Jimmy is modest. He won’t say Jerry’s ego ran him off. I admire that about him.
Jimmy Johnson was the man that gave us back to back Super Bowl wins and the team he created won the third Super Bowl. He deserves both the Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame. We Dallas Cowboys' fans know he deserves it.
I thought it was the Niners when they gift wrapped Charles Haley?????
Jimmy Johnson by far my favorite NFL personality. Loved what he did for the Cowboys. Glad he is happy and living his best life.
If Jerry Jones would’ve let this man, keep cooking, instead of getting jealous and wanting some of the recognition we probably could’ve won five Super Bowls in the 90s

We?? Did you happen to be on team or on the couch?
Jimmy is now a hall of famer and in the ring of honor. Oh sweet justice 😭
I love jimmy he’s hilarious
Was one of the saddest days when I heard Jimmy was leaving the Cowboys. Oh the history that would have been made if he had stayed that 94/95 season.
lol do you need a tissue ? Saddest days of your life ? Must be an exciting life you lead
It's only a game
It’s football baby.. damn jerry
True fine‼️
That day was the start of the curse and downfall for the Dallas Cowboys on the field. Even though they won a superbowl after he left it was still his team because he was the architect of that team.
These interviews are PURE GOLD. What a treasure for future generations.
Thank you!
Look up Joe Buck's interview with esteemed athlete Artie Lange, that's another great one
@@charlesfries yeah. Says more about Joe. He supported Artie after that and wrote a forward to one of his books. Class act. Artie on the other hand. 🤷🏻♂️
Well put sir I concur
My team Cowboys. My coach Jimmy Johnson. Thank you for the wonderful memories of early 90s.
PA (positive attitude) + E (effort)=Performance.
I've always been a Cowboys fan, not always a happy fan but a fan. Jimmy Johnson has always been a favorite after Miami fame. After this interview, TOTAL RESPECT!
Jimmy is one of my heroes in life. Whenever I listen to him speak, I learn so much. He doesn't get enough credit for taking the risks he took to build that Dallas team. He was mocked badly by the press for those moves he made. I hope Jerry and Jimmy can be reconciled again at Cowboys stadium one day.
Seems like the kind of guy who doesn't need to please anyone but himself. You get the sense that he's going to do it his way even if he fails. Truly a man of conviction and confidence.
@@counterculture10 Exactly. To me this is what leadership looks like. Men will rally around him. I wasn't on the practice field, but I have the sense when players saw him, even though practicing is hard and tedious; they had enough respect for him to say, "Hey, lets do it for Jimmy."
Y'all better appreciate this history while they're here.... GO COWBOYS!
Coach Johnson goes into the Cowboys Ring of Honor this weekend 🙌🏾 ⭐️
We can't wait to see it!
Jimmy would gather the Miami Hurricane players and talk about what they would do after college. He wouldn't talk to them about playing in the NFL. What were you going to do for work. The impact on those young men Jimmy Johnson had is amazing. Many benefitted from his time he was a Coach.
Jimmy Johnson was a Great Coach.
Yes!
Man, he was the best thing to happen to the Dallas Cowboys! Jerry has regretted his decision for the past 30 years!
Greatest football coach ever. Jimmy Johnson is an amazing person.
Yes he is!
He made an impact in his second year in Dallas Hershel Walker trade he capitalized
May have been the best talent evaluator that ever lived.
Yup, a legend
@@YouthIncSportsI'm not aware of anyone even close.
He did a sensational job drafting RBs for the Dolphins.
Simply the best talent evaluator in the history of the game. At Miami, he recruited the best players. I think of the 86 Canes and according to Jimmy, it was his most talented team he ever coached, HS, college or pro. He is an amazing man, and by far, the best coach in football
@@rog9601 Belichick
As a Niner fan this man took 2 Super Bowls from us and headed his team over after he left for a 3rd!
Growing up England during the 70s&80s watching the soap series Dallas, and then finally getting to see American Football on English TV, I started to follow the Cowboys, but Jimmy Johnson and his Team made me a fanatic, and still to this day I rerun those great Super Bowl days. What a truly amazing interview and such a wonderful and inspiring guy. Thank you
Come back from the dark side, become a Green Bay Packers fan. We play outside like a real football team😂😂😂. Kinda joking, it's a great game and league to watch! And fun game to play if you get a chance!
He held players accountable and winning mattered. Today thats all out the window. If he stayed they would have won 5 in the 90s
It’s hard to say after the salary cap happened he couldn’t threaten players like he did
The Cowboys would have made the right moves and stayed on top no doubt.@@sp4de395
I really appreciate how Jimmy cut kickers and 3rd string running backs when they made mistakes.
