same note, and a slide. Which was probably created by Adrian Belew.
I fucking love the instrumentation on Crosses records. To hear this guy talk about how he thinks not knowing theory can be beautiful cuz you'll do the thing you aren't "supposed" to is so reassuring. Makes me wanna go fuck around in my DAW. I also love those filtertron type pick ups. TV Jones are my absolute favorite for any high gain shit. Hits different. I like when people try to be a little different in this sea of algorithms
Shawn is absolutely 100% correct about knowing to much alters the way you think creatively about playing. I know zero theory, and honestly I see my buddies who do know it always trying to box themselves in to something that otherwise doesn’t necessarily maximize the potential of the music.
Saw Crosses live a few months ago. There are so many tracks being played by the laptop it feels like karaoke to me. One moment he’s playing guitar and you hear guitar and then you see him playing synth but their’s guitar and then back to guitar and still multiple layers of synths. It just feels like the old “live” performances that were on tv when I was a kid where they were just miming to the track off a record. Plenty of people love them live but the album is one thing and to me, live is best when it’s different and spontaneous and unique.
Very lame take… it’s 2024, there is no money to pay a full band and when you have two incredible musicians making such impactful music why would you even taint the well with interchangeable unreliable people to play the shows, constantly adjusting each run.
I get that and agree when there isn't a live drummer or other musicians, the vibe is not as energetic... If I'm paying for a download, the playback is fine, but if I'm going to a concert I want to see a band, not just 2 guys and a laptop. Rock is not rap.
crosses to me is really just a spotlight on Shaun and Chino, and the things they have achieved together, it's a duo act. most of crosses songs aren't focusing on the drums, rather the synth sounds and beats that Shaun creates and plays live with his set up. I think it's kinda cool to see just 2 people making music rather than the regular band set up. seeing crosses live myself, they are both absolute powerhouses and were amazing to watch in person.
@@_alien_monster That's fair, I'm sure they put on a monster live show, just 2 guys on a stage, I'd feel super exposed lol I'd never heard them before and I'll definitely be checking out more of their stuff after seeing this.
They've varied their live setup over the years - at one point they played with two drummers at once. For now, they seem to enjoy their status as a duo, recoiling from the tendency for electronic acts to transition to a traditional rock setup live. But Shaun said that he's not averse to having live drums again at some point.
@@efa666 your point is completely valid though, they're definitely way different than most music I've seen growing up and even music today. drums would be cool to hear with a crosses live set too to be honest, I'm pretty sure they've done shows with drums in the past. was a Deftones fan and then discovered crosses, Shaun brings out a much different style in Chinos singing. you should definitely check them out!
Never heard of him or any of his bands lmfao.... Far ? Crosses is a pretty cheesy name as well as " look with actual crosses " it's no wonder why I never heard of him/them .. He grew up on Helmet and Smashing pumpkins 🤣, another reason why I never heard of him .
Far is a very well known band from Sacramento. Infact, quite a few bands and artists from 1998-present cite them as an influence. People have heard of Shaun Lopez and Far. Ironically, no one has ever heard of YOU. No one cites YOU as an influence.
There is no other duo that turns out music like Crosses. Shaun blew me away when I saw them in Phoenix! It's so magical to see the artist perform the art right before your eyes!

I’m very been obsessed with the sounds and production of crosses for over a year. As a guitarist, this rig rundown is a dream come true
The production is insane but not over the top on these latest releases.
Shaun is an awesome musician. I remember them playing a tiny coffee shop in Pomona as FAR. Even back then he was ahead of his time.
I toured with him when he was in Revolution Smile. Fun times.

just checked out Crosses' (†††) due to this episode. Really great stuff
They are really good, especially live!
I'm going to do the same. 🖤🖤🖤
Glad I got to see Crosses on this last tour. Their live sound was so 🔥🔥🔥
Water & Solutions by Far, Incredible album...
“When I play synth, I’m stuck here.” Bro, you need a keytar!!

What a great question!
Really great episode, would love to see more guitarists that have a more elctronic-sound orientation

it always makes my day when people mention HELMET as an influence. amazing music...keep it up Shaun and Chino. We are not getting any younger.....
Great rundown, love Crosses and Shaun's compositions are so interesting, always wondered how they were getting those sounds live so this was cool to watch!
Shaun is the only person I have heard make a guitar cry... (the years...) 🤌
Dimebag Darrell could make the Guitar cry like no other.
As a guitar & synth junkie, this was a cool rig rundown … 😊
Maj & min chords not important in SP music … hmm, okkkkkkkkkkkkk …
Damn so rad to get a peek inside Shaun's mad scientist brain - have been following him since I first discovered Far. Great rundown!

Did you ever hear the Team Sleep record?
Didn’t know Mark Wahlberg was such a good guitarist!!! 🎶🎶🎶👌👌👌
P 90s would make the cheapest guitar in the world sound like a million bucks. In my humble opinion of course.

Gosh. These guys are true musical alchemists. Especially the lap steel guitar looks like a fascinating instrument. It reminds me of the theremin.

didn't know Mark Wahlberg plays in Crosses
I love Crosses, and I love guitar that doesn't sound like guitar. This rundown was a real treat.
The Nine Inch Nails drone guitar sound is a guitar with all the strings tuned to the same note, and a slide. Which was probably created by Adrian Belew.
Velvet Underground has a few songs in that tuning too, all E. It's been around for a long time.
Any word on the cabs? Ampegs? Which models?
Saw them on Valentine's Day. They were fucking amazing!
🖤
He looks like Chino and Mark Wahlberg's long lost half brother
Puro pinche crosses Alv compa ❤❤❤❤
Good stuff.
So pumped to watch this!
I know him from The Revolution Smile lol
Phil Schecter, what a killer guitar.

“The Deftones” … 🤦🏻♂️
What about the Ampegs?
What are the monitors?
