I think you should understand the time period in USA when this song was written, performed and produced. It was 1972. At that time there was a giant chasm of distrust between the "older generation" and the young folks who were part of the so called counter culture. The war in Vietnam was still going on and young "hippies" like Neil Young (although he's Canadian) were regarded with great suspicion and distrust as I said before. Young wrote this song with that generational/cultural divide in mind - he is telling the old man that he isn't so different - there is a lot more the old man and the young man hold in common than that which differs in each...there is an allegorical undertone to the lyrics of this song. The young man is telling the "old man" that just like him, he has hopes and dreams and a need to be loved and a potential for promise to see those things and to experience them and to NOT go to a meaningless battlefield in some far off land and to sacrifice all of his potential - his life - his future for "nothing" or for "no good or worthy reason.
Nothing wrong with samples in Neil has used them. He really embraced technology and varied studio techniques. You sound like a bitter old person the same person you desilked when older generations said you music was trash and don't think they didn't.
@3:34 you can see you see his intelligence in arrangement and you're impressed. I happened to see Neil many times in concert, but it was always kind of by accident; Not that I didn't like him, but it was late in his career and it was just the concert that was available when my friends and I returned back to our home town for vacations. Every time, I found myself more and more grounded by his performances, even when he was trying to be abusive of the audience (yes he would do that). He has a musical arrangement genius that bridges something in folk and something in adjacent genres that is really striking. I will always stop what I'm doing to listen to this song and a couple of others by him. A special talent.
If you'd like another song by him Emma, I would try "Hurricane" but it will be difficult to choose the right version. I would go with an earlier version. "Heart of Gold" is often considered one of his best vocals, but it's quite a bit 'on the nose' in arrangement.
Neil Young is one of the greats in Rock-N-Roll. Apart from being part of Crosby, Stills Nash, & Young, he has been performing for decades. He has many amazing and beautiful songs. Please react to more Neil Young.
Great song to start your Neil Young journey! I Luv this song! Other song to listen to by NY are: Heart of Gold & Harvest Moon to start. Thanks Emma ❤️💛
I agree Emma, his voice is warm and soft, but also bright and clear. He doesn't mumble- you can hear all the words. One of the most unique and distinct voices in Pop music. Yes, Neil was only 24 at the time but already mature and weathered.
The music of Neil Young has inspired and influenced many talented artists and groups that came after him. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alanis Morrisette just to name a few. He’s the “ godfather of grunge “.
Neil Young has always been under-rated as a composer and singer. He still has millions of fans around the world. I like his songs because they all have a story to tell. Good reaction Emma!
First time I heard this song, thanks to my brother Herb RIP. I am now 64. Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Young live. In around 1998. Awesome experience
I have the greatest respect for somebody who can sing a song and play the guitar and make it so good you remember that forever. It is so hard to pull off and not many can do it well like Neil. Great song, great picking and unique voice. Another awesome video Emma!
Years ago Neil was in a band called Buffalo Springfield and he wrote and sang a song called Expecting To Fly . It is a hauntingly beautiful song and sends shivers down my spine even now.
YES EMMA, HE SAID 24 AND SO MUCH MORE DEAR! 😊SO THIS IS FROM BACK IN ( 70 ) EMMA, A GREAT BBC SHOW CONCERT💯 AND NOWWWWW NEIL'S THE OLD MAN, YIKESSSS!😮HE HAS A HUGE CATALOG OF SONGS JUST LIKE ( ELTON JOHN ) SAME THING, HUNDREDS OF SONGS, ANOTHER SONG FROM THIS SHOW WAS : HEART OF GOLD, YOU'LL SEE NEIL SING, PLAY GUITAR AND ALSO HARMONICA👍HOPE YOU GET TO DIG INTO NEIL'S SUPER AWESOMEMUSICAL WORKS EMMA! CYA GIRL!
Nothing better for chilling/relaxing... Neil: solo, w/ guitar/piano/organ & harmonica. Routinely stream an old 92 PBS-WTTW Center Stage show when walking the dog in the preserve & enjoying nature.
When CSNY played at MSG in 2000, it was a sold out show, and i was bummed, at first. I drove for a Taxi company at the time and was playing some Neil Young, while taking people all over northern NJ. I picked up a regular customer who would tell me she had seats to the CSNY show at the garden, but she could not attend. I snatched them up right away. Of course she did not have to pay anything for the cab trip or the following one. A great trade for excellent music.
