ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

Gosh, as much as I love Bill Lee’s rendition that’s used in the film, there’s just something so lovely and sincere about Christopher’s somewhat shaky, imperfect cadence. Really makes me weep. This album is what we’ve all been waiting for, truly 😭. And Irwin Kostal was a gift.
exactly. His honest vocals actually match what is happening in the scene.
Agreed!
I feel the same way!
I feel you get more emotion from Plummer’s voice. Lee has plenty of emotion, but Plummer has the advantage of being IN the scene and being able to feel “his” children and their love around him.
I’ve been listening to this version (and his version of “Something Good”) over and over the past few days. Can’t get enough of it 🥰
Totally Agree about the… humanity? Rawness? Of Plummer’s voice. The Captain hasn’t sung in quite a while, of course he’d be somewhat nervous and rusty 😄 but that just ADDS to the charm of it all. That earnest attempt and uncertainty underpin the simplicity of the music- giving us this beautifully heartfelt scene 😊 Goodness I did not intend to make a mini analysis but this scene is just Too Good 🥺♥️
Something about Plummer’s version truly delivers. he plays it as written; a man unsure of himself who hasn’t sang or performed since losing his wife. A man reluctant to show the slightest vulnerability to anyone in that room who, swept up in emotions of love both old and new, plays his favorite piece. Christine’s Plummer’s rendition is superior. A true actor and performer RIP
She's an entertainer for sure.
not him singing, though
@@laurieocathail2441 In this video, it is him singing. Just not in the movie.
His name isn't Christine! He's a man and his name is Christopher!!!
@@SMcCaskill Thank you, I was just about to say the same thing!!
His rendition may not have been perfect, but it was authentic. He made the viewers feel as if he was just singing a folk song to entertain his family in an evening spent with friends. I love it...
It's a great vocal-as-performance that I feel like is actually more common now than the more polished studio musicals made in Sound of Music's days. Both approaches have their pros and cons (there are plenty of actors in modern musicals who probably should've been either dubbed or recast with an actual singer) but when somebody can sing this well and it adds this much to the emotion of the moment, it's hard to understand why you wouldn't use this.
@@sarahreynolds1870I’m more of a fan of the older movie musicals than I am of modern ones
@@sarahreynolds1870Chris himself did not feel confident about his singing and how it will match up with that of Julie’s (he said how he was trembling so bad when they were recording the singings that Julie had to hold his hands) so Robert Weiss decided to find someone to dub
I prefer his performance more than Bill Lee They should have used his voice in.the movie
But his version IS perfect!!!❤❤❤
Can we get the movie with Christopher Plummer’s vocals for the 60th anniversary
not unless you're financing it, honey! you people really live in a fantasy land
yes let's make that happen pls
@@Diana.Danieli hopefully no studio is dumb enough to waste investor money on a project like that
@@Marcel_Audubon That’s like a 30 minutes job, and I’m being generous because.
@@fenrislegacy ain't gonna happen, sweetie
This sounds less like a musical number and more like a dad singing to his kids on a whim.
He truly was a great actor.
This rendition makes his bashful shrug at the end so much more meaningful. It would be lovely to get a version of the film with his voice in streaming platforms.
I would love that so much too❤
I've always loved that face he makes at the end when looking at Maria. It's saying, hey I'm no Julie Andrews, but I did my best. 😊
Love this part..
His singing is so real and slightly vulnerable- a fitting juxtaposition of his rigid military demeanor and his love for his children, Maria, and his country ❤️
I had no idea what to expect. Having grown up with this film and the film version. Christopher, although not perfect, is absolutely beautiful. Shame this wasn’t used in the film.
I’ve seen the movie 10 times! And I couldn’t agree more
I might agree, except with the other voices in the film being so strong and polished, his would have stuck out like a sore thumb no matter how sincere or emotional.
It greatly annoyed Chris that they dubbed his singing voice. He would have been so proud to have it shared today.
If you had been around in 1965, then you would have understood the reason why Plummer's version could not have been used. People in those days wanted their movie musicals to be perfect. If they had used Plummer's demo version---which I love---the critics would have had a field day blasting the filmmakers. You can just imagine a review stating, ". . .at the very least the filmmakers could have used actors who can sing; this is a disgrace". Hollywood tried making a musical in which the actors used their own untrained voices. It was Burt Reynolds in "At Long Last Love" and it was a total fiasco. Unless you were Judy Garland or Frank Sinatra, you were going to get dubbed.
