Toss up between this and the Gazebo scene for me... They were SO in love💖 I listened to a 2005 chat between Christopher and Julie and he said that the laedler was the scene " we realised we were in love" ... Did he mean the Captain and Maria or..??? . I like to think it was a hidden message or Freudian slip... or even an admittance ! 💖He has admitted he had a huge crush on Julie, and I think somewhere she said the same. Sigh...
She's scheming already - I've gotta get her away from him, now! And later when Uncle Max insists Maria comes to the dinner table he hisses to Elsa- this is business! 😁 If I had to choose, I think maybe Max is at the top in this movie. He plays his role absolutely PERFECTLY.
He's so light on his feet. This is such a beautiful moment in movie history, there is more romance in this scene then in all the modern chick flicks put together. This will forever be one of my favourite movies, but this is by far my favourite scene.
My favorite is still the scene with the pink lemonade, where the children are devastated that Maria ran away and the captain is working hard at avoiding his own feelings by deflecting every mention of her to this funny-looking beverage: "not too sweet, not too sour." But this one is right up there! The moment where they lock eyes and then step back in shock as the Landler ends - they could have burned the house down with those sparks.
@@juliasmucker I agree, that scene is brilliant, because as he's trying to deflect his feelings, there is still hurt and confusion there even though he's not shouting it to the world, its obvious how he feels. Behind the scenes fact: the boy that played Kurt (Duane Chase) could actually dance the landler, even though in the movie they make it look like he can't. The director, Robert Wise actually let Duane and Julie Andrews dance the whole thing through once. 😋
@musicbabylove1 True. But you don't hear about him as much as some of the other iconic heartthrobs. That's what I was trying to say. Definitely a heartthrob.
He has a certain look...came from an extremely upper class family in Montreal...uncle was one of Canada's prime ministers. Speaks french well....a certain type
I love this scene so much. At the beginning of the dance, it’s purely for fun and their smiles are full of excitement and joy. As the dance continues, they get more serious and look into each other’s eyes more. This is the most physical contact they have had since they met, and they both begin to realize that maybe the attraction is mutual. When she pulls away from him once they stop, he looks at her with a confused and longing look and she simply stares back, not knowing what to say. When they notice she is blushing heavily, she tries to excuse it away, but the Captain already knows that he affects her. His smile when he realizes makes my heart skip a beat.
1:24 I never noticed this before, but this moment is SO MUCH. As he's turned away and moving away his face begins to fall and he looks WORRIED and _SAD_ for a moment as he reaches back to find her hand, worried it won't be there. Then right as he finds her hand, he smiles like he's trying to hide his surprise, and is confident again. for her in the beginning, As he's turned away, she's conflicted/curious about reaching out to him, slowly moving her hand forward to meet him, but she's watching his face. and once their hands touch, she takes on a neutral mask/straight face, trying not to meet his eyes. And then their eyes lock and it's all over.
I rewatched this for the first time as an adult - this whole scene went over my head as a kid. It's pretty impressive storytelling - pretty big development for three characters in under three minutes with almost no words.
My mother and I tried to see Sound of Music so many times, but it was always sold out. One day my mother surprised me at school (5th grade) and took me out early and we saw the movie in the middle of the week. What a kind mother she was to me and made me feel so special.
There's a magnetism between the vulnerability of her sweet and pleading eyes and the erotic energy in the way he stares at her, which is almost agressive. It's the beauty and the beast.
I watch this movie every Easter and this year it hit me hard: the Captain comes outside to see Maria teaching his son to dance this traditional folk dance, right? A dance surely his wife would’ve been teaching their children had she been alive. I can’t imagine how that must have made his heart feel. It’s no wonder he wanted to jump right in and experience that kind of intimacy again. The way he dances with Maria really goes to show how much he’s opened his heart to love and it just makes me want to cry happily 💖
Oh yes, that's a very intimate moment. A good friend of mine and her boyfriend helped me once with preparing a dinner. I didn't know him very well or long, but I did know that his mother passed away when he was young. I had to whip some cream and I asked him if he wanted to do it. He said that he would, but that he didn't know how. I taught him. He said: my mother had tried to learn me once (or something like that). I immediately realized that it must be a very special, intimate moment to him, and he let me in in that pain/remembrance. Wow.