Neil is now 78, and the album Harvest, that features this song, came out in 1972, so that would have made him 25 or 26. in fact the big surprise is that this performance was on color video tape, not 16 mm black and white film, or cave painting. I would imagine he still performs this from time to time, because he enjoys the irony. My favorite is a Crosby, Stills song called Teach Your Children, which has a timeless message on mentorship.
Thank you Emma, that was a truly beautiful, warmhearted and poignant reaction; And as you always do Emma, a nice and respectful explanation of the building blocks of the Song mixed in, and I much appreciate your input as it helps a philistine like myself discern the music that little bit more; It just goes to show that a top-notch artiste can deliver a great performance with just an Acoustic guitar or say a piano and the set pared right back and raw talent. And lastly, how do you manage to always look so drop dead gorgeous, and captivating. 🥰❤👍🤟👏🎵🎶🎙🎤💐.
A favorite. Song, and reaction. Song I've been listening to, and playing, for many years. I've seen Neil perform twice. Both times very different: The solo on stage with guitars and an upright piano Neil, and the loud, rocking Neil with a tight, energetic group. Your reaction is, as usual, genuine and insightful. Thanks for all this. :)
You know most of the time, I believe most of us, including serious Neil Young fans would probably say that he has a unique voice and they like it in that respect, but that he doesn't really have what you'd normally call a 'good' voice. However, in this performance, I think he sounds pretty darn great. Nice phrasing and warmth on the verses, and belting it out beautifully and with a lot of great expression and strength in the choruses. IMO, maybe his best vocal performance ever? Maybe his voice was kind of at a peak at round this time of his career? Anyway, pretty impressive I think.
I have always said that you can discern the true masters when they are stripped down to the very basics and are still fantastic. Neil Young is still performing to this day.
What Neil has! great stuff: rust never sleeps, sugar mountain, heart of gold, cowgirls in the sand (my fav), four dead in ohio, like a huricane , and more. play em all!
Great reaction, Heart of Gold, Southern Man, Harvest Moon, and "The Needle and the Damage Done" are just a few great ones . There are many others. He also was a part of "Crosby , Stills, Nash , and Young", who had many great hits.
Stumbled upon this reaction video by accident enticed by this old favourite song.I'm a Yes fan but I took a leap in the dark for Harvest(also After the Gold Rush)and was richly rewarded. You have a lovely voice for nighttime radio!
Neil was also a member of Buffalo Springfield (with Stephen Stills). Stephen Stills went on to be part of the group Crosby, Stills & Nash (with David Crosby from the Byrds and Graham Nash from the Hollies) for their self-titled debut album in 1969, and then Neil Young joined them for a couple years, so it was Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for the albums 'Deja Vu' (1970) and the live album "4-Way Street" (1971). Great, great music and some of the best vocal harmonies *ever* ... 👍😁
When I was a kid, this song always made me shed a tear , I never had my Dad in my life at all! my mom raised me and it wasnt til I was about 12 years old that my mom Met a guy that was what I can only say the man that raised me, the hole in my life was somewhat never filled But he tried and He taught me some very Valuable Lessons in Life all while I was still a lil Know it all! Shitstain to him, I learned to listen a lot! and we worked together for many years up until he retired and passed! I look back and cherish the Memory of him and always being there for me! Thank you A.T. Im an Old man now! and much like you were!
Solo Neil Young is a sweet country performer, but band Neil Young was at first a lead rock guitarist, then part of the legendary Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young......but always the crazy front man for Crazy Horse. To be blown away by the crazy Neil, react to the live Crazy Horse performance of Hey Hey My My ( rock n roll will never die ). The video with the young girl ( looks like a future nun ) banging her head into the stage in time to Neils guitar solo. lol
That was a lovely breakdown of a true legend's voice. I've seen this video many times and off course, on the iconic Harvest album. Apart from some CSNY songs, I'd never really heard of Neil Young, by brother got me into him, playing this and other songs from NY on his acoustic to me. He tried to teach me some of Neil's chords but I was rubbish. I repaid bruv at least for introducing me to the great man, by taking him to see Neil headlining a festival, here in the UK.
Since you enjoyed Neil's performance so much and are interested in learning about his other songs that were as good or better. Than the next one I recommend you look beyond his solo stuff when it comes to finding out the amount of product that is out there for instance, he was 1 of the members of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Which he was exceptional in. And of course, let's not forget his group Crazy Horse where he did some of his best work also.
Good selection. Neal Young has a distinctive voice and a distinctive music catalog. You must also find Crosby, Sills, Nash, and Young for the most angelic harmonies you may ever hear!