Leon Lett 👍
4 Super Bowls for Sure!! Barry Switzer's lack of Attention to Preparation & Discipline lead to the Downfall of the Cowboys!! 1994 NFC Championship is a Different Game with Jimmy Johnson coaching!
@@sp4de395stop the 🧢 the cowboys definitely would have won 3 more rings if jimmy wasn't fired ✌️
Just glad he coached Dallas gave us lots of joy
Tons of joys and Super Bowls
Wish they had mentioned that he went to high school in Port Arthur with Janis Joplin. Being from the area I can relay that Jimmy's HS, Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson High School, was always a local powerhouse.
This is why this man was able to extract the best out of his players....hard work, dedication, accountability and a true love for, not only the game, but the players. I will forever cherish the memories of watching the Jimmy Johnson Cowboys win the SBs.
As a kid hearing Jimmy was leaving crushed us. We knew it would never be the same without him and started the hatred towards Jerry.
Why? You heard it directly from Jimmy....he was gone.
One of the great coaches , and a even better person !
Love this man, my team , my head coach. Cowboys haven’t been the same since. Parcells could have gotten them there, just didn’t have all the pieces together. But Jerry, if he could just hire the right people and stay out of their way, but he NEVER will.
Jerry is the reason Jimmy had the opportunity to be a HC in the NFL. You know damn well how much hatred was generated when Jimmy replaced Tom Landry.
Doesn’t change the fact this organization hasn’t been the same since, and the only constant has been Jerry. I get it, without Jerry there wouldn’t have been a Jimmy Johnson, but without Jimmy there is no 3 championships. And I know he was there for only two, but those were his players that won that 3rd Super Bowl.
@@frankp9156
All organizations grow and change no one stays the same the hell are you talking about ?
@@sp4de395exactly
All good managers always hire people smarter and better in their specific specialty and get out their way.
Cowboys would have been the Patriots before the Patriots Dynasty if Jerry had not run him off.
They would've been the only team to 4 peat if not for Jerry Jones.
Maybe 5@@Manny-nm8dh
Jerry didnt run him off. Jimmy left
@@Manny-nm8dhnah. No one was beating the 94 Niners
@@Manny-nm8dh The 49 ers had something to say about that in 1994 they were the best in the league that year
Jimmy Johnson is a total inspiration to all coaches coming up. Every coach, whatever sport should see this video. My son is a fantastic youth coach and I am going to send it to him. As an coach myself, you can never have enough information about how to coach young players
Jimmy was amazing. And he still is, look at his speech when he received the Ring of Honor at the stadium. What a pity and what a shame he did not have the chance to repeat it in 1994.
It's amazing that Jimmy said he should have benched Jimmy for the national title. He said it was his responsibility and learned a lot from that game. I'm amazed at the way he learns and teaches himself to be better.
Respect for Mr Johnson. Very rarely you find sports people you can truly learn from.
What a legend.
So much wisdom shared by a great coach. I'm happy Jerry and Jimmy buried the hatchet that finally allowed Coach Johnson into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
Philadelphia Eagles fan, here. Jimmy Johnson belongs in the Hall of Fame. He'll be there.
He is there
I still think Your One of The Greatest Ever, Cowboy Coach and I see a Cowboy🏈 Dynasty in You, "Sir"! Now a great human being Plus🌟! Love❤ Your hair my Man👍😉
I'm a huge cowboys fan and I still have to believe there is more to him leaving Dallas with dealing with Jerry Jones than just he wasn't having fun anymore and Aikman,Emmitt and Michael touched on that
Jimmy is the best.. i could have listened for another 3 hours!!!! He needs to be in THE HALL
Jimmy Johnson is in the Hall of Fame he will be inducted to Ring of Honor this Saturday 12/30/2023 at Cowboys Game v Lions
Thanks Jimmy for all the great memories
Excellent interview. Can't stand the Cowboys, but always respected Jimmy's coaching philosophy ever since he was at Miami.
Haters suck, get a life.
JJ tells great stories about the wild, wild times in the NCAA back in the day. Appreciate his honesty.
That’s the hardest thing as a leader is to convince a business or a group of underachievers that YOUR way is the right way. Convincing people who have never gotten good at something difficult to work hard is so hard.
"When we say 10 o'clock, I mean 9:30!"
Thank you Jimmy I could live with that quote the rest of my life.
I learned this in the Army , if you're not 15 minutes early you're late !
I was always a Cowboys fan growing up. When Jimmy Johnson was hired I was so excited. As expected he delivered 2 S.B. Titles in 5 seasons. Jerry Jones ego couldn’t handle the fact Johnson was getting the credit. Next thing you know Johnson “resigns”. The Dynasty we missed out on.
