When I first started playing Warthunder's German tree, this thing was a beast to say the least, it was hard to kill all of it's crew.
Chad 2C bis moment
All of the "land ship tanks" are beasts due to that.
The T-35 being the best of them, due to it having 3 separate guns that can keep firing even if one or two of them are knocked out.
But the Independent, Neubaufahrzeug, SMK and now the 2C Bis are just as beastly due to the massive amount of crew.
The LVT(A)(1) is a good runner up, with less crew, but it being in the tech tree certainly gives it a bonus.
(I would include the T-28, but since the crew are all so close, it tends to die easily compared to most of the other tanks listed here)

The "handle" on the Rheinmetall turret was almost certainly a radio antenna. That style was found on light command tanks made by Russia and Japan. In the pre-war period Germany worked with Russia to design tanks, so it's not surprising to see an antenna that might have been influenced by theirs on that vehicle. After the war began, it was more common for the Germans to use rectangular bed-frame style antennas.

There was a picture of this tank in my 6th grade history book. Weird that the only pictures of german tanks in that history book was this and a King Tiger.

My history classes in middke school and high school rarely even got as far as WWII. We'd start a little before the American Revolution, then get bogged down with the Civil War and Reconstruction basically till the end of the year. Think WWII got covered once in 11th grade and we went through the whole thing in a single day!
As a German, I have a slight correction to make: Neubaufahrzeug can mean both "new construction vehicle" and "vehicle from new construction (method)". Considering the context of this vehicle, the latter is likely closer to the intent of the designers.

I disagree, because the new in "new construction vehicle" here would be referring to the construction, due to how compound words work. If you wanted to call something a new vehicle for use in construction, you would call it "Neues Baufahrzeug" to make clear that the new-ness refers to the property of being a vehicle and not to the construction.

Such a badass looking tank, is the handle on the turret perhaps an antenna as well like on some older soviet tanks?
No, its a hand grip for the crew to help them get in and out of the turret hatches. On the Panzer 3 and 4 theyre bent over so theyre less visually prominent

Sad to hear about Panzer Tracts going out of business, but to be honest it's pretty much been on life support since T.Jenz's death in 2012. I believe the company only published two additional books without him in the following decade (PT 8-1 Sturmpanzer-IV & PT 4-2 Pzkpfw-IV H, J). By comparison, when Jentz was the lead researcher, the publisher produced a book a year on average from the mid-90s until his death.
The method the site used for ordering is also quite outdated which likely didn't help. Hopefully we see some reprints from another source for people who want to buy them.

I'd read that there was a photo of five of these vehicles in Norway, with the heading of 'German heavy tanks.' This caused consternation among the Allies, who didn't realize that this comprised the entire run of the vehicle. Not to mention that they weren't very heavy.
(I'd hate to take on a Matilda or Char B in one.)
Hi Cone, personally I would not have translated "Neubaufahrzeug" with "construction vehicle", as the intention in german would probably be translated to "Newly built vehicle". I might be completely wrong tho and the intention may have been completely different.

That might have been their intention, but the name would still be read by probably 99% of all German speakers as construction vehicle.
@@DatAlien A "construction vehicle" is a "Baufahrzeug". We know our compound nouns, so 99% of Germans would scratch their head, as "Neubaufahrzeug" isn't a common German word and most likely know only to those that are interested in armored vehicles like we all here.

Few years ago German government invented and promoted the idea that Germany was the first victim of WW2... so clearly 50 years more and we will be hearing how Germany was attacked by Poland, oh sory i forgot that i am reading this type of German comments very often...😅
That tank and others are just a solid prove that the idea of starting another world war did not came into heads of German government in 1933 when the new party was instaled by popular vote -> and plans of "the fight" was published by this party leader 10 years before Germans choiced him as their beloved leader...
Also i love how in German schools they hardly teach kids anything about the war, only how German citizens were manipulated and other bs. excuses.
I believe that the British and French did something akin to a weapons exchange, Boyes anti-tank rifles for Hotchkiss 25mm. Now that was a side bar note in a photographic history of WW2 series of books I had a few of... so consider that as "source suspect". Certainly seen images of British using the Hotchkiss in France and even in North Africa (usually Portee as they were apparently too delicate for truck tow). However I have never seen any use of the Boyes by the French before the Fall of France and scant few of Free French units using them.
The Brithish units fighting in this area in Norway had only Boys anti-tank rifles.
One of the tanks lost a bogey(as showed in one of the pictures) and was dragged back to the railway station of Moelv, Norway - where I live…..

