Much the best Emma so far, the right level status of country houses, not too grand but cosy enough to feel fluid in a domestic scene. Lovely country clothes for the richer landowners and their families...and with a series, the episodes give plenty of space to tell the story. A natural flowing journey.

I was reading about the house used for Emma's country estate. Very sobering. Built in the 19th century by someone who made his trade in "Guinea." The West African slave trade, no doubt. Alot of these aristocrats made money through that trade and plantations in the Caribbean. Yes, very sobering.
The references in Mansfield Park (1995, I think) to this issue show that Austen was aware and decidedly opposed to the slave trade: the son's madness is brought on by seeing how his father has treated his slaves, and the closing credit music is by a Black composer based on the call-and-response format used in the ships (one scene includes their singing wafting up from the harbor as the carriage goes by: The reasons are explicated; their validity is questioned by the character who gets the last word on the issue, which one takes to be Jane's voice.)
The house used for Emma's country estate is Squerryes Court, as this video says. It was built in 1681-5 and had nothing to do with slavery. You've got the wrong end of the stick.

Think my favourite version of Emma, thanks to the lead actors, but the interiors in the Taylor-Joy version impressed me most.