Jimmy said he was a wandering soul...it wasn't just Jerry. Jimmy was gone anyway.
Very much enjoy these interview sessions.
Coach Johnson had already moved to Dolphins when I started watching NFL and all I remember was a playoff drubbing of 63-7 by Jaguars against him and Marino. However, it is great to watch his life journey and listening to him. What a great story and story teller!
i was born in 88 so i didnt really get to see him coach but we need him to coach dallas again. maybe someday cause his intelligence and attitude is needed again in dallas
Its been nearly 30 years since Dallas last won a Super Bowl. I was 18 years old and graduating from High School.
Wow! All these years I had a bad view of Johnson but after listening to him I’m very impressed. Seems like an amazing person.
Interesting to hear Jimmy’s perspective on why he left the Cowboys. Seems as though Aikman thought Jimmy was more or less replaced by Switzer at the behest of Jones.
Oh well. Cry more
@@paleo704I’m a Raiders fan…. I don’t have any tears left to cry over Jimmy Johnson.
I'm 55 and lived outside of Dallas in Plano from 1975-1978, which were my 1st 3 years of pop warner and little league. The 1976 Bad News Bears, with Walter Mathauew "to me" sums up what was expected of kids, and specifically kids in sports in those day's, and for whatever may be viewed as inappropriate, or excessively harsh, I am extremely thankful to have been a kid at that time, and I am still very grateful for the lessons I learned then today!
As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I was not a fan of Jimmy Johnson initially but he won me over. What is too bad is that he departed the Cowboys and I always thought after that he lacked staying power. If I was an owner of an NFL team, even if I gave him everything he wanted, I would be concerned about him walking off the job. Had he stayed with the Cowboys, they could have won five consecutive championships (and four for sure).
Fair
The Herschel Walker trade will go down as the greatest trade of all time. Absolute genius.
I hated JJ when he was a coach, clearly jealous, but I have always admired his talent and personality. Truly a HOF person in football.
Great stories. Jimmy Johnson was an amazing coach.
incredible and inspiring interview, JJ is a great man, God bless him and hopefully he comes back to the Cowboys to make them again a successfull team
Gotta love Jimmy Johnson but he wasn't being completely honest (38:00) when discussing leaving the Cowboys. It was about him and Jerry Jones and ego's. It was about the statement that Jerry Jones made saying after Super Bowl 28, that “There are 500 coaches who could have won the Super Bowl with our team.” That was a definite dig at Jimmy Johnson and it's been said time and time again, that that comment was what really pushed Johnson into leaving.
Initially, the deal between the two men was that Jerry would handle everything involving finances, and Jimmy would handle all of the football aspects of the team. Well, Jerry did a hell of a job with the finances and is the owner of the team, he eventually wanted some of that limelight, maybe too much, it depends who is asked. The Cowboys weren't the money generators they are today and Jerry Jones spent a lot of hours working hard to make the Cowboys very prosperous. Jimmy Johnsons has stated since then that maybe he should have been more willing to share the limelight with Jerry Jones back then.
This is an older video, since then Jimmy Johnson was selected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020 and just a few days ago, into the Cowboys Ring of Honor. He was selected to the College Hall of Fame in 2012. Jimmy Johnson is now 80 ears old and looks and sounds pretty much like he does in this video. He's an ageless wonder. a self made man, and a much loved man and coach.
As an Eagles fan, I hated Jimmy when he coached the Cowboys. But I have much respect for him. He was a masterful coach, leader of man, and a master of sport psychology. That being said, thank God he left that team. They would have dominated for years to come.
Jerrah's 2 biggest mistakes: 1. Firing Johnson 1a. Passing on Randy Moss
As a Cowboys fan it was sad not only Jimmy leaving, but the day Tom Landry was fired as well. Both head coaches built Cowboys dynasties, Jimmy in the 90s and Landry in the 70s. Both are true gold football legends.
Landry needed to be fired. He was an awful coach from 86-88. Jerry Jones had the right to hire a different coach when he bought the team.
@@paleo704 I agree with u on just that one point. Dallas was struggling and not winning in his last three seasons at the helm. He was the one who started what the Cowboys became as we know them, "America's Team", the most popular sports franchise for many years, the most watched NFL team til this day with legends and elite talents like "Captain Comeback" Roger the Dodger Staubach, "Mr Cowboy" Bob Lily, "Bullet" Bob Hayes, Tony Dorsett, etc. Yes, he overstayed his time with Dallas and should have left earlier at a high point, but it was tough seeing him being such a coaching legend in pro football to have left Dallas in the way that he did. Just my feelings on it.