Looks like a pair of wheel sets (4-wheels per bogey) on a swingarm with a big ol' coil spring above each bogey but _not_ mounted to the same place as the swingarm.
You can kind of see the transition to the Pz3's torsion bars in this design by changing the springs.

The Neubaufahrzeug saw combat in Gudbrandsdalen in Norway, a place where I am currently living.
There is a well researched book by a Norwegian author that details the entire battle of Gudbrandsdalen and the book also lists the fate of all of the Neubaufahrzeug tanks that saw deployment here.
The book is called "kampene i Gudbrandsdalen 1940" (The battles in Gudbrandsdalen 1940) and it's highly recommended, even if it is in Norwegian.
From what I can remember from the book, at least 3 were destroyed in combat here.
The german wiki article on the Neubaufahrzeug is pretty detailed re its service in Norway. The 3 Tanks were organized as Panzerzug Horstmann (named after the Commander Oberleutnant Horstmann) and subordinated to Panzerabteilung z.b.V. 40. They were unloaded in Oslo and attached to the 196. Infanterie Division but used sparingly as they could be penetrated by british anti-tank rifles. Tank No. 8 was the one hit in the battle at Kvam on 23 April 1940 by french 25mm Hotchkiss guns used by the British. The tank was hit twice by 25mm fire, one through the gun mantlet, the other hit the driver, killing him. The commander, Feldwebel Faulhaber, was killed by british machine gun fire while abandoning the tank. You can see the inscription "Feldw. Faulhaber 23.4.40" on the tank ab 7:04. It was a short lived tradition in the Panzerwaffe to comemmorate fallen comrades like this. While Kampfgruppe Pelengahr managed to win the battle and rout the enemy, Tank No. 8 could not be recovered and was blown up. Tank No. 9 was apparently extremely unreliable and usually out of action while tank No. 10 was involved in several more combats and ran over a british staff car while leading light tanks of z.b.V. 40. Sadly the wiki article has no direct footnote for the combat narrative. One other interesting thing is that there seem to be several sources claiming that either one or both remaining tanks were converted to Flakpanzers later, one by the SS Nordland division in Romania, the other was in Gdynia.
Did you know that you can still see a few remains of the tank destroyed in Kvam in a small military museum in Norway?

I always find them quite easy to knock out. And I usually play M3 Stuarts.
@@c3aloha While its armor is pretty weak (Like pretty much any other multi-turreted tank, except SMK), even the M2A2 could pen it, its firepower is so amazing that it can delete the entire neemy team without needing to take breaks to hide and reload.
Its gun arrangement also makes it easy to fire over cover, which is one of the most fun wasy to use the short 75mm. The short 75mm alone makes for really good armament, (very powerful APCBC, high pen HEAT and very short reload) but it also has the 37mm, which has better velocity.

The British did use the French 25mm ATG, which they reciprocated by supplying the French with Boys ATRs, as the French lacked any ATRs. There are photos of British troops training on the 25mm ATG post Dunkirk, so some must have been kept back in the UK and not all were lost at Dunkirk.

@4:05 While not definitive evidence to clear the issue up, early Soviet tanks (T-26, T-28, and T-35 most especially) had similar "halo" shaped bars around the top of the turret on vehicles that had a radio to serve as an antenna that would not obstruct the commander's view or the turning of the turret. Given that, as stated in the Großtraktor video, the Germans would partner with the Soviets to run tank schools, among other things, it is very likely that this is either a shared or convergent design to serve the same role, namely the radio aerial for the Rheinmetall NbFz. On the Krupp turret shown afterwards, the radio antenna is a "whip"-style mounted at the aft-left of the main turret instead.