I'm so confused by all these comments, this is the rendition I grew up with! My mom taped the movie off TV. I always loved his shakiness and sincerity.
His voice comforts me in a way I’ve never expected.
Me too !!! 😊
Me too
This is way better than the dubbed version. Goosebumps!
I agree. It's sincere, perfectly imperfect.
Absolutely..
no
Do we start the campaign for a 4k blu-ray with 'Optional Alternative Audio Track featuring original vocals by Christopher Plummer' like... now?!
YES
60th anniversary soon. 🤞
I want that!
Yes!!!! It's wonderful xx😊
Send me the link to the petition.
Edit: I also want 4K HDR of the entire Rogers and Hammerstein Collection.
I love this so much better than the og, it's much more raw and sincere! And Charmain Carr sounds a lot better in this version as well.
It’ll take me some time for me to agree with you! But may they both rest in peace
The way his voice blends with Charmy's is heartstoppingly beautiful.
Casting did an amazing job of finding a singer whose voice sounded like just a stronger and more polished version of Plummer's own. Sometimes dubbing is so awkwardly obvious (looking at you, My Fair Lady) but hearing these original tracks makes it clear how much effort they put into finding just the right voice.
I didn't even know he was dubbed, they did a really good job. As opposed to My Fair Lady 😂
This version makes more sense, as he says he hasn’t sung in a long time, but either version is still beautiful
I apologize for being your 70th like.
Christopher Plummer was so amazingly handsome in the sound of music. Rest in peace Christopher Plummer.🎉🎉
One of the reasons why I keep watching the film!
they should have left the original vocals. He sings in a very touching way!!
Anyone who heard Plummer in his Tony-winning performance in CYRANO knows the man can sing!
Or An American Tail
Christopher Plummer is Canadian so it's gotta be "A Canadian Tail" !!! (hahaha) 😀 Love this version !!! WOW
@@ginakay2529 Very funny
What a great performance.
This is magical. I think Christopher's rendition has its own uniqueness to me, it feels like a father sang a lullaby to his 7 kids and sounds more sincere than Bill Lee's rendition
Three years ago today Christopher Plummer left us. We truly will never see his like again, but how lucky we are to have witnessed performances like this. Rest in peace Captain. 🫡
Yes a sad day! It is comforting to hear him singing, it’s from his heart to ours .

This is so lovely. I'm so glad to hear this in his own voice for the first time after all these years.
I listen to it like someone who.lost a life partner and praying, desperate , for his children. It brings tears to my eyes.
Remind me why Christopher's singing was dubbed to begin with? This is so beautiful! 😭
From what I heard, it’s because Plummer didn’t think his voice was that good for singing
100 agree, he has a wonderful voice .. made me cry and gave me goosebumps
@@officialchase02Plummer was clearly his own worst critic. He's pretty much the only person who thinks he wasn't good enough.
@@virtualviking8447 yea
You can tell that he isn't a trained singer but his voice is still lovely
I had no idea what to expect as i eagerly waited for Christopher Plummers version - but now that ive heard his version - i can so relate to Maria/Julia!! Oh to have a man like Chris sing this to you with such genuineness and sincerity - no wonder she looks completely smitten!! Ill be listening this version many, many times! ❤
It’s a film, weirdo!
@@thefonzkissgo away
Christopher Plummer’s voice is so sweet and sincere. What a lovely rendition of that beautiful song! ❤
Christopher Plummer is beyond perfection. Way too handsome & his voice can cause tearful crying. What a long time ago this was-1965!
This is so much more authentic and moving than the dubbed version. Sad they didn't keep this. He channeled his character in that moment so beautifully. I'm so happy that I finally got to hear the real rendition of Plummer singing this song, which is the heart of The Sound of Music.
Plummer may not have liked this role (not interesting enough, not enough character development) or the film (too sentimental), but he did make a lasting friendship with Julie Andrews. Those were his impressions of the film, not mine. Like most of the planet, I think the film is a timeless classic.
I don’t blame him! I do like the movie but it’s something I would only revisit once in a blue moon. I’ve seen it 10 times! But I’m glad they stayed good friends afterwards! Just makes me sad if COVID haven’t happened, Julie’s AFI tribute would have been their last public appearance together!
