"Usually a show-opener in its last 20 years in the setlist, this version from RFK 1989 was played as the third song of the first set, always fun to see the Dead mix things up from the usual setlist format." - David Lemieux
1989 was a great year for the Dead - crisp sound, bigger jams, and Jerry was lucid and creative. There are great shows throughout the 80s, but 87-89 were the best years with a peak in 89.
I was on most all spring summer tour dates in 90 did a lot of 89 too but that 90 was the eclipse it vaulted rose to the heavens then shattered in a billion pieces at the end of tour the world amp Tinley park was just a shit show i just knew something was in the air u could smell it from start of spring in md. cap ctr but 90 was pure fire,.... 87-90 93 was pretty great too 95 sucked balls in many ways
Easily one of my all time Mississippi.. just watching how Jerry starts smirking just past the 3min mark he knows he's gonna lay it all down. And Brent, Bobby and Mickey feel the love.. I'm sure Phil and Bill but the camera never made it too them unfortunately..
Camped out under some stairs, gf kicked me out, no clue what to do next, but....got my JBL n phone n it's 3:45am here in So. California n been listening to live Dead for last 4hrs...getting me through...the sun will shine on my backdoor someday.....March winds gonna blow all my troubles away
This song comes to mind.. every time I find myself in a boat, canoe, or floating down stream in an innertube.. just start singing "across the Rio Grand Dio... across the lazy river...."
35 yrs ago today....we were being blessed by the grateful dead ... acrossss the rioooo grandio.......best of times ..brent so sick on the keys mmmmmm-mmmmmm ...thanks for the memories guys !!! peace and jam on !!!!!! into eternity!!!!!!!!
Less than a year old when this show was filmed but owe finding/loving this band to my father who introduced my sister and I when we were toddlers as we cruised around in his K-car with skull sticker in the back window. Beautiful memories of a simpler time but what’s even more beautiful is that we still share those moments. Music like this transcends time even though Jerry and Brent are gone.
I heard they were firing on all cylinders on that 89 tour from people that have seen them live since the 70s. Lucky you man, any anecdotes from that show or maybe other shows from that tour?? Bet the Acid was fantastic hehe. Thank God (and GD of course HA) for these incredible recordings.
@@fungus_am0nguz644 the alpine Valley shows were a great time .even the year when it rained cats and dogs. Everything was soaked but when the band came out the clouds parted . it was beautiful.
Was watching a Mississippi State baseball game the other day and a kid hit a dinger to right field and there's a huge stealie and tie dye off in right field. And I smiled and smiled. And I thought.....Mississippi Half Step!!!! Chills. Weir everywhere! Much love everyone.
When the tempo changes in Mississippi to the 2nd half of the tune.. Easy to see why it's such a fan favorite. Jerry's solos could inspire the Dead to raise. Especially in Mississippi. I love feeling that build up of inspiration as the song progresses. I love the GD but, honest to God, Jerry was in a world all his own. His final solo.. can't describe. God like.
Slowly slipping away, that’s Putting it gently. I started watching the Dead in 91 and it feels like a different lifetime for me. Unfortunately The music died with Jerry.
@@jdietz8026 I try to be optimistic in regards to time. However I think the music died with Brent's passing. My last show was in the spring of 92 in Philly. The set list was great the playing was not. I left the Spectrum with a broken heart knowing that it was over. Phil said at that time that the band was running on inertia & he was right.
6:55, 7:36, 7:50? Hot damn! Umm, nice? No! Umm, damn, sweet? Idk!! Something!! 8:05-8:16, Mickeys face starts to melt from all the nice sweet music going on!!! Btw, I was 4th row at this show! Nice, sweet vibes in the lot, the show, the music, obviously, the WHOLE DAMN THING!!! OH FOR JUST ONE MORE LIKE THAT, ESPECIALLY THESE DAYS!!!
I used to see Rock and Rye in every Wisconsin bar I went into. I finally found a bottle of it in my local Walmart. It’s Rye Whiskey with Rock Candy some orange, spices and bitters, Pour it over ice and add a Cherry and you have an Old Fashion.
Man how I remember this summer tour I just turned 21 drinking age in most states. My how I wish I could do it all again! Not that drinking was my thing
Thanks Dave! This is awesome...Jerry's playing is awesome, of course, but what really hit me was the strength of his voice! The way he was holding the notes extra long at the end of some of the phrases was really cool...
A little LIG tease at the start. I love seeing the band having fun. The Brent reaction to the 3rd "On My Waaaay" 4:09 is priceless. We got to see Dylan play a bit on the last night at the Forum run on Feb 12. It was our final time at the Greek and Frost. I got a birthday show at their single Oakland Arena show Dec 6th (that really was for my birthday wasn't it? Or maybe for Grahame's 3rd birthday?). 89' was a fun year for sure. Then again I look back and say that about every year since my first on 12/31/79. Every year is like a bottle of good wine. Each year has it's nuances and uniqueness that individually makes each special. What year I want to listen to greatly depends on my mood (or the acid). I would never say one is better, just different or stranger.. and I am thankful for every minute of it all!!!
The year was 1830...me and the boys had come out to finish the transcontintental railroad....we were pretty broke by then but Clem did have some of them soundboard tapes....we had ourselves a grand old time by promontory point, as obadiah drove in that last spike....why, we even had some of that there Utah gold, and some shine....weed, shine, and some fiery Utah gold.

