Benjamin Whitrow was amazing as Mr Bennet! His 'one liners' were delivered to perfection and his responses to Mrs Bennet's prattling, were so subtle in their sarcasm, they still bring a smile to my face. He deserves far more credit than he was ever given.
I whole-heartedly agree. And btw, this adaptation, among all the others in the cinematic history of the book, is my all-time favorite. This was a stellar ensemble cast.

I took a 25 yr break and rewatched it at 38, and was really surprised by how much I suddenly enjoyed the - well, let’s call them the ‘obnoxious’ characters 😂 Particularly Mrs. Bennet. She was phenomenally acted and had me laughing like i never did when i was younger. The music at the beginning of each episode still makes my heart skip a beat though 💕 🎶
I've seen Alison Steadman in many TV shows and adaptations over the years and I've enjoyed her performance in every single one. Simply, she is one of my very favourite actresses.
@@Darcyfied Do you really believe that her part was so easy to play that anybody could have done it and achieved the same level of popularity? I liked Mrs. Bennett in the 2005 adaptation but to me, she was just one of the side roles. Whereas in the 1995 adaptation, I couldn`t wait for the next Alison Steadman scene.
Best every TV nothing before it or since has portrayed the elegance of this period, Alison Steadman is always a pleasure to watch, she outshone herself in this rendering. Mind made up will watch it again tomorrow.
Actually it seems that 1995 was hot for the exquisite productions of Austen's "Pride & Prejudice", "Persuasion" and "Sense And Sensibility". Every so often a viewing of one of these is like comfort food!
I've seen a few versions of "Pride And Prejudice"...and this one is, by far, the absolute best. I truly love it...great cast, great production values...it all comes together and it works! Perfection achieved!
I absolutely LOVE watching how Mary reacts to Mr. Collins throughout the series. Her delivery of "It is often said that a friend in need, is a friend indeed" is one of my favorite lines from a show ever!
absolutely! She played the part exactly as I'd envisaged Mrs Bennet when I read the book. As did the actor playing Mr Bennet. Can't stand Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland's interpretation of the couple.
The problem is, though, that they would have been too much of a kind. She would not have counteracted his conceited, pompous, vainglorious ways- as Charlotte Lucas did. He would have been totally unbearable with someone like Mary as a wife. I shudder at the thought of having someone like him as a minister as is, already...
I agree, but story-wise, that solves the problem too quickly in the story. If Mary marries Mr Collins, it removes all the tension in the story of the Bennett's finding husbands so they won't be homeless after Mr Bennett passes away
I agree but Collins despite not being handsome wanted a kind of pretty wife and never spared a glance at Mary. In those times he could pick as he wanted regardless of his personal charms, because of his status and money
Thank you so much for uploading these. This is my favourite adaptation of P&P and it was so exciting seeing some of the actor reminisce about the show. Seeing all this now has bought back memories of how much i loved it and how i want to sit down and watch all 6 episodes :)

I'm glad they spoke about the dialogue. It reads as easy, until I tried to read it aloud. Anyone else? Reading to oneself and aloud are quite separate experiences.

I really liked Mary's character in spite of how stern she was, probably because she played the pianoforte and was not appreciated as many musicians are.
All in all, this is the best adaptation of P&P. However, it should have mentioned that the Bingleys were nouveau riche, as is done for example in the BBC's 1980 adaptation. Consequently, it misleadingly gives the impression that the Bingleys were of higher birth than the Bennets.

Jane Austen's "grammar is topsy turvy"? Maybe if you read her a lot, as I do, you stop noticing. I've always thought her English so beautiful. Our English today is much more radically flawed. But no one notices since the worst has become "accepted".
All languages change and develop. It would be very strange if we were still speaking as some people did in the regency period. I think our language is different but no better or worse.
@@Knappa22 I am (obviously) not talking about natural change or development of any kind. Just a sinister dumbing down... which has been in the making since the 80s... for specific sinister reasons.

I love the movie version with Kiera Knightly and Matthew McFayden, but nothing can replace the sheer number of hours of screen time and dialog for exploring the novel in its fullest detail with this multi-part TV series.
My all-time favorite version of P&P. My only criticism was regarding the casting of Matthew Goode as Mr. Wickham. Sorry, but he just wasn't my idea of the devastatingly handsome Wickham. Everyone else was absolutely brilliant though.
Adrian Lukis played Wickham in this adaptation. I kind of get your point though... I think it was perhaps more about his charm, though he is by no means unattractive.
Suzanna Harker was a very strange casting choice for Jane! She is a great actress, but she is also supposed to be the most beautiful of the sisters, but she just wasn’t?! I’m just being honest. Jennifer Ehle was far more beautiful, and it must have annoyed her having all those lines about how she would never be as beautiful as her sister……. It bugged me at the time and it bugs me now
Everybody raves about Firth as Darcy, but he was too old. The first actors to come to my mind for the part would have been Englishman Dominic West or Canadian Yannick Bisson.
I can understand not liking a particular actor in a role (although I personally love Firth as Darcy) but he was hardly too old for the part. Darcy's exact age was never given in the book, but can be estimated at 33-34ish as his sister is 'more than 16 years' his junior and she is 16 by the time Elizabeth meets her in the book.