So romantic. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plumber had a special kind of on-screen magic. I love how vulnerable Maria looks at the end of the song, when she realizes how dancing with him made her feel and she becomes flustered. Her eyes are so sparkly.
The romance sends shivers down my spine when he walks out and sees her and gets that smirk on his face...like he’s thinking “now watch me get the woman I love” 😍
i don't think hde was thinking of her in loving terms initially; he just wanted to show off. It's not until they get really face to face in the end of the dance that he realizes how much he wants her.
I love this scene, it's very romantic. When I discovered this movie, I viewed the Baroness as some sort of villainess, but as I grow older, I feel sorry that she had to catch the exact moment where her man falls in love with someone else...
I love how naturally the dance between them begins. His offer doesn’t really come out of nowhere; it’s based on a simple desire to show his son the proper way to do the dance.
@@hollyliedtke202 I meant that I did not read it in other comments, so I surprised that nobody shared this feeling. I thought that I understood this scene a bit differently from others. But now, I think, would be better, if I wrote it in another way, not like "I am the only one ..."
Maria starts dancing with Kurt as a governess, she teaches him practically. With the Captain she cannot hide behind the masque of the teacher, she is not anymore a trainee nun, and I think she gets confused, what is her role NOW ? what is she doing there dancing with her employer, the distinguished naval officer dressed in his formal suit and father of the children she takes care of? She is definitely in awe of him! All her life she has learned to respect and revere and offer. She looks at him solemnly, shyly, she does not know how to behave, he surely honours her by offering his hand to dance with her. She surely admires him but now the roles are completely different. He is a man and she is a woman, should she look around or at him but she cannot look at him as she feels weirdly. She tries decently to act her role in the dance BUT the emotions start to blow her heart and mind as the dance changes style from distant and theatrical to a growing attachment, proximity and intimacy. The distance between them as they dance in the beginning favors her in her effort to hide her confusion but in the middle of the dance it gets more and more difficult for her. The Captain, the employer, the father is such A MAN, he looks at her sooo calmly, peacefully, decently. He is focused on her as a true dance partner should be. When the dance changes style from thetrical to intimate and face-to-face and eyes-to-eyes, at first the Captain offers her his hand, she grasps it understanding the following growing closeness and feeling bewildered, whereas he smiles slightly, yes he is building a sentimental interaction and he is succeeding, she responds. At the final scene of the dance, because of the intimate eye contact, the closeness of the bodies, the moonlight, her mind just blows off! and gets red, she now gets the hint that he clicks her sexually, as a man. She is in love with him. Now she feels wonder, what is going on? she needs time to realize her emotions. And get paralyzed, she cannot dance anymore, She covers her cheeks when Louisa tells her that she is red, she apologizes that she is not accustomed to dancing, again she tries to cover things up and hide. He looks at her in wonder, why did she stop, did he make some mistake? he tries to understand...and when she says that she is not used to dancing, then he finally understands, she has fallen for him!! When i was young, i thought this was the most romantic scene- i've only watched a handful of movies by then. Decades later (and a considerable amount of films later) my opinion remains. ❤
1:24 Will his hand be there? Will she touch my hand? Both unsure but both there when the time came. Notice their expression just before and after. Perfect direction.
One of the most romantic scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie, and they barely say a word. Take note, modern movies, this is how it’s done. Actions speak louder than words do.
To me the mastery in this scene is that significant moments (like the captain taking over the dance and their eyes connecting) happens in time with the way in which the music changes.
I'm 38 and this movie has always been and always will be my favorite. When I was little, my grandmother used to put it on for me every time I came over. This was when it was on VHS and you had to put the second tape in right after she goes back to the Abby. I know every word. This movie started my love of musicals and made me fall in love with romantic movies. It's amazing that a movie made 20 years before I was born can have such a huge effect on me. This is my all time favorite scene, along with the garden scene where he tells her that he missed her. Lord, they don't make movies like this anymore.
