You are very wise to see the reality behind the videos and recordings, which by nature only capture parts of it. This one was an especially good video. I knew it was precious when it was happening, and I got to just as many shows as I could over 13 years until Jerry died. It was very profound; often an experience of group mind, and truly a better world. I am very lucky. But still, life moves forward, and there are some pretty amazing things happening today.

I can't imagine. I was born in 84 so too young lol. I really wish I had been about 10 years older to have seen them . I saw CSN open for Chicago in summer of 96 and it was my first real eye opening experience to hippies dancing along to the music. The vibe was really fun although it was a little shocking as an 11 yr old. Consider yourself lucky :)

I found the Dead when I got to high school in 1986. All my peers were listening to the hair metal of the day (Ratt, Poison, Motley Crue, Cinderella). Luckily, my buddy had an older brother who did the local community college's Dead Hour, playing bootlegs (cassettes, of course). Saw them 20+ times before Jerry passed. So thankful. The late 80s shows to me are precious. Brent was a force, and his Dear Mr. Fantasy vocals always raised goose bumps on me. RIP Jerry and Brent.

I was at this show... Foxboro a week before, Giants Stadium for two shows after this one. Great time and all, but the interesting thing was when a friend showed up after the Summer Tour was over... she said they played Bid You Goodnight at the last show. We all thought that was interesting, why bring such a random old tune back? They used to sing it all the time back in the early days. But then October hit and we heard about some secret shows in Hampton - The Warlocks! We all know what happened then... I have just always thought the spark that lit up the resurgence of the “old tunes” in late 89 started this summer, with that Bid You Goodnight.

Anyway, during intermission, and I say this with humor, not making fun but...on top of the hill where the washrooms were? This one male fan was so blitzed out of his freaking mind, he lifted his arms up over his head , looked up towards the sky and declared: "I BELIEVE IN GOD! I BELEIVE IN GOD"! It was so.....godamn....funny! If I were that high...I'd believe in God too. LOL! 🤣🤣🤣

Jerry's tone is so very underrated. It fits perfectly in the mix in what is a large band with lots of stuff happening. And so unique; just like SRV or BB King, I can hear one note and instantly know that it's Jerry. The man got me to actually embrace the tonal options of things like coil splitting and using pickup selections that I never used before. In terms of Jerry's tones through the years, him on an SG in the late 60s is fuckin great for the primal psychedelic sound, then his gator strat in the early 70s was also fresh and unique. Wolf is probably my favorite Jerry tone, but the later years like this one are easily up there too. As time went on over the course of 30 years, Jerry's tone (and playing) just got more and more refined to perfection. This here is honestly the tone I think of when I think about Jerry tone. So damn nice.

This is probably the tightest they ever sounded. not saying it was their best or most exploratory. But my God those vocals.and harmonies are perfect. The arrangements and all the changes are perfect. They were a well-oiled machine on this tour and firing on all cylinders. Jerry's voice is especially impressive. He's projecting a lot, really going for it. Hiting all the right notes. Plus all his clever little bends he's doing on the low string, almost trying to emulate a.trombone. They're so unique.

Is this song relevant anymore? My take on it was this was about the early change in consciousness that took place in the mid-,sixties; when society went from 1950's conformity to the mind expansion and rebellion and creativity of the 60's. The Sixties cast a long influence over society, and the forces of reaction have been working to tamp it down ever since. But now we're in a new era, and the Sixties seem like a long, long time ago.
