Panzer IV Ausf H Ammunition carrier (Academy 1/35 scale model)

  • In this video I build and modify the old Academy 1/35 Panzer IV Ausf H kit into a Panzer IV ammunition carrier. These ammunition carriers were not official vehicles but were typically converted from older vehicles that were no longer combat serviceable. You can find a decent Panzer IV kit here: www.hlj.com/search/?q=panzer+...
    The modifications consist of the removal of the turret, a simple 'wooden' panel made from styrene to replace it, and a simple carry rack on the rear deck made from brass rod.
    I also do some basic weathering using AK interactive acrylic and enamel products.

    Nicely done. Really great build. The Germans did use Panzer IV turrets as "Panzerturm", as well as spare/extra, or old, turrets from Panthers, Panzer III's, 38(T)'s, and just about anything else, so there's great scope for using that Panzer IV turret as a fixed installation. Cheers!

      In one instance a German tank service crew actually put a Panzer turret on a Panther hull. Not sure of the reason why but there's a tank in World Of Tank based off of it.

    Once again some fantastic tips and tricks. the phone shot sequencing , i found a tad to fast to actually see the glue process effectively .. Whereas , the subject matter i found fascinating and thought provoking... The finished article was excellent . i thank you for the hours of work these productions must take. truly grateful. ATVB . Thanks for the feedback Scott, I really appreciate it. If I do that again I'll try to shoot it slower (I can always speed it up in editing, but slowing it down can't recreate the missing frames). I'll try to find a way of getting closer to the action too.

    I enjoyed the fast sequence at the beginning as it really gave a different perspective to seeing the build without the slower step by step process which lasts for half the YT full build. I think we are all attuned to how armour models are built so I find that more focus on the other stages usually gives me more tips and technique advice (my opinion only!). Great job with the modification, the painting, weathering and commentary. Your work is always something to look forward to so thanks.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Robbo. I think you summed it up nicely - the steps for many armour builds are mostly the same, but I don't want to skip them completely. That's why I want to do more dioramas too, because I feel like they are a bit more varied. But I need to wait until I'm in my new place before making any more dioramas.

    Awesome build!!!! Nice to see something "different". As for the gun cleaning rods, you can always tell people that this ammo carrier also carries the gun cleaning rods and lends them out to other tank crews who may have had theirs lost/damaged, that way the tank crews can clean their main guns while being replenished with ammo at the same time.

    I'm in the "something else" camp on the hyper video. Some YT modelers take viewers through every step, repetitive or not, with agonizing detail on each nub of flashing and anecdotes from other builds.
    I hate that. We've mostly all assembled wheel sets and so forth and seeing that whiz by was almost ASMR. ;>)
    I will agree that the camera seemed a bit too far to see much detail but again, we've all seen and done the basics of builds before- you struck a fair balance between us seeing what you were doing and you seeing what you were doing without having to work around the camera, and knowing we were speeding toward the modifications helped. I don't mind missing watching you fuss and fiddle with the difficult buts at all.
    All that said, terrific way to adapt a kit that didn't satisfy you and didn't inspire you to go full superdetail by first having to fix gaps. The turret hole cover looks convincing and you got just enough cargo in the rack to be believable.
    Looking forward to seeing the turret repurposed in a diorama.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback Mark - lots of food for thought there. I'm basically thinking along the same lines: if you've seen one lot of road wheels go on, you've probably seen them all :) I'll experiment a bit more with the camera in some future videos.

    A good video and a nice build. I like the speeded up build sequence for straight fwd building. I think it is important to focus on any issues with kits so that people can be fore warned. These could be difficult build stages or inaccuracies. Also and painting techniques you wish to show off for people to get more from the finished product is gratefully received. I do a lot of mods to kits. I am currently making a Reno racer out of an old Tamiya Mustang kit.

    Your use of Hyper-lapse is properly used and acceptable.The painting of the hatch cover is very tasteful. But, the best is your recovery from the unacceptable turret. I really appreciate how a modeler can be honest and change on the fly as the model develops. Good show. The lack of camo gives it more stature as a work vehicle. My only critique is the tow cable, I would have liked to see it fabricated from real cable. Overall a great video and build and weather. Thanks for sharing your foray into the serendipitous nature of modeling. Cheers mate

    Nicely done mate !! And you can always use the other part as a fixed concrete gun position, i’ve did it in the past with a panther turret after using the panther body with a german quad flak attached to it (which is honestly still sitting two third finished after losing interest when waiting for some metal barrels for it, lol, as you do !!??, obviously it’s on the ‘to do list’ with several other of the usual ‘half finished’s’ that tend to crop up in a modellers life, where as the panther turret became a fixture of an Italian mid war dio,

      @@taco6658 I'm guessing the base coat came off once you started to use the thinners to blend the oil paints? You'll need to put down a gloss or semi-gloss varnish over the base coat to protect it first. I normally use a rattle can varnish from Tamiya or Mr Hobby.