How come Terrapin crossroads was enforcing the vaccine mandates? Do t think Jerry would approve…… ✌️

Hello David, DO I see Une petite pue Francais IN you?
Amen man
There's no question in my mind that the Brent Mydland era was the greatest era of the Grateful Dead. He really brought out the best in Jerry.
Of course Brent did bring the best of Jerr... you know what I mean!!
Agreed
💯
1989. The best of the 30 years.
Yes

Couldn't agree more. Spring 90 gets a lot of love for obvious reasons but to my ears summer '89 was the absolute peak of late era GD.
'83-'85 smoke '87 and '88 imo, '89 was in a league of it's own though

we will, have faith. and if we can't, have more faith.
Retread to my feet and pray for better weather
We will there's a jear bear on the moon waiting for us remember? Lmao
Just saw them in atlanta last night. Magical
If people stop enabling all the bs we will!
Came to this after hearing of Bill Walton's passing.....and I'm glad I did. Much love to Dead Nation, Much love indeed.
exactly what all of us need on this fine day

I was born on the day of this show
Did your daddy sit down and cry?
Me too
How old ru?
That first verse is one of the finest written in all of rock music
Robert Hunter a true genius
Could not be denied!!
Hah! I was thinking the same thing about the second verse!
Vocalist smiles mid-3rd verse before the "cue-ball's made of styrofoam" line. I'd guess he's reflecting on how great the words are too.
i'm lost for words to say how good this is
This is the era of Dead I grew up with.

The late 80s Alpine shows were so good!
Good times!!!
Thank you Grateful Dead for reminding me what life was like back in the day....
Good ol Grateful Dead.. always brings a smile to my face ☺️
Jerry Brent was the most dynamic amazing thing to watch
I just finished watching a 77 Mississippi with Bill really enthusiastic and pushing Jer. Very different dynamic for sure..
Brent was my favorite keyboard player for the Dead
Today's my mom's birthday. Couldn't be more grateful for her, and these guys, and most all of you out there. 🤙❤️

How can you not smile when Jerry has that guitar in his hands?
Aint it the truth??
goddamn Jerry and Brent were both so good on this one - as usual from 87-90
True and Brent doesn't often get the appreciation he deserves.
@The People’s Stick So sad. They are both gone now. Great to have these videos though.

Nice. Jerry's playing was steller on the Summer tour. Saw 3 dates including this one. Brings happy memories of a time slowly slipping away.
Sadly it does feel that way..
We can keep this train moving 💪

I’m 48, I was probably of the last of the dead heads to catch on. Or peoples my age that got to went to the concerts. Time is a crazy thing.
My typing is brutal, sorry. I got to see the last show and it wasn’t pretty but I’m glad I was there. End of an era…
Beautiful version of one of my favorite dead songs ever
An amazing version 🍄👠🍄🌍🍄🌹🍄

i started following the boys in 89...things got kind of rocky after that but that year was magic!
As was 90, 91, 92, 93, 94 and 95. Pure Joy. And magic.
