They had some pretty memorable close postseason games in early 70s and of course who can forget the famous, epic "Catch" game in 1981 where Niners advanced to their first Super Bowl. What's less well-known is that until the 1981 season, this rivalry was essentially one-sided: Dallas eliminated Niners from postseason 3 straight years in a row (1970-72) with the 1972 NFC Div. playoff game that SF fans believe and I agree too, should've won but Dallas led by Roger Staubach pulled off an Aaron Rodgers-esque thrilling last-second comeback to win 30-28. I also find it very amusing that what people tend usually forget is that the following week Cowboys, go into RFK Stadium with Craig Morton as QB in NFCCG, and get completely walloped by Redskins. That trend of high-tense melodramatic events where a good NFL team pulls off some unbelievable miracle playoff win but gets crushed next week in a bigger, more important game reminds me of lot of 2010's Green Bay Packers, particularly the 2014, 16, and maybe even last year's team. And similarity speaking, pretty much the Donovan McNabb-era 2000's Eagles. I think the last realistic shot McNabb's Eagles at making a SB and possibly winning it was their close NFCCG loss to Arizona in January 2009. That was Philly's 5th NFCCG appearance of the decade and although it was a close loss, in hindsight, many Eagles executives, Lurie, Eagles fans and Andy Reid finally realized McNabb's best days were behind him and was incapable of leading the team back to a second SB appearance. Within two years, McNabb was gone and Vick was in. By 2013, Andy Reid had left mostly gracefully to continue building and developing a new SB dynasty.
Too bad in the 90s they had a great owner. Now they got an owner that moved the team, has bad talent, coaching, fleeces Santa Clara and bought the election. Everything on the 49ers is garbage, the steelers were more respected as the 6 that won that superbowl. The 49ersclearly cheated and will get nothing for crapalo.
Everything about the rivalry is just crazy, it’s like they were made to oppose each other. Gold + Red vs. Silver and Blue, California vs.Texas, all things that are commonly compared to each other
tasan215 rivalry doesn't necessarily have to do with classic games all the time. from 1981 to 2002 I believe only 6 season did the 49ers and Giants not play each other. Also from 1981-1993 they played each other in the playoffs 6 times with each team winning 3 playoffs games a piece.
It's easy to forget that these teams have such a great rivalry considering they don't share a division. Most would say the Redskins are the Cowboys biggest rivalry and the Rams or Seahawks the Niners biggest but these two teams both have great tradition and zero love for one another.
This was a REAL rivalry. The Shecocks would have to win at least 3 more Super Bowls to come even close of the level of the 49ers and Cowboys to be legit rivals which is never going to happen
Red vs Blue Gold vs Silver California vs Texas 5 Super Bowls each Both teams have inspired one another, with Jerry Jones saying most recently how he was impressed with how the 2011-2013 49ers had built their team through the draft with the offensive line, which is why he wanted his team to try and do the same and built one of the best lines since then as well. I'm a 49ers fan. I tip my hat to Dallas fans with respect and say that the game is still afoot. The quest for our 6th continues.
I am 49ers fan and may not like the Cowboys either, I still respect what they have been through the decades. I am red and gold untill dead and cold but at the end of the day is just game but our passion during a moment of defeat or a moment in victory makes us go Crazy happy or crazy sad and mad lol.
Vin Scully calling The Catch!? Nice. The one game I'd love to watch was the 1972 playoff game #3. Dallas is down 28-13 in the 4th and Staubach, off the bench, leads them to a 30-28 last minute win.
I watched it on TV, and as a young Cowboys fan, it was a great Christmas gift. The young producer of this TH-cam video did good to mention it as #3, but he could've spent more time on its history. Staubach had led the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl victory against Miami in January of that year, so big things were expected for the 72-73 season. Then he got sidelined in the preseason when Marlin McKeever of the Rams collided with Roger and separated his shoulder, opening the door for Morton, who expertly guided the Cowboys to the playoffs. The 49ers were showing their age that season, and it was really Brodie's last good year with the team. The 49ers Vic Washington started the game by running the opening kickoff back for a TD, and for 3 1/2 quarters it was all San Fran. But Landry kept going for the field goals each time a Dallas drive was stopped. Rather than the game birthing Staubach, who had already had an excellent Super Bowl season previously, I think it was the birth of Calvin Hill, who had assumed the starting halfback position from Duane Thomas in the season. Hill gained 136 yards. But in the end it was Roger who smoothly guided the Cowboys back with the TD passes to Billy Parks and Ron Sellers. Not household names, but they were stopgaps between the Bobby Hayes era and Drew Pearson/Tony Hill. Strangely enough, one of my biggest memories of the game was Brodie, trying to bring the 49ers back with 50 seconds left. He threw an interception to Cowboys safety Charlie Waters, and was in on the tackle of Waters, and tried in vain to wrest the ball from him. I think he knew it was his last chance to go to a Super Bowl, and even as a Cowboys fan I felt sorry for him, he had been such a great QB for the 49ers.