Neil could write a touching song about anything or anybody. He wven wrote one of his prettiest ballads about Richard Nixon, a man who he despised and sang about in negative light several times. You should check that song out and be the first TH-cam reactor to do so. Its called Campaigner. He saw Nixon crying on TV after his wife had a stroke, and wrote a pretty sympathetic aong about it. He was really moved by the real emotion he saw from a guy who had been barely human in his eyes. He later said "I guess i felt sorry for Nixon that night".
One part of Neil's voice is sometimes described as a human embodiment of a lonesome timber wolf. He is a great teller of tales in song. One of his most harrowing is Needle and the Damage Done - and that album (Tonight's the Night) is a sustained emotional roller-coaster.
He has so many good songs. Every song in it is excellent. One of my favourites not on the album is Powderfinger. For more from Harvest I would recommend The Needle and the Damage Done, and the song Heart of Gold
I remember watching this concert as it was broadcast on BBC in the 70's. We still had a black and white telly at the time! But must shout out for the BBC for such superb quality sound over 50 years ago.
Loved your reaction. I've been listening to this song and Neil Young's music since I was 15 or 16 years old. (I'm 68 now.) This song has become my anthem the last few years. I listen to it often and never tire of it. Listen to his song, 'Love in Mind.'
Neil Young, Canadian, friend and contemporary with Joni Mitchell. You can hear the Canadianess in his voice. Was part of the group Crosby Stills Nash and Young, famous for their harmonies.
He was a great singer and song writer. I have another singer on here named Micheal Kotik. I have known him since 1972. Last year his daughter put sone of his music he wrote and a couple of cover songs on here Pull him up and see what you thing. It will show up as, A mix of Micheal Kotik, Just use his name, there is only a Polaroid Pic of him and his wife. Back in the day. Ya we are old. I was home on leave from VN, and Micheal had just got out of the service. If anything check him out. I sang with him my last 6 yrs on stage, 10 years ago.
The Neil Young album I listened to the most (by far) when I was a kid is called "Live Rust" (1979). It's like a live greatest hits double LP. Side One: 1. Sugar Mountain 2. I am a Child 3. Comes a Time 4. After the Goldrush 5. My My, Hey, Hey (out of the blue) I listened to side one over and over (and over!) when I was a kid. Side One is part of the acoustic set, later in the concert is the electric set 😁 Other great songs from the same album: The Loner Needle and the Damage Done Lotta Love Powderfinger Cortez the Killer Cinnamon Girl Like a Hurricane Hey Hey, My My (into the black) These songs are all greatest hits, and there are lots more, he couldn't fit them all on one album or in one concert. His first 'official' Greatest Hits album was called 'Decade', and it was a triple LP from 1977.
David Crosby (who was, after all, in one of the USA's greatest vocal groups with him) talked about meeting Neil and hearing him play 'a couple of the best songs I'd ever heard in my life'. I don't know how that struck the Canadian. He has a bit of a reputation for being grumpy and doing his own thing. But I think this song constitutes proof of concept.
OK I've watched a lot of reaction videos on TH-cam, Im a 63 year old guitarist who grew up playing and listening to all of these great bands, So it comes as a bit of a shock that no one has reacted to Brandi Carlisle's The Joke, it will change your life, so please do me and the world a favor and shine a light on her and this brilliant song!
I was 20 when this camd out. 72 now. Listening from both ends. Still incredible.
I'm only 45 but I was raised on this. Neil's lyrics are real poetry.

Actual musical talent.
No samples.
No auto tune.
No mush-mouth garbage.
Nothing wrong with samples in Neil has used them. He really embraced technology and varied studio techniques. You sound like a bitter old person the same person you desilked when older generations said you music was trash and don't think they didn't.
@@anthonyv6962 I wonder if he has Neil Young's 'Computer Age' album?
@3:34 you can see you see his intelligence in arrangement and you're impressed. Neil Young - an institution, a living legend. Great choice, Emma!
Greetings from Germany! ✌
Rüdiger, du hast es genau richtig beschrieben
Neil Young is one of the greats in Rock-N-Roll. Apart from being part of Crosby, Stills Nash, & Young, he has been performing for decades. He has many amazing and beautiful songs. Please react to more Neil Young.
Great song to start your Neil Young journey! I Luv this song! Other song to listen to by NY are: Heart of Gold & Harvest Moon to start. Thanks Emma ❤️💛
❤❤❤
And that gorgeous fingerpicking on the guitar! My college roommate used to play this all the time. Haunting. Your fellow Canadian!
Just him. His talent. His music. Neil and his guitar. It's really a special kind of awesome.
