A great film with beautiful actresses and scenery. A historical love story. Catherine Deneuve and Ava Gardner are the most beautiful actress of the time. James Mason and Omar Sharif are my favorite actors. I have watched this film many times, love it every time. A classic.
And yet it seems to have disappeared; I (I'll be 63 soon [2023]) have never really heard of it, except via a Mireille Mathieu song (and the associated video). There must be so many excellent films that have for one reason or another almost disappeared. ("Hopscotch" is another one - great cast, fun story.)

Кинотеатр Урал в Челябинске. Огромный зал, широкий экран. Фильм призёр не помню уже какого фестиваля. А мне всего-то лет семнадцать. Ну такой тягомотиной он мне запомнился. Наверное я до него не созрел тогда. Еле высидел две серии этого шедевра. И было это в 73 примерно году, прошлого века.
совпадает воспоминание о просмотре фильма нашумевшего и недоумении, а что шумят про него и пишут?! Взрослые люди, сытые и нарядные, ходят и страдают, никак договориться не могут, и всё это монотонно перемалывают сдвоенный сеанс в кинозале! Подростку было не понять, тем фильм и запомнился. Пожалуй, попробую заново глянуть...

In this movie, Catherine Deneuve is 24 and plays a 17-year old, which was the scandal in 1889 that led to the insanity of the crownprince, played by Omar Sharif who was 36 when the film was shot.
Eva Gardner was without question and without any comparison as the greatest beauty. Though she was of my parents generation, I felt she must have been quite a unique woman, ahead of her time knowing who she was and not the frills of make believe Hollywood. I was impressed that her home became Spain, years later. I can not even see Deneuve in the same unique beauty that Eva Gardner poised so naturally and earthly. 🌹
Ava Gardner est la plus belle femme du monde, et Deneuve parait tellement fade et mièvre à côté, alors qu'elle est très jeune et Ava a déjà plus de 50 ans dans ce film !! C'est en mettant les autres "beautés" à côté d'elle qu'on prend encore plus conscience de l'exceptionnelle beauté d'Ava.. .Si les dieux grecs devaient choisir une humaine pour incarner Aphrodite, la déesse de la Beauté, ils ne pourraient choisir aucune autre qu'Ava. De même si Victor Hugo avait pu choisir une actrice pour incarner Esmeralda, son héroine de Notre Dame de Paris, il n'aurait pu choisir que Gina Lollobrigida, une beauté exceptionnelle aussi....des beautés parfaites et naturelles. Ava et Gina sont les deux plus belles femmes du cinéma.

Questo film è una perla, dal cast stellare alla colonna sonora, tutto è curato nel minimo dettaglio. Sharif è un affascinante Rodolfo, la meravigliosa Deneuve è la sua giovane amante, Mason è l'altero imperatore d'Austria e Ava Gardner è perfetta nel ruolo dell' imperatrice Elisabetta, splendida, dolce e regale 🌹
I don't know why people say that Catherine Deneuve was miscast she was utterly brilliant and believable as doomed lover countess Marie Vetsera! She also shared a strong chemistry with Omar Shariff!!! The movie itself was so poignant and sentimental, masterfully directed by Terence Young with breathtaking costumes and art design!!! Too bad the Academy did not give a slightest oscar nom!!! Great supporting cast including Ava Gardner as princess Elisabeth of Austria and James Mason as prince Franz-Joseph!!!! An unforgettable movie experience!!!!

Rudolph's wife was Princess Stephanie of Belgium who was a rather dull young woman. Marie was young and pretty but not the great love of Rudolph's life. There is no possibility that she killed him because she was killed first. @@gnsernest
What was sad is that the authorities blamed the young Baroness (she was only 16) for the crown prince's death. They claimed that she shot him and then herself. They wouldn't allow her mother to see her and the poor girl was buried in an unmarked grave. The people who first found the bodies later said that the girl was already in full rigor so that meant she had been dead for 6-7 hours. But the prince's body was still warm. So I imagine that he probably wasn't really planning on killing himself except that the thought of the scandal and outrage of what he had done (if he had lived) was why he eventually committed suicide. My sympathies are for the unfortunate baroness and her family. 😔

He definitely was planning on killing himself. He had been suicidal for a long time at this point. But it's still a shame he took that young girl with him, she just fell in love and let him convince her to die as well

I saw this film about 1973 on TV and it was amazing. I am so frustrated because I have never been able to find it on DVD anywhere in region one and it’s driving me bonkers. Why is this movie so hard to find and DVD/Blu-ray players?!