Without the Cowboys and 49ers rivalry, the NFL might not be the most popular spectator sport in the United States. No offense to great fanbases like Pittsburgh and Green Bay, but those spices just aren't as appealing to the masses. Fantastic video, period.

Something that surprisingly gets overlooked by the nat'l media, historians and fans alike, was how the Cowboys completely turned around the effects of the 'The Catch' in 1982 to beating the 49ers in the 1992 title game. Complete role-reversal right there as now it was the upstart Cowboys ending the 49ers dominance of the 80's. As a Niner fan, I was crushed, not because they lost that game in '92, but because a new changing of the guard was taking place right before our eyes.

Historic and classic. I was at the game in 2011. The battle on the field only mirrored an equally intense war in the stands at SF. The fans of both teams went back and forth all day. This fueled an incredible fight to the finish that went into overtime. When Romo hit Holley there was a roar of Cowboys fans that is still unforgettable to this day. This last season the teams met again in SF. I was there again. Both teams were struggling. Yet the game was a sellout. A testament to the legend of both teams and this special rivalry. HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS
Amazing that there have been two more memorable playoff showdowns between these franchises SINCE THIS VIDEO CAME OUT!! Time to update your list, Elliott?
Such an intense rivalry. As a Cowboys fan, two things stick out: 1. After "The Catch" I must've sat staring at the TV for a good 5 minutes after the game ended, coming to grips with the fact that it was really over and the Cowboys didn't pull it out (they still had a drive after that Dwight Clark touchdown). The most devastating loss I can remember as a Cowboys fan, even worse than losing a second time in the Superbowl to the Steelers in the 70's. 2. Terrell Owens celebrating on the star twice. I probably would've forgotten about it had the Cowboys not lost that game. After that, I never liked Owens even when he became a Cowboy and made some very good plays for us.
To this day I cant stand the 49ers, my Cowboys could lose every game in a season as long as the win that game against them! Now I love football and will give credit to the individuals of any team. Jerry Rice is arguable the best receiver ever but definitely the classiest. Of course having the greatest running back in Emmit Smith is why they won 3 out 4 Superbowls and of course it was the hated niners (missed call) who stopped it from being 4 in a row :(
Actually, The Catch occurred on Jan. 10, 1982, part of the 1981 NFL season. In week six of the ‘81 season, the 49ers thrashed the Cowboys 45-14. So, the Cowboys wanted some payback in that NFC Championship Game, but lost they again. Thus the 49ers 1980’s dynasty began.
I’ve seen some intense rivalries, since the 70’s, some of which were downright nastier than this one. But I’ve never seen a rivalry between two great NFC teams, with two great traditions, fighting for NFL supremacy as the 49ers-Cowboys of the 90s. That Romo game in 2011 pissed me off for weeks after that. Even though it lead to the Niners winning like 8 straight or whatever, I wanted that Cowboys game. That shit stuck with me, lol.
1971 NFC Championship game is number One moment in the Dallas & SFrisco rivalry... 1992 NFC Championship Game is number Two and 1993 NFC Championship game is number three... The catch's Game is number four but only for first win of SFrisco over Dallas...
toño garcia disagree number 1 is 1981, NFC championship game it forged the 49er dynasty , and ended the legend of Tom Landry , #2 ..is 1992 NFC championship game Dallas would have their little dynasty of the early nineties , #3 1972 championship game
As a Cowboys fan I do love the rivalry and think it is one of the best in all of sports go Cowboys but I do have to confess that Steve Young is one of my all time favorite players not just QB but football player, he played with heart and soul and always gave it all I was proud of him when he got the SB win well deserved and when it comes to great QBs I believe is overlooked and underrated
How good was that 92 Cowboys team! First in defense and second in offense and their special teams were awesome to! Oh and let's not forget the coaching staff!
