I read how the kids and Julie actually spent 3 months learning how to do this scene; marionette puppets, singing & everything❣️
I remember Julie Andrews in interview it was an really difficult scene to do.
I am glad she did it and i am glad they left it in its amazing
Really? I thought that they were shooting the kids with the puppet rods from below then cutting the scene and shooting the puppets moved by pro puppeteers offscreen.

Just realizing how the story of the lonely goatherd mirrors the movie’s plot. The lonely goatherd (a lonely man - Captain Von Trapp) with his goat herd (his children) build a new family with a girl (Maria) who responded to his song (request for a new governess), with the girl’s mother (Reverend Mother) encouraging the girl to follow her heart

This scene is the kind that could so easily have been cut from the final movie. I'm glad they left it in. It's pure charm.
Indeed, this is the kind of scene that doesn't necessarily move the story forward. But showing the characters just spending time with each other (putting on a puppet show, in this instance) draws us the audience into their world and allows us to care about them all the more when the story moves forward.

1:28 is my fav part because of how Julie laughs at herself because she sings the first line so goofy. It’s adorable and I replay it too much.

I agree with you. The worse part (for me) was when I heard she can’t sing again due to voice probs/surgery. But it is so good to have her voice live on in this film and Mary Poppins and many other films she’s been in.

The scene, puppets, children, Maria, are absolutely adorable. But the song is musically a masterpiece! Full of detail, layers, and punctuation -and performed just perfectly!

Innocence???? All I saw was mothers wishing their daughters would put out and mate with their male mates and create those little kid puppets. Well I guess it's natural so in a sense it is innocent. Just came off kinda sexual. But it's life. Reproduction is life. I'm gonna go be innocent. Later!

As a child I was captivated by this song - and still today it brings such warmth and joy.
I think it’s really amazing that they managed to control so many marionettes at the same time without tangling the strings. That couldn’t have been easy to do

I was 8 in 1965 in Luton when my Nan took me to see The Sound Of Music. I was so enthralled I begged to be taken back a week later and my grandad got roped in, best times.
My grandma introduced me to this movie in the mid 90s. Still one of my favorite musical films
I am from Austria and we literally grew up watching puppets like these on TV or even live. Puppet theaters were really popular, especially Kasperl 😍 sadly this tradition is going away 😔
I feel that there's a puppet revival happening, in the UK at least. I've noticed there's more and more puppetry now than there was, say 10 years ago. Let's hope we keep the momentum going! ❤

@@charlottereadcreativewell the UK also had Gerry Anderson who was behind a lot of marionette puppet tv-shows such as Stingray, Terrahawks and Thunderbirds just to me soon a few of his sci-fi series. Seriously you can’t find anything like that anymore. Nowadays kids are served animated series that are mass produced and it just doesn’t compare to the love and care that probably went into these types of shows
This cuts off before they exit the stage. But when Julie steps down she is out of breath and says Whew! This was a real reaction and kept in by Robert Wise.😊

The Sound Of Music is one of the best family movies of all time
OMG!!! We who were alive back then learned from this. The entire score taught us all the basics. This cast knocked it out of the park for all of eternity!! Especially noticeable here is little Angela belting out octaves like a true Austrian. Just incredible how Julie led this team!

Still ranks among the greatest films ever made, in my opinion.
People today don’t realize that at the time this film was made Eleanor Parker (the Baroness) was the most famous to filmgoers. The other performers were mostly known for their stage work. She was cast not only for her talent but her name recognition. She was a very talented performer, several Oscar nominations, played many different roles, but sadly is most remember for her The Sound of Music. But I suppose not the worst thing to be remembered for! She does have the best lines!

Baroness Schroeder: "My dear, is there anything you can't do?"
Maria: "Well, I'm not sure I'll make a very good nun."
Baroness: "If you have any problems, I'll be happy to help you."
She held a certain class and elegance- so beautiful!
If you'd like to see a musical in which Eleanor Parker plays the main character, try *Interrupted Melody* (1955).
And really very humble. Once she realized that Maria and the Captain loved each other she gracefully packed her little bags and left.
It was my favorite song and scene as a kid and it's still is.

2:15 that "phew" from julie Andrews is well deserved on two levels: one, being Maria, who almost never directed a show before, when the directing is taking a toll on her, and Julie Herself needing a breath after that goddamn coloratura bit, which goes unnoticed in most productions.
It hits different right Now rest in peace Christopher Plummer, he was a a phenomenal actor! I can't imagine how the cast of " The sound of music" must be feeling, they were such a family!

I remember this beautiful film when my mom carried me to see it..Iwas 6 years old...I love all the actors and actresses...
This scene was -probably- definitely a nightmare to set up and shoot.
I heard that they had the kids and Julie just moving the puppet handles around and singing. They had professional puppeteers manipulating the actual puppets for the screen.
That's why you only see the kids singing and doing minimal puppet work.

FAVORITE SONG IN THE WHOLE MOVIE.
The puppets move so well and funny that one wonders whether i was done by others, or how they could train the children that well? Apart from that, the play has a symbolic meaning: In its playful , funny ease, it loosens up the captains frozen sorrow, helping him get over it., and helps the inexperienced Maria to be confident about love.Just a thought.

I m 20 years old and I saw this movie for like 4 or 5 times. Still can't get tired of it. Never seen something that raises to this kind of perfection. The music is extremely beautiful, the places where this movie was filmed matches the atmosphere, and the actors are brilliant. Julie Andrews is one of my favourites. The Lonely goatherd is sublime on many levels. The Sound of Music was a great achievement and deserve all the love. It was already not recent when I discovered as a kid in the 70's. Happy to see it still attract new generations.

All scenes are my favourites, but this clearly is my most favourite. My heart feels stout watching it while reminiscing my childhood.
I cant imagine any other singer in this role. Julie Andrews is, in my opinion, the greatest female singer of all time. Her smile, wholesomeness and personality all adds to her aura. I'm not a celebrity worshipper, but I'll be broken once she passes.