He likely felt that his career would always be under the shadow of The Sound of Music, but later in life his sentiments did change as he said he was grateful for the movie, saying it was an escape from reality for many and how it helped his career a lot
@@knguyennguyen5559 I could tell based on a reunion interview he did with Julie
It seems he especially hated "Edelweiss". And that he was drunk most of the time during filming.
He was such a wonderful actor and vocalist. Gave me a sense of comfort. Love this movie and this song .
Come si chiama il film non ricordo grazie
@@annaranzani1750 can you please translate to English ?
The older I get the more I appreciate this lovely film.
I know how you feel. I’m 31 and I was introduced to The Sound Of Music as a 13 year old. It took me almost a decade to give it another try. And since I transitioned from a boy to a man, I’ve now seen the movie 11 times. 5 of them have been since COVID hit
Christopher Plummers vocals is so wonderful why did they not use is version is beyond me l simply love ❤️ it 🎶🎥🎞️
Hey, this gave me goosebumps. It should have been accepted, he sang straight from the ❤️
This is one of my favorite scenes from the whole movie. The song and singing are obviously wonderful, but I love how the dreamy admiration of Captain von Trapp by Maria doesn't go unnoticed by the Baroness. The actress, Eleanor Parker, plays the scene masterfully.
This rendition of the song is just so beautiful and perfect for the characters, thank you for this ❤
When she started singing, it was obvious that this was the person and voice she was harmonizing with.
Makes us miss the old days of pure innocents..😢😢
This is beautiful, I wonder why they chose to dub him when he has such a lovely voice himself
He wanted it
Makes me only love Christopher Plummer even more. Im going to be 50 in Jan. And I always had and always will have the biggest crush on this man!!! The voice seals the deal!!!❤
ME TOO! HE WAS SO GORGEOUS! 💓🌺💖🌺💝🌺💘🌺💓🌺💞🌺💖🌺💝🌺😅
this gentleman plays his role effectively convincingly truly awardee in the film industry
I really like Christopher's voice!!! It is real and loving!!!! Very true to a family!!!
Both versions are good, but it seems more emotionally impactful because it comes out of the actor's mouth directly. It sounds like Christopher Plummer.
Best movie ever made! Christopher Plummers vocals are wonderful!
Never seen this before and I wish they’d kept it in. It’s lovely, vulnerable and uncertain and made me want to cry more than the one broadcast in the film. The way he sang forever at 1:42 almost made me teary. I thought this was beautiful tbh, feels very genuine.
Excited to hear christopher sing it rip ❤️
Stunning seeing and hearing his true voice which was even more beautiful when the actress playing his daughter sang.
I like his voice, should have kept this for the movie
I prefer this one. It's imperfect but so human and so intimate.
What a truly wonderful scene, dubbed or not, from the totally incredible movie. This scene will be shown for thousands of years into our future.
This is gorgeous. So natural and honest. A travesty it wasn’t used in the film.
This version is real and felt. Felt by him and all who hear him sing.
Christopher Plummer was one of my first crushes! ❤❤❤ love hearing his voice finally
I think every female from nine to ninety had a crush on him. I know I did snd I was only 11!
This is so much better! It’s so much more fitting of the character! Nervous and unsure, a man who hasn’t tried preforming since he lost the first love of his life. It gives so much more depth
One of my favorite songs in the whole movie.
What a treasure! I wish this were the version used in the film!
I had always assumed Plummer's voice was removed because he couldn't sing. I thought Plummer did a fine job singing. It really was good.
This sounds like an actual father in real life singing to his children. Would’ve been perfect for the movie.
I cant take this. This is too beautiful 😩😭😭
I find that he sings it with so much feeling ..❤😍🎶 so beautiful
❤ Austria is where the sound of music was filmed .and it's beautiful there!
I hope they release the movie with this rendition edited in at some point. It just fits so much better.
He was a true performer he acts with his face he means it
I will sit and watch this entire film just to hear this song. Mr. Plummer's singing is divine!
I love Christopher Plummer's version. ❤❤❤
Jeez I just love this version so much better. So much more genuine and beautiful.
Of all the beautiful songs in The Sound of Music, Edelweiss is my favorite. It really moves me. Christoper Plummer, well done.
God bless you Christopher! RIP
absolutely stunning! I wish they’d have used his rendition in the film😢
This original is far better than the used one in the movie. This is believable!!