The GREAT, GREAT, GREAT Neil Young!!!
I agree Emma, his voice is warm and soft, but also bright and clear. He doesn't mumble- you can hear all the words. One of the most unique and distinct voices in Pop music. Yes, Neil was only 24 at the time but already mature and weathered.
I love how one singer with nothing but a guitar and their voice can be so entertaining. Great reaction!!!
Incredibly talented performer and a prolific songwriter. One of his more popular songs is
“Cinnamon Girl”
But he has MANY wonderful songs.
thanks
HEART OF GOLD and CINNAMON GIRL are a couple of his great songs.
In picking a " Cinnamon Girl " video I would suggest from the 1991 tour... all of the women are signing and dancing and having a grand ole time
Cinnamon girl but not wimpy bot top 40 AM TRASH....NEED his rock
@jaybo2023 great Idea...also need Southern Man from 4 way street where Stills and Young trade lead guitar instead of wimpy acoustic
The Great Neil Young
The music of Neil Young has inspired and influenced many talented artists and groups that came after him. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alanis Morrisette just to name a few. He’s the “ godfather of grunge “.
He as quite a few great songs!
Neil Young has always been under-rated as a composer and singer. He still has millions of fans around the world. I like his songs because they all have a story to tell. Good reaction Emma!
Twice in the R and R hall of fame . multiple grammies, junos etc. Rated second best living songwriter behind dylan.....Under rated, seriously?
First time I heard this song, thanks to my brother Herb RIP. I am now 64. Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Young live. In around 1998. Awesome experience

A Canadian icon. We all love and enjoy Neil. He has quite a list of hits, check him out. "Go Canada" !! :)

Wow! This song resonated with me as a 14 year-old. Now that I am an old man myself, it still resonates with me from the "other side".
Stop this is wimpy and way overplayed by the loser brigade....need Neil's ROCK DOWN BY THE RIVER
Neil is now 78, and the album Harvest, that features this song, came out in 1972, so that would have made him 25 or 26. in fact the big surprise is that this performance was on color video tape, not 16 mm black and white film, or cave painting. He performed it in London's Hyde Park, on the same bill as Dylan, just a few years ago.
It was 1972 not 1965. Everything was color by then. The song says 24 and there’s so much more, so he should’ve been 24 when he wrote it.
I use to run home to play my brothers record harvest & gold rush before he came home
It would of been made for a TV tapings thats why its video.
Oh the memories. I remember being 14 and I would put a transistor radio under my pillow and listen to this song on the radio.
Thank you Emma, that was a truly beautiful, warmhearted and poignant reaction; And as you always do

I was raised to Neil Young, he's my parents' favorite artist. Their wedding song is Harvest Moon.
Hi Emma! Great seeing you again, It's a great song I was in my teens when I heard it! 66 yo now!
Great reaction Emma! Neil has a large library of hits... Always looking forward to seeing more of you!
I have always said that you can discern the true masters when they are stripped down to the very basics and are still fantastic. Neil Young is still performing to this day.
CORTEZ THE KILLER,
DOWN BY THE RIVER,
and SOUTHERN MAN are waiting for you, Emma.
Keep going and enjoy the music.
Neil Young is an old man now. It's ironic when he sings it after the turn of the Century in 2000. Love you Neil!❤😊
What Neil has! great stuff: rust never sleeps, sugar mountain, heart of gold, cowgirls in the sand (my fav), four dead in ohio, like a huricane , and more. play em all!

Stumbled upon this reaction video by accident enticed by this old favourite song.I'm a Yes fan but I took a leap in the dark for Harvest(also After the Gold Rush)and was richly rewarded. You have a lovely voice for nighttime radio!
Sugar Mountain is a good one, but he has such a large catalog with many excellent songs! Oh and he is a Canadian
he is prolific! a case can be made that he has the largest music catalog ever!

So many songs he's got that will jus...blo u away.. under the word "talent" IS.. Neil Young
SO MANY songs. 😊 He blows a mean harmonica too.
I first saw Neil Young in London in 1973, the Eagles were the support band.
i was wondering if that was you.
all while also playing amazing complex guitar!
Since you enjoyed Neil's performance so much and are interested in learning about his other songs that were as good or better. This woman gave a most refreshing, professional review of this work, I’m not easily impressed but I am impressed now! Thank you 🙏
I agree with the other comments HEART OF GOLD, he's a great songwriter 👍🍀
Every time I hear this song reminds me of my grandpa the most hardest working man I ever known I miss him so much
One part of Neil's voice is sometimes described as a human embodiment of a lonesome timber wolf. He is a great teller of tales in song. One of his most harrowing is Needle and the Damage Done - and that album (Tonight's the Night) is a sustained emotional roller-coaster.