As a lifelong 49ers fan, obviously I hate the Cowboys and that 90s rivalry was as deep rooted hatred as it got, but I *ALWAYS* respected Jimmy Johnson through it all
Wow...another great interview,Mr buck is one of the best interviewers in my opinion it's like your there as part of the discussion makes everyone fell relaxed, hope you do more of these maybe let viewers make some suggestions it really doesn't matter who it is it will be good
Greatest coach in Cowboys history!!
There was alot of talented coaches and athletes come out of Arkansas under the umbrella of Frank Broyles back in the day. JIMMY JOHNSON & JERRY JONES were two of the best. I, too, wished Jerry would've swallowed his pride and just let Jimmy continue to be coach of the Dallas Cowboys. I think Jimmy would've continued to win many more Super Bowls if Jerry would've just stepped aside and let Jimmy do the job his way.....
well if you watch from the 37 min mark he says he wasn't having fun... he already had bought a house in the keys.. so it was just as much his fault as Jerrys... two men with large egos...not a good match..never coached for 5 years in any one place.. that's all you need to know
@@johnguertin3884Yes, but was it due to Jerry's meddling? He coached afterward
@@MixxMatrix yes Miami for 4 years once ..again 4 years the story is jerry stopped by a table at the owners meeting in march lots of cowboy personnel including jimmy were at that table.. lots of drinking going on .jerry made a toast to which Jimmy did not participate... owner makes a toast coach gives him a f^% you ...jerry later tells a reporter anyone of 500 coaches can coach this team ..that gets out Jimmy blows his stack and the rest is history ..so think what you may jerry is the owner and GM so you can call it meddling ...put yourself in his shoes two grown men who cant get past their own egos that's how I see it
Most all people down here in the greater Dallas area did not like Jerry and Jimmy when they ‘came to town’. Things changed and today a lot of people down here really like Jimmy.
BIG BIG BIG LOVE AND RESPECT TOO COACH JIMMY THE REASON IM A COWBOY FAN. LOVE YOU COACH. 🇬🇧🇵🇰
So much respect for this man. Hardest thing in my life was losing my best friends, Max & Phoenix. Best friends don't lend you a hand, they lend you a paw.
I hate the cowboys fans of today, but I can see why y’all are so bitter. This man is one of the two main pillars of greatness in your franchise and the league in general. I love Jimmy Johnson. Would have loved to play for this man at any level.
Everyone he's been as a coach he's been successful. Those Miami hurricane teams in the 80s were very good
Much love coach JJ from a Miami Alumn!!
I'd have put Jimmy on the spot and asked him who was the better QB he coached... Aikman or Marino? The way he would dissect those two amazing QBs in comparison to one another would have been a thing of beauty.
Jimmy took over an absolute dumpster fire of a team and turned them into champions in 4 years. Then won again the year after. Amazing work ethic but as he said it comes with a very high cost. He's much happier on tv and it's great to see because he's earned his peace. Thanks Jimmy. Have fun today and have more fun tomorrow.
Caring family and hard work are the two most essential ingredients for a good life - great wisdom from Jimmy Johnson. Those who have these two are greatly blessed.
Randy White, Too Tall Jones and Danny White along with Coach Landry are all Cowboys Legends!
Landry was the Cowboys and the team was on the rebound as they had Walker, Irvin and we're getting ready to draft Aikman before Landry was let go...
I didn't like it at the time but came to appreciate Jimmy Johnson and what he did accomplish.
Perspective.
If you would have stayed with the Cowboys you could have won 5 or more Super Bowls. I think your the best coach and your a winner.
Not with the 49 ers around, they were just as good in the 90s as they were in the 80s
49 ers never would have beaten a Jimmy Johnson coached team.@@michaelleroy9281
I've known Jerry and Jimmy from Arkansas 60-64. I learned a lot from this interview. He has mellowed well.
Host forgot, Jimmy as a player won a National Championship as well
Dallas left a good three Super Bowls on the table because JJ & JJ couldn't stay together. The '85 Bears did the same thing, only with Ditka and Buddy Ryan.
Loved it! What a great interview. Jimmy Johnson dropped several pearls of wisdom in this one.
THE GREATEST COACH...JUST IMAGINE IF HE NEVER HAD TO LEAVE THE AMOUNT OF SUPERBOWLS WOULD BE RIDICULOUS
Jimmy Johnson was the greatest ever
Love hearing about his humble family life! Great guy, great Cowboy!
Growing up as a Bills fan through the Super Bowl years, I hated Jimmy Johnson. But I have to admit I've grown to really like him alot and really do admire his career and him as a person. I would give anything to go back in time and be able to sit down and have a conversation with JJ and Marv Levy
I was looking forward to this. Thank you for posting.
Hope you enjoyed it!
Jimmy Johnson was and is one hell of a couch and a person.
