  • Build, painting, and weathering of the Amusing Hobby Neubaufahrzeug tank in 1/35 scale. The model kit in this video was supplied by Hobby Link Japan: shop.hlj.com/3ayikfl
    The Neubaufahrzeug was a medium tank developed by the Germans from 1932 to 1937, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Its name translates to "new construction vehicle" - an attempt to hide its true purpose from Allied governments. Two initial prototypes were constructed by Rheinmetall using soft steel, followed by three more prototypes in armoured steel. Amusing Hobby's version of the Neubaufahrzeug represents the three armoured prototypes. These tanks were tested at the Putlos proving grounds in Germany and then deployed to Norway in 1940. Amusing Hobby offers painting and decal schemes for both the Putlos training grounds and the Norwegian campaign.
    In this video I experiment with some colour modulation to enhance the dunkelgrau paint scheme, and add some basic weathering using an oil paint pin wash and some pigments for dust effects.

    Great model! I can already see something of the shape of this cupola in the cupolas of the Mark IIIs and IVs... It has probably been written before, but in case it hasn't: the name means somehing like New or newly build vehicle. Neu-bau-fahrzeug. Basically it was a code name, just like the British ''tank'' in WW1. The Germans weren't supposed to build armoured fighting vehicles.

    @markfergerson2145 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice choice of an "oddball" subject and nice build. I like that trick of letting the weathering material fall into place when upending the vehicle.
    If it makes you feel any better, I think you could have easily gotten away with a bit more of the dust effects on the upper deck and turrets. i get that you didn't want to overwhelm the tank with weathering but still, it could believably have been dirtier.
    As for the few kit defects, the lack of enough track pins is troubling especially when the suspension is clearly meant to be poseable at the least. That's very puzzling.
    I have a little less of a problem with the instructions parts callouts for the different versions. I seem to recall reading that later versions of this tank occasionally used parts from earlier versions for various reasons including lack of funds to make new parts as well as the "stealth" nature of the project.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Mark. Yes, I agree about the dust. Perhaps I should have tried enamel effects instead - they are far more forgiving and I would have been more willing to experiment. Pigments are so hard to remove once applied. The tracks - yep, I am totally baffled by the lack of pins, and although I think I could have made a mistake, I don't see how I could have lost two entire sprues of pins and the instruction's sprue map also be coincidentally wrong too.

    I wonder about two things: the name, date, and place (Uffz Lührig, +26.04.40, Kvam, Norwegen). Sounds like the date and place of the death of a crew member? On that date and place, two Neubaufahrzeug were disabled. Second: I think the inside was painted light whitish/yellow? Why not do that first on this model when you leave the hatches open? Excellent work and a joy to watch.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Fred. That's interesting - I didn't really think about what that marking meant before, but what you're saying makes some sense. As for the interior - I didn't paint it cremeweiss because it would just reveal that the interior is empty :) Black hides that fact nicely, plus with just a small hatch open the interior would be very dark anyway.

    • @fredmidtgaard5487
      @fredmidtgaard5487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ModelNerd I agree with you that not much would be seen of the inside anyway (cremeweiss).... but I think I would try it anyway - maybe just around the brim of the hatch?. About the name etc: I wonder: Uffe is a common German name. Uffz is absolutely not. I'm not German (I'm Norwegian) but it might be a misspelling. I really need to dig into those markings to find out why they chose to write it like that in the model. And what was the history behind the original.

      @@ModelNerd These, for the time, huge tanks were sent during operation Weserübung (the German attack on Norway) with a trade ship to Oslo. There were three Neubaufahzeug 8, 9, and 10 in Norway. They were nicknamed the "Elefantengeschwader" (The Elephant platoon) because of the size and color. Of all things, they were sent on the trade ship from Buenos Aires named "Arche Noah 1" to Oslo! Do not try to tell me that Germans don't have humor! Anyway, number 9 had problems and was returned to get fixed (possibly after some escapades in Eastern Norway, depending on sources). No 8 and 10 went to Kvam where number 8 got into heavy fighting on the main street involving 3 Hotchkiss 25mm canons commanded by Corporal Stokes on April 25th. One of the shots hit directly in the aim for shooting and Feldwebel (Sergeant) Faulhaber was immediately killed. A second shot hit the driver's vision hatch and very severely injured Unterofficier Uffz Lührig (I was wrong! Uffz is a name! and not a misspelling!). Uffz managed to drive the tank into safety, without vision and deadly injured. This was at 1400 on the 25th of April. Uffz died just after midnight on the 26th. The 3 Hotchkiss were easily taken out by other forces. The Neubaufahrzeug No8 was too damaged to be used again (according to some sources) and was blown up in situ in Kvam. Other sources claim it was moved to Ukraine and fought there until 1942. More likely is probably that they were dissembled in Germany in 1941. Anyway, part of a damaged track is in a museum in Kvam Norway, which is the only remains of No 8 today. So: Uffz Lührig is a real person who did an extraordinary feat with this particular tank. And died on that date. If the tank actually had this marking is not certain. Particularly if the official record that the tank was blown up before the unit moved ahead is true it would not be clear why they would paint the name on the tank. The No 8 was used in propaganda (pictures from Kvam were used claiming to be from the Carpathians in 1944), and No 9 was attached to the Norwegian 5th SS Wiking division fighting on the East front (another humorous twist!). A good source is de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neubaufahrzeug if you read German. I have asked the manager of the Kvam war museum for more info and will send it if I get it.

    The current model “fad” seems to be to pretty much totally assemble all of the model, then go back in and paint all the details afterwards. Wouldn’t it be easier and more accurate to paint the parts individually that need to be different colors before assembling? I’m thinking assemble first and paint later is done in order to save time as it’s possibly faster to just paint bomb everything one color first.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each method has its pros and cons. One issue with painting first is having to remove paint from the gluing surfaces to ensure a good bond.
