Bill Walsh was right stating, "If Jerry & Jimmy think they're gonna have the same success without each other, they're wrong". 26 years later neither has had the same success.

It ended up being true. Switzer was good really in 1994 & 1995 with the Cowboys before they lost to Carolina in the Divisional round in 1996 & went 6-10 in 1997. Parcells tried to get them back to the Super Bowl & Jason Garrett tried a couple times or so to get them there, but they ended up not getting even to the NFC Championship game.
Jimmy Johnson ended up going to the Miami Dolphins and basically went out with a whimper as Jacksonville beat Miami in Marino's last game as Dolphins QB in January 2000 by a final score of 62-7. I think that was Jimmy Johnson's last game as a head coach as well.
So, Bill Walsh ended up being right after all. Jerry Jones really messed up big time with basically firing Jimmy Johnson because of their egos, especially Jerry's getting out of hand.

there was a 14 year stretch in the NFL where the NFC teams won the Super Bowl starting in 84 with San Francisco over the Dolphins. Many of the AFC teams through that stretch fell to the Defensive and Ground-game philosophy that the NFC coaches carried; i.e. Walsh, Ditka, Parcells, Gibbs, Johnson, Holmgren. Mike Shanahan (a member of Bill Walsh's coaching tree) broke that streak (ironically using Terrell Davis heavily in the backfield.

Due to Jimmy Johnson trading for EVEN more picks afterward and, most importantly, knowing who to draft was what truly made the trade. Jerry has a ton of blame to bear, and it’s his ineptitude that has led to 22 years of futility. That said, even Jimmy has admitted that he had planned to resign that spring regardless because he was just burnt out from going 180 miles an hour for 5 years.
I think the incident at the owner’s meetings simply gave him a way to exit without having to look like a quitter.

I was a kid too and remember this rivalry well. Loved the 49ers, hated but respected the Cowboys. And yes, there was always tension between the two (it was war). I was crushed when Charles Haley got traded to the Cowboys but didn't know at the time that he didn't want to leave San Francisco but was forced to go. Glad to now hear Eddie (the owner) admit it was his worst mistake. Then I rejoiced when the Niners got Ken Norton Jr from Dallas and acquired Deion. Then once again I was disappointed when Deion backstabbed the Niners to join the Cowboys! It seemed like one bizarre rollercoaster ride and then after '95, both teams weren't the same. What a crazy time this was.

To me, as a Cowboys fan, the most interesting tidbit in this doc, is Jimmy asking Deion to not forget about him when it came time to choosing his destination in 1994. We have heard since from Jimmy that he got bored in places, and would have left Dallas, maybe even as soon as he ended up doing.
What he said to Deion, on the sidelines of his second Superbowl win, in what was his LAST game as Cowboys head coach, disproves all of that. He wouldnt have said that to Deion if he hadnt planned on coming back ATLEAST that next year, so whatever happened at that celebration dinner with Jerry, was the reason he left big D, and in my opinion, what was to be the greatest dynasty in NFL history. Man, it hurts as a Cowboys fan, because I think we threepeat in 1994 if Jimmy stays, and end up winning four in a row when we beat Pittsburgh the year after.
Jerry DID fire him in my opinion now. Jimmy agreed to it, but he didnt quit. Such a waste. It always pisses me off when you see situations like that, where LIFE IS GREAT, and dumb egos cause men to take it for granted, blow up something beautiful, and NEVER achieving the same success as they had together. A lot like great rock bands splitting up, and ending up playing at State Fairs, because they were nowhere near as good as solo acts.
And what have we received as Cowboys fans since Jimmy was run out of town, with a LOADED roster? One Superbowl win where we really didnt play well enough to win, if not for Neil O Donnell gifting us the championship with two awful throws, and almost THIRTY EFFING YEARS of mediocrity.

Sanders turned his head just as he stuck his arm across Irvin's chest so in the referee's eyes he was playing the ball. Aikman screwed up the throw.

byrongammon byrongammon, given that all the commentators were saying it was overthrown at the time, and people still think Michael would have had to reach too far to make the catch (which is baloney, he made catches like that all the time) I don’t think it was on Troy. Deion did two things that were PI, then and now; first he slammed into Irvin, throwing him off stride, and second he arm barred him, both holding down his arms and restricting his ability to run, and no amount of looking back for the ball is ever supposed to override that kind of activity.

Leonard Marshall turned Joe Montana into Humpty Dumpty. Erik Howard destroyed any hope Roger Craig had of making the Hall Of Fame when he caused that fumble that LT recovered. Gary Reasons' run for 30 yards on the fake punt return when the 49ers had 10 men on the field. The 49er front office should have never let Bill Walsh retire. Seifert wasn't cut from the same cloth.