Its amazing how different people listen to music and what they pick up on. And how you explain it. Makes me hear things differently, kinda cool
Great reaction. Two for you. Heart of Gold and as someone mentioned Harvest Moon. You'll love them.
Can't wait!
My favourite day ever was going with my Da to one of his concerts❤
He has so many good songs. Every song in it is excellent. One of my favourites not on the album is Powderfinger. For more from Harvest I would recommend The Needle and the Damage Done, and the song Heart of Gold
Must hear the songs:"Hey hey,my my"and"My my ,hey hey".🤘
A singer and songwriter for more than 60 years. Perhaps even check on "Ohio" that he wrote as part of Crosby Stills Nash & Young.
I remember watching this concert as it was broadcast on BBC in the 70's. We still had a black and white telly at the time! But must shout out for the BBC for such superb quality sound over 50 years ago.
Thanks for the review. I started playing guitar around 1960 so I have grown with Neil. Maybe another song to rock you would be "Birds".
My live favorite is the whole album "Live Rust" from 1979. There's a acoustic and an electric session.
Love this video. Isn't it nice to see someone appreciate the music you grew up to? Harvest Moon is my choice for 2nd reaction.
Yes! Thank you!
Loved your reaction. I've been listening to this song and Neil Young's music since I was 15 or 16 years old. (I'm 68 now.) This song has become my anthem the last few years. I listen to it often and never tire of it. Listen to his song, 'Love in Mind.'
Another 70s classic, my sister's albums omg
You should hear the studio version with chorus wow, this song makes me cry for my old man every time.
Rocking in the free world great song also the needle and the damage very touching song
Hello Emma. Neil Young - Hey Hey, My My is a good song to react too!
Probably my favorite song of his. Excellent tune.
Neil Young, Canadian, friend and contemporary with Joni Mitchell. You can hear the Canadianess in his voice. Was part of the group Crosby Stills Nash and Young, famous for their harmonies.
Needle and damage done. His strum tempo is epic. Btw
Hi Emma~
Neil is unique
My favourite Neil Young song is Like a hurricane
Harvest Moon, in my opinion, should be your next listen. Thank you for appreciating his music.
Heart of Gold is a very popular one. Harvest Moon is beautiful. And Sugar Mountain is special.
There is so much more!!! His catalogue is large and 60 years old and he is still touring.
Love Neil

It will show up as, A mix of Micheal Kotik, Just use his name, there is only a Polaroid Pic of him and his wife. Back in the day. Ya we are old. I was home on leave from VN, and Micheal had just got out of the service. If anything check him out. I sang with him my last 6 yrs on stage, 10 years ago.
Guitar + voice
Brilliant artist.
Harvest Moon by Neil Young is a favourite of mine. Has a great promo film to go with it too.
Here’s an oldie of his, but definitely a Goldie. “Expecting to Fly” it’s from his days with
Buffalo Springfield.
First time! Wow. I grew up listening to this song. I'm not sure when my first time was probably an infant on the Ford LTD station wagon radio.
i love when you see folk songs heartwarming
Neil Young / Buffalo Springfield. Broken Arrow.
"Harvest Moon" and "Cinnamon Girl" are quite good, and "Ohio" with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
He said “24 and there’s so much more”. So he wrote this at 24
The Neil Young album I listened to the most (by far) when I was a kid is called "Live Rust" (1979). It's like a live greatest hits double LP.
Side One:
1. Sugar Mountain
2. I am a Child
3. Comes a Time
4. After the Goldrush
5. My My, Hey, Hey (out of the blue)
I listened to side one over and over (and over!) when I was a kid. Side One is part of the acoustic set, later in the concert is the electric set 😁
Other great songs from the same album:
The Loner
Needle and the Damage Done
Lotta Love
Powderfinger
Cortez the Killer
Cinnamon Girl
Like a Hurricane
Hey Hey, My My (into the black)
These songs are all greatest hits, and there are lots more, he couldn't fit them all on one album or in one concert. His first 'official' Greatest Hits album was called 'Decade', and it was a triple LP from 1977.
James Taylor-Fire and Rain- Live on BBC- DO IT!!!!!
ahh you are in for a treat. Beautiful performance.
One of the greatest songwriters, performers. Ever. His lead guitar work is emotionally brilliant.
Nope boring
Hello Emma, saw this when I was a kid! I knew then on how that he is a great vocalist!