I have an older history book that has a picture of one of these in the downtown area of a Norwegan city. I was not able to identify this German tank until I saw your video. I assumed it was a prototype vehicle deployed in the invasion because it was expendable, as it was a chancy endevour.

hey COA, can you do a video of the romanian tanks of ww2? they were a pretty light tank force by all means, but their marasel mare tank was very influential in german AT tank designs with its sloped armor, and i think a video would be cool

The Model 35 antitank rifle (Karabin przeciwpancerny wzór 35, abbreviated "kb ppanc wz. 35") was a Polish 7.9 mm anti-tank rifle used by the Polish Army during the 1939 invasion of Poland. It was designated model 35 for its design year, 1935: It was also known by its codename "Uruguay" and by the name of its designer, Józef Maroszek.
Considering that this rifle was able to penetrate 33mm of armor from distance of 100mm at 30 deg angle, the thicknes of this heavy tank 20mm armor plates would be not effective years before the WW2 even started as that rifle would be able to penetrate its strongest plate from 250m and from that range the tank crew would not be able to spot the shooter hiden in some bush or a trench...
In 1939 against German tanks this 7.9mm rifle was also very good at making shots into the gap betwen the turret and the main tank body and by doing so the tank was lossing its ability to travers its turret...
If I may suggest another tanks for Cursed by Design, how about Polish 10TP and 14TP. First one was cursed by the concept of cruiser, lightly armoured tank on Christie suspension. Second, being much more practical design, was mainly crippled by problems with getting suitable engine. Both had problems casued by the finances, industrial limitations and geopolotical position of Poland as well.

Multi turret tanks may be bad, but what are your thoughts on multi gun, such as the two guns next to each other in the same turret or say Churchill style being one turret and one casemate.

Those turret handles I believe are an early radio antenna. Similar is seen on the command tanks of the soviet forces

I think the concept has some potential to work with modern tech. Specifically in the form of automated small machine gun turrets (by small, I mean their tops being like 2 inches above the hull, so that the main turret is not impeded by them). The turrets could be automatic with various sensors, and one of the crew could basically be notified when it sees what it thinks is a target, and then give the yes or no at firing at it. If the gun chosen is accurate/powerful enough for the task, there could also be an automatic setting for small, high velocity objects in an attempt to use them as point defense too.
the earlier varients of the marder 1 had a small mg turret ontop of the infantry compartment (which I think was controlled by the mounted infantry)

Dude finally a video on the Nb.Fz. I love the aesthetics of this vehicle and I'm glad it's gotten the attention it deserves. I made a Lego one a while back and despite trying to capture it's angles the best that I could, people couldn't figure out what this was. Many mistook it as a Panzer IV, and even though it did have some part in it's development, it still infuriates me. Thank you for educating the masses.

One of the wackiest things to exist from early German tank designs. I love this thing in real life and War Thunder, it's crazy what the development was like. I'd have to say the reason the (A) variant of the turret was probably not used due to the over-under gun design. I'd think (imo) that the over under would be harder to load since the 37 is over the 75, instead of the loader more or less sitting behind the 37 beside the 75, having an easier time getting to them. Idk, could be wrong but that seems more fair.

I personally believe that they've (the Germans) could have developed a better heavy tank from this design if they took off the other turrets, increased the engine hp and added more armor. Just my two cents.

This tank always interesteded me when i first read about it when I was 12 in a library book about tanks i took for school.
Always thought it was the most reasonable multi turreted and gunned tank designed during that time,but like most tanks like it it was unpractical and designed for the wrong war.
It's fun to play in warthunder and designing it in hoi4 and it actually working is fun too,i would love to see a working version in a museum more then something like the maus or other fucked up German tanks.
I remember hearing a couple years ago that one of these vehicles had its main armament replaced with a 12.8cm Howitzer.

I saw some mention of that as well but I think it's people confusing it with the Sturer Emil. One site I saw mentioned the NbFzs may have been scrapped around the time the Sturer Emil was being built. That could have caused some confusion with people assuming they reused the hulls when in reality the hulls they used were from a different vehicle entirely