I have always been fascinated by the possibilities of the writer's interpretation of reality. The story of one of the insane crown princes who were born into the Habsburg family with centuries-old closely related marriages. This Rudolph suggested double suicide for one of his mistresses. I don't believe in great love. He spent the evening before a possible suicide with her. And then he went to Mayerling, where, according to many, he killed his other very young mistress Maria Vechera and himself. Hugo also had a talent for ennobling reality. Only a true genius, for example, could create a tale of Quasimodo's love for Esmeralda from the story of necrophilia.
Rudolph was very ill with syphilis at the time of the murder-suicide, and was also riddled with guilt that he had infected his young wife with the terrible disease, not only ensuring her death, but making her infertile. That much is fact. The rest really can’t be proven definitively, including whether or not Rudolph asked another mistress to commit suicide with him. Since he was still alive, but unconscious and dying when they were found, and Vetsera was dead with rigor mortise already set in, the police recorded it as a murder-suicide, with Rudolph leaving a suicide note for his wife and Vetsera leaving letters for her mother and other relatives proving that she wanted to die with Rudolph.

Кинотеатр Урал в Челябинске. Огромный зал, широкий экран. Фильм призёр не помню уже какого фестиваля. А мне всего-то лет семнадцать. Ну такой тягомотиной он мне запомнился. Наверное я до него не созрел тогда. Еле высидел две серии этого шедевра. И было это в 73 примерно году, прошлого века.
совпадает воспоминание о просмотре фильма нашумевшего и недоумении, а что шумят про него и пишут?! Взрослые люди, сытые и нарядные, ходят и страдают, никак договориться не могут, и всё это монотонно перемалывают сдвоенный сеанс в кинозале! Подростку было не понять, тем фильм и запомнился. Пожалуй, попробую заново глянуть...

Though she was of my parents generation, I felt she must have been quite a unique woman, ahead of her time knowing who she was and not the frills of make believe Hollywood. I was impressed that her home became Spain, years later. I can not even see Deneuve in the same unique beauty that Eva Gardner poised so naturally and earthly. 🌹

I don't know why people say that Catherine Deneuve was miscast she was utterly brilliant and believable as doomed lover countess Marie Vetsera! She also shared a strong chemistry with Omar Shariff!!! The movie itself was so poignant and sentimental, masterfully directed by Terence Young with breathtaking costumes and art design!!! Too bad the Academy did not give a slightest oscar nom!!! Great supporting cast including Ava Gardner as princess Elisabeth of Austria and James Mason as prince Franz-Joseph!!!! An unforgettable movie experience!!!!

Rudolph's wife was Princess Stephanie of Belgium who was a rather dull young woman. Marie was young and pretty but not the great love of Rudolph's life. There is no possibility that she killed him because she was killed first. @@gnsernest

What was sad is that the authorities blamed the young Baroness (she was only 16) for
the crown prince's death. They claimed that she shot him and then herself. They wouldn't allow her mother to see her and the poor girl was buried in an unmarked grave. The people who first found the bodies later said that the girl was already in full rigor so that meant she had been dead for 6-7 hours. But the prince's body was still warm.
So I imagine that he probably wasn't really planning on killing himself except that the thought of the scandal and outrage of what he had done (if he had lived) was why he eventually committed suicide. My sympathies are for the unfortunate baroness and her family. 😔
I thought they had both been murdered for political reasons...

He definitely was planning on killing himself. He had been suicidal for a long time at this point. But it's still a shame he took that young girl with him, she just fell in love and let him convince her to die as well

I know of the film of course but have not seen it or I would have remembered this. Must make a point of watching it next time it's on TV. I love historical dramas and true stories.
I saw this film about 1973 on TV and it was amazing. I am so frustrated because I have never been able to find it on DVD anywhere in region one and it’s driving me bonkers. Why is this movie so hard to find and DVD/Blu-ray players?!
It omits the most important fact:
why the lovers were so start crossed and destined for doom.

Rudolph was very ill with syphilis at the time of the murder-suicide, and was also riddled with guilt that he had infected his young wife with the terrible disease, not only ensuring her death, but making her infertile. That much is fact. The rest really can’t be proven definitively, including whether or not Rudolph asked another mistress to commit suicide with him. Since he was still alive, but unconscious and dying when they were found, and Vetsera was dead with rigor mortise already set in, the police recorded it as a murder-suicide, with Rudolph leaving a suicide note for his wife and Vetsera leaving letters for her mother and other relatives proving that she wanted to die with Rudolph.
The unfortunate couple discovered ....that they had the same philandering father....