I met Julie Andrews in 1987 at the Fox Theatre, after her show, and waited in a long line,in the parking lot.I welcomed her to St.Louis, and expressed to her that I thought she had guts, and I like people who have guts. While expressing this to her,I shook her hand and she smiled.Julie Andrews IS One Special Human Being♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Rest in sweet peace Christopher Plummer. Your charm, grace and machismo is unparalleled. Your looks are perfect. You will so be missed. Thank you for sharing all those gifts that have lasted a lifetime. 😭
I think of all the scenes in The Sound of Music, this one is indeed, the most romantic. It is because Maria is finally beginning to face her growing feelings for the Captain and so is the Captain.
I was 9 when this came out. It was a really big deal to see this in a huge theatre. I absolutely got a crush on Christopher Plummer at this particular scene, and had it ever since. A little piece of my heart broke today when I heard the news.
This movie shows us how beautiful humankind can be, with this scene. And it also shows us our darker side, with the anschluss plot. Humanity is the greyest species out there, for we are capable of both great evil and great beauty.
This is a lovely scene!! Then in the scene after the children leave he just talks about the weather....clearly trying to change the subject with his girlfriend. This movie/musical if by far one of the best!!!
Christopher Plummer was so handsome in that film. His role as a captain was so appropriate for him to play. Julie Andrews also so talented she can sing, she can dance, very impressive indeed!
The entrance of the Baroness is what we call in India, "Kabab meh haddi" which means "Bone in the lamb chop", which translates to Three's a crowd, or One too many.
@@puuxexil and the scene also echoes Hammerstein's lyrics in that song, which always thought foretelling of the love story...the Capt. himself is the lonely goatherd, high on a hill...
Everything about this scene is so beautiful and romantic. The music, the dance, the Captain looking ever so dashing, Julie looking radiant in that flowy dress... my heart! I love this movie so much!
When they did the stage version, the real Maria von Trapp herself was consulted by the producers as regards the Landler scene. My favorite scene in the whole movie.
@@gemoftheocean i don't think the real Maria had a story anything like this. I think they married for convenience from what I understand. Well it makes good cinema anyway
Goodness, the crush i had on Christopher Plummer… 50 some years later, watching this, i still feel the enchantment of this dance. Thank you so much for uploading.
May God have mercy on Christopher Plummer's soul. He was my idol, from childhood right up to today. He brought magic into a little girl's life when this film came out and helped her believe in dashing knights in shining armour, fairytales and happy ever afters. For that I am forever in his debt. Sleep with angels 'Captain Von Trapp'.
I would absolutely love to do this dance with my bride at our wedding reception (including me in a fancy formal tail coat tux like captian von trap(Christopher Plummer) is wearing. It just looks so dapper and smooth!) As soon as i find myself a bride lol! Single and praying for one! 😎👍❤️🙏
The dance starts off delightfully innocent and charming, but then their eyes meet and an entirely new conversation begins. The captain does not hide his feelings. Maria is amazed by hers.
Christopher Plummer was so elegant in this movie. Authoritarian and elegant. Back in the day when men were REAL men. And Julie Andrews is always beautiful, but in this particular role, she shines like a diamond! One of my favorite movies!
I always thought that this scene showed true love, I am watching the 20/20 the Sound of Music The Untold Story and both Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer admit, the feelings were there and mutual but the time was just not right. Both were having marriage problems but Christopher said Julie had her daughter with her.
For me, this is the most romantic scene in any movie I've ever watched.

After 30 years of seeing this movie I just realized the song they dance to is a graceful version of the lonely goatherd
Besides the swoon, my favorite part is Maria just turning it out. Even flustered. I love this scene so much.
I am sooo going to dance this on my wedding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):):):):):)
Why wait for your wedding? Do it now!
Haha I can do Maria's part but unfortunately I can't find anyone to do Georg's part:(
Me too 😊
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else pull off this haircut. Julie Andrews is for sure a rare beauty 😭😭
She's still just as beautiful today too. A true timeless beauty
Sad to hear that Christopher Plummer has passed away just a few hours ago. Thank you, Chris for giving us great moments in life. RIP.
*sighs dreamily* I love this part😊😍👍
RIP Christopher Plummer, the sound of music is one of my most memorable childhood movies and his presence on screen was something else
What I love about this is the eyes. the way they looked at each other speaks louder than the declaration of words.