What an exquisite film! Never will there be another like it that so beautifully captures that golden era of Hollywood, now long gone. Its not just a national treasure its a world treasure!
I didnt know till last week what an excellent musician he was, thinking first to have a career as a concert pianist. Thers a TH-cam documentary showing him tinkling the ivories so expertly and also him saying how much he wanted his own voice used.
Yes! And he won a Tony Award for a musical .
Never heard it put like that before when you said "tinkling the ivories!" I love it!
I remember Plummer saying that he faked the guitar accompaniment. Now, the guitarist has been credited: Vito Mumolo. I know this from the booklet of the Super Deluxe soundtrack CD.
@@yipengli1072 The guitar playing may have been acting, but Plummer is an amazing musician. For example, here (playing and improvising around the theme):

Such a talented artist, so missed.
@@Edelweiss-wj5zx Plummer mentioned that he loathed playing the guitar and that his fingers bled when oractising it. I know this from the commentary on the DVD and Blu-ray.
I've never heard Plummer sing. That was better than the dubbed version!
Did he do his own singing for An American Tail?
I’ve always loved Edelweiss! Especially hearing it during the Christmas season. But hearing Plummer sing it with his real singing is quite a surprise to me!
Beautiful version. Chris plummer had a great voice😁😍👏
Should have left this as it was. So true, so moving.
no matter how many times I have seen this I could still watch it over again!
I prefer Christopher Plummer's vocals!!! So awesomely genuine!
This scene always makes me cry
This is remarkably beautiful!! 👍👍🤓 I saw Christopher Plummer at a NYC Canadian Society Meeting in Manhattan in 1982 and I was mesmerized by his presentation! He was the real deal!!
This is my favourite film. Just loved the songs and actors. Seemed a time in life when there were no wars.
Aren’t you forgetting the movie was released during the Vietnam War
I keep thinking about this song during the recent years of the Hong Kong protest. "Bless my homeland forever."
Christopher Plummer is so handsome!! He has a great singing voice!! I wonder why they didn’t use his voice, as it’s very believable!!! 🥰
Christopher Plummer was a handsome man.
Best song ever created!
Beautiful.
I am in love with him in this scene ❤
Who grew up in the late 60s and early 70s watching this every year? Such a strong emotion this one brings.
When asked what is my favorite love scene in a movie, I think of Christopher and Julie when they are dancing on the terrace. Their eyes meet, so subtle, yet profound.
Don't know why they didn't leave this in. I can't see much difference with the movie version, and this sounds more authentic.
This is so beautiful. I agree with everyone, it was more emotional hearing it this way. And I think he has a pretty good singing voice even if it’s not perfect. The perfect singing used in the movie is great , but this takes you to a deeper place.
Wow, this is amazing. This has been my favorite movie since I was a kid. I read that Chris really wanted his voice to be used and they ended up going with Bill Lee. So glad to finally hear this!
He was gorgeous ❤
That was lovely. Much nicer than the oh so perfect voice that was dubbed in. That brought a tear to my eye.
The magic between Maria and Captain is wonderful . You did a very good job casting them. Love this movie forever ❤
this brought tears to my eyes. They never should have dubbed his voice. This version you can hear comes from his heart and that his stern and uncompromising affect was not as genuine as Maria may have thought.
That was beautiful, and definitely was not of inferior quality! Even though the man who was dubbed in did a great job, I wish they had left the original singing in.
This version is more authentic because the Captain said that he did not sing for a long time... A truly heart-warming rendition! The slightly bashful expression alongwith with a gentle shrug at the end of the song is so endearing. Captain and Maria looked beautiful together in the film! ❤️
My dear late mother passed away 20 years ago yesterday. She adored this film and went to see it at the cinema many times whilst it was showing. Such a simple song with so much warmth and love about a flower of beauty.
Christopher had a beautiful voice
This musical/ movie musical this story is pure magic🌹🌹🌹 I’ve always loved this film🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Fascinant film ! La-m vazut in urma cu vreo 55 ani .Toata viata va fi printre preferatele mele ❤❤❤
Beautiful. It brings such a tender feeling to this scene
I LOVE this version. So heartfelt.
this touches my heart so deeply, the all time favorite film of mine, certainly one of the best movies ever made. so beautiful.
