How DEFTONES Changed Music Forever! I talk about the entire history of Deftones including: Chino Moreno, their early years and iconic albums like "Around The Fur" & "White Pony," how they transcended nu-metal and brought shoegaze into metal; the death of Chi Cheng; and their influence on newer bands like Spiritbox, Loathe and Sleep Token.

Why not do an expose on Incubus who have evolved and who changed their sound a lot more than Deftones have. Incubus are not everyone's cup of tea but have massive albums and are there any bands who really sound like them? Do Incubus have a specific sound seeing as they have changed so much through all there albums also they good friends of Deftones.

One of the craziest things I've ever seen at a show was Chino noticing a guy in the front row just not feeling the Deftones performance. He asked the guy what he'd rather hear and the guy said Morbid Angel. The band laughed and broke into a f*cking Morbid Angel song just for him! Hahahaha. What?! Who does that?! Deftones won over the entire venue immediately!

I seem to have a knack for favouriting artists least popular/ most divisive albums. Like The Cure, my favourite album of theirs is The Top which is sooo sonically scattered. But I love that!! I want things to be switched up a bit. Cannot stand hearing the same thing over and over anyway. I think it shows there's experimentation happening and like a genuine confidence in switching things up.

Deftones is one of my favorite bands of all time. what I love most about them is how dynamic their music is. they can be really heavy, really chill, and usually both at the same time. Stephen’s guitar tone is damn near perfect - incredibly lush with the right amount of crunch for the groovy riffs and the clarity for those big spacey chords. Abe’s hard hitting drums, Chi’s smooth bass lines, and of course Chino’s incredibly unique melodies and vocal delivery. Love them but everything sounds the same after their self-titled album Deftones.
And not in that good "true to form" consistent way but still with a little expressive variation like we've seen in the past. It's like one continuous single album. Sounds uninspired, like they're just going through the motions, popping them out on routine, "oh, there's another one!". Like it's a chore and you've just got to get through it so that you can do something more stimulating like sitting down.

Yes there's songs that sound similar to each other and similar to the first 4, but they did try different sonic ideas, songwriting, and experimented with different styles overall. They're my favorite band for a reason. Found them when I was maybe 13 (almost 20 years ago sheesh) and have never looked back. I'm so grateful to the band, especially Chino, because they made me realize it was okay to like whatever you want, even if some people say certain things shouldn't go together. I truly believe that if it weren't for this band, I wouldn't have anywhere near the open mind for music that I do. Not to mention they've gotten me through many good and bad times as well. In my opinion they are the greatest, and most influential "rock" band of the 90s and onward. There is no one else quite like them. But I also love seeing how they influence younger musicians. Almost anytime I hear an artist mention that they love Deftones, I know there's a greater chance they actually have some real talent. They're criminally underrated and underappreciated, but I've always loved that they've been able to find success and cultivate an extremely diverse, dedicated fan base while actually shunning the mainstream. Some people say they're pretentious and that they think of themselves as better than other bands who play similar genres. Incorrect, they're just supremely in their own lane. Thanks for making this video Punk Rock MBA. They deserve more appreciation and recognition. And you actually seem to have a good amount of understanding and appreciation for them yourself and that's awesome. I'll sometimes see other "critics" talk about the Deftones, for example fantano, but they often miss the mark. Excellent job.

They've always been the band that really put what it means to be "alternative metal" into perspective, and that's always been what I see as the best thing about them. Like if Korn drove a rift in metal with their experimentation in the 90's, Deftones basically picked up the ball and ran with it. The friend who got me into metal is a huge fan of the Deftones, but I haven't listened to them beyond the song they did with Maynard. I'll check them out after this video. Thanks for the content!

Nice vid! I’ve been a Deftones fan since the beginning. Therefore I have followed them on their musical journey. I love how every album of theirs is unique in its own way.

Deftones are the GOAT! I seen them live twice in the 2000's! My favorite Albums from them are Around the Fur, White Pony and Diamond Eyes.
It's great that they are still around making music.

Another great aspect of Chino specifically was how vocal he was about encouraging metal heads to listen to other genres. I read an interview in Circus back in the early 2000s where he gushed about Christina Aguilera.
Also you can probably do a whole video on his various side projects and guest vocal spots.

I didn't think you'd ever do it Finn!!! Great video overall. Regardless of one likes their music or not, their influence can't be denied and in my opinion the more recent music and albums hold up and are still pretty damn good. They are in their 50s after all. I started listening to them after hearing "Teething" on the Crow city of angels soundtrack. I bought Around the Fur the day it came out and every album since just the same. Adrenaline is not the heaviest album by any means in my mind but yeah, good video buddy!

Sleep Token and Loathe are two of my favorite bands of all time. I love the shoegaze sound when it’s put together with other, different sounds such as Vessel’s voice or something really heavy.

I've only been able to see them live a couple of times, but the memory of them opening a set at Ozzfest with Headup is still etched into my brain over 20 years later. Just an amazing band.

Nice to see a video like this even though you are not a huge Deftones fan. Wanted to add a few things like their first demo album "Like Linus" featured a lot of ska & punk influences (you can find 91 -92 shows) , also Linkin Park was heavily influenced by them as they were geeking out as i remember from their every early interviews. Also, after White Pony they were probably most respected metal band in their genre for a while. Even the visual stylistic change of album rollout was ahead of its time with lots of sci fi, electronical & fashion influences. Also the band put a lot of empheses on more tender & surreal emotions, this is why so many young people still resonate with their music: its has modern fantasy sentiments of youth. P.S. Abe Cunningham is a beast, my favorite drummer and i am a Tool fan. He is one of the main reasons why band is still exciting today.

Fun fact - there was this band called "far" in the 90s and the lead singer helped with and wrote most of be quiet and drive with Chino. He toured with hopesfall and coheed and cambria in 2000 or 2001 . He played acoustic and had an r2d2 shaped drum machine. He was such an awesome dude. They still produce music together sometimes