Greatest rivalry in football. Jimmy G is making the Niners look good again, hoping this rivalry will be revived and Dak can get his game together next season
These two teams r so similar, like the 1972 birth of Americas Team game in candlestic when staubach. Came off the bench to beat the 9ers at home. And joe montanas the catch in 1982, 2 of the greatest qbacks of all time, thats the NFL
for 15 or so years, the AFC never got close to winning a superbowl. For many of those years, the best game of the year was the NFC championship. So many times that was the Cowboys versus the Niners. The superbowl didn't even compare
These two teams made early 90's football very memorable

1971 NFC Championship game is number One moment in the Dallas & SFrisco rivalry... 1992 NFC Championship Game is number Two and 1993 NFC Championship game is number three... The catch's Game is number four but only for first win of SFrisco over Dallas...
toño garcia disagree number 1 is 1981, NFC championship game it forged the 49er dynasty , and ended the legend of Tom Landry , #2 ..is 1992 NFC championship game Dallas would have their little dynasty of the early nineties , #3 1972 championship game
Awesome!
Two great teams with rich tradition!
Can't wait to see the Cowboys and 49ers play later this season! Go Dallas!!!
This is one of those rivalries that any football fan can talk about no matter what generation it is.
How good was that 92 Cowboys team! First in defense and second in offense and their special teams were awesome to! Oh and let's not forget the coaching staff!
Only the Cowboys have so many rivalries.
Greatest rivalry in football. Jimmy G is making the Niners look good again, hoping this rivalry will be revived and Dak can get his game together next season
I don’t know if there is a better rivalry in ANY SPORT
R.I.P Dwight Clark
Now just imagine if Jerry didn't piss off Jimmy Johnson. Might be regarded as one of the best coaches ever if that were the case.
Thanks for the Top 10 Greatest Moments, even though it opened up a few old wounds. :P
9:25 That cheeky rabona
TREMENDOUS HISTORY!!!
Not just a great football rivalry but a great sports rivalry as well.
Classic Rivalry.
Awesome games!! Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. 🏈
Red vs Blue
Gold vs Silver
Classic.
Terrell Owens the best wr to play on Dallas and 49ers
Jerry Rice for the 49ers -------Irvin for the Cowboys
Rob Roux Irvin for the Cowboys haha 😂😂😂
danny fonseca Irvin has more stats with the boys than to does
not only was Jerry Rice the best receiver for the 49ers, he is the best receiver of all time and in debate for the true GOAT...
Brian Pike with stickum right ?
Is no one going to admire the robona onside kick by the cowboys kicker 9:27
I'm old enough to have watched both games at #6, and maaaan, Tony Romo and Ronnie Lott are GROWN MEN.
Videazo! empece a ver NFL aprox en el 93 asi que recuerdos esos dueles, realmente era el super tazon, luego la final era un tramite.
Brady always shows a pic of himself and his mom at "the Catch" game.......lol...
These two teams r so similar, like the 1972 birth of Americas Team game in candlestic when staubach. Came off the bench to beat the 9ers at home. And joe montanas the catch in 1982, 2 of the greatest qbacks of all time, thats the NFL
Greatest rivalry.....ever!!!!
Aww shit, here we go again!
for 15 or so years, the AFC never got close to winning a superbowl. For many of those years, the best game of the year was the NFC championship. So many times that was the Cowboys versus the Niners. The superbowl didn't even compare
Thanks for doing this.
And here we go again
Fantastic games.
Great video, thanks for the upload NFL
Did anybody else come here after it was officially announced that both teams will play against each other on primetime?!
Cowboys for life
The moment the Niners stopped playing at Candlestick, a part of the past Niners were left behind, The Niners team feels empty now.
@Chicago Tomahawk It's not being a bandwagon, The Yorks need to learn a lesson
@Chicago Tomahawk I don't think other owners fire their best coach in years, Yea.
Cowboys forever.
Here after My Niners did work against Dallas!
The Cowboys have the
very beautiful and gorgeous cheerleaders in the NFL!They got the moves!