Rest in sweet peace Christopher Plummer. Your charm, grace and machismo is unparalleled. Your looks are perfect. You will so be missed. Thank you for sharing all those gifts that have lasted a lifetime. 😭
The core memory of this scene is 1:50 where the frame gets all fluffy and soft. Goodness this scene is so beautiful
I think of all the scenes in The Sound of Music, this one is indeed, the most romantic. It is because Maria is finally beginning to face her growing feelings for the Captain and so is the Captain.
Who wouldn’t die to dance with the Captain
I was 9 when this came out. It was a really big deal to see this in a huge theatre. I absolutely got a crush on Christopher Plummer at this particular scene, and had it ever since. A little piece of my heart broke today when I heard the news.
Who wouldn't want to dance with Julie Andrews
Rip to a legend Christopher Plummer you will be greatly missed and to all the cast of sound of music for making part of my childhood😊🤗
When she backs away from him…his face is just so sad it’s heart-wrenching
The entrance of the Baroness is what we call in India, "Kabab meh haddi" which means
"Bone in the lamb chop", which translates to
Three's a crowd, or One too many.
🤣
😂😂
LOL!!
😂😂😂👍
Oh! Good to know 🤣
It's the same tune as Lonely Goatherd in 3/4 timing.
I never made the connection until I saw your comment, and now I can't unhear it! Thank you for sharing this incredible fact!
I knew it sounded so familiar
@@theresanichole5224 that's very kind of you. I can't take credit... credit to Rodgers for sneaking it in and making it work.
@@puuxexil and the scene also echoes Hammerstein's lyrics in that song, which always thought foretelling of the love story...the Capt. himself is the lonely goatherd, high on a hill...
I had the soundtrack memorized as a kid and I always made that connection myself.
This is a movie that will never grow old.
Everything about this scene is so beautiful and romantic. The music, the dance, the Captain looking ever so dashing, Julie looking radiant in that flowy dress... my heart! I love this movie so much!
Oohh you can feel the heat between them in this scene ❤
Christopher you will never be forgotten!
Rest in peace in heaven!
Rest in peace you beautiful man.
That's the sweetest thing I've seen in years
Apparently the makers of the film really did research the Laendler dance for this scene and incorporated it into the choreography.
When they did the stage version, the real Maria von Trapp herself was consulted by the producers as regards the Landler scene. My favorite scene in the whole movie.
@@gemoftheocean i don't think the real Maria had a story anything like this. I think they married for convenience from what I understand. Well it makes good cinema anyway
all dancing is lovemaking. this scene embodies that notion...
The most beautiful scene ever filmed
This is an example of love them making love through dance..
The closeness...
The eye contact.
So beautiful
Its the way she looks at him, its so innocent and dreamy
The most romantic scene in any movie, ever.
Maria is like “holy fuck I love you” and Von Trapp is like “holy fuck I love you”
Goodness, the crush i had on Christopher Plummer… 50 some years later, watching this, i still feel the enchantment of this dance.
Amen.
This is my favorite part of this movie! The dance is so beautiful
Most romantic and beautiful scene in any film ...❤️
Christopher Plummer was so elegant in this movie. Authoritarian and elegant. Back in the day when men were REAL men. And Julie Andrews is always beautiful, but in this particular role, she shines like a diamond! One of my favorite movies!
I love my mom so much for raising me on good movies like this one
I find myself smiling through the whole scene. We need more positive and wholesomeness like this.
BEST SCENE OF ANY MOVIE EVER MADE....PERIOD❤
Elegante is an attitude. And Christopher Plummer had it. Wonderful scene.
This is one of my favorite moments in Sound of Music. So beautiful and romantic
The chemistry! RIP Christopher Plummer 💔
" I don't remember anymore " love it❤
“What a lovely couple you’d make” gets me every time 😂
Want us back in theaters Hollywood? Give us more of This. But, we’re not holding our breath.
Christopher Plummer Dec 13, 1929 - Feb 5th 2021 One of the greatest Canadian actors !
Such a great movie and impeccable performances!!Miss all the cast!!❤❤
I love this scene and the one in the gazebo. so romantic. What a great movie. Its timeless ✨
The way he adjusts his gloves getting ready to dance with her I just find that to be so simple and romantic ❤❤❤❤
