    If you wanna know more about Peter Gabriel, Emma, look for the progressive rock band Genesis from the begining . He was the lead vocal until 1975. Thanks for reacting to this music. You're the best!

    For a drummer like myself, what also stands out for me is the magnificient work of Manu Katché here, one of my favourite drummers (he's done great work for example with Sting as well). Just some super-tasty licks and fills everywhere, so rythmically intricate yet totally in the pocket, and it always feels effortless and never takes away the shine from anyone else. It always just adds to the whole, and his drumming becomes an absolutely necessary part of the performance. Whenever i see Manu Katché on drums, it's always exciting!

      Agree! Always in the pocket.

      Yep. He seems to be feeding something special into is soul. His phrasing is all his own and he glides through songs so dynamically. He never steps on toes and always serves the music with flavor. He's something to behold.

    • @loadedorygun
      @loadedorygun 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes yes! He’s so magnificently cocky. I watched an interview where the bandleader, can’t recall who, asked him almost audition style if Manu thought he could learn and handle the parts. Manu was almost incredulous in the retelling, saying something like “of course I can. That’s why I’m here and not someone else, for heaven’s sake.” And he backs it up. I think most of the verse is just hat and kick right? But then the chorus hits and those glorious off beat tom placements. So gorgeous. And then the subtle little rolls in the climax outro. A master.

    • @Mike500
      @Mike500 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@loadedorygun I head that when Sting was first looking for the right drummer for his solo album, they sat for dinner together, and Sting asked him why he would be the best man for the job. Manu picked up the cutlery from the table and drummed something on the table or whatever was in front of him. It was so good that Sting decided to invite him on the spot to be the drummer.

      ...and this was only her third or fourth show with Peter Gabriel. She was a music student who'd worked with one of Peter's recoding guys, and when Sinead O'Connor had to leave the tour because of a family emergency, she got a call. She was in Europe 2 days later and rehearsing. The rest, as they say, is history.

    • @gerstelb
      @gerstelb 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Paula Cole released her first solo album, “Harbinger,” just after finishing up this 1994 tour with Peter Gabriel. In fact, she was soon on the road again in 1995, opening for Sarah McLachlan (I saw her in Philadelphia in March). It’s too bad that her label, Imago, folded soon after that album was released; it got virtually no press or airplay. It’s very powerful; her song “I Am So Ordinary” will break your heart. (BTW, Sarah McLachlan got a lot of industry pushback for having a female opening act; traditional wisdom said that a female headliner needed a male opening act. This became her inspiration for starting the Lilith Fair.)
      On her second album, “This Fire,” she had 2 hit singles: “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” and “I Don’t Wanna Wait” (the theme song for the series “Dawson’s Creek). But those aren’t the best songs on the album. “Feelin’ Love” is *the* steamiest song you will ever hear, and Peter Gabriel does a guest duet on “Hush Hush Hush.” She won a couple Grammys, including Best New Artist, and was the first woman nominated for Producer of the Year.

    Okay, this was live 1993/94. But Peter also has a glorious past: Until 1975 he was frontman of a little band from Surrey, England named GENESIS. His successor was Phil Collins who until than “only” played the drums and did background vocals. I highly recommend you dive deeper into the world of Genesis, both Peter’s and Phil’s eras. Feel free to ask me for recommendations on what to react to.

    I love Peter Gabriel, but in this video it's very difficult to talk about performance, a lot of the music is clearly playback with the samples already recorded and from a musical point of view you can say that one I likes it or not, from the musical point of view it's more difficult since the whole song is a hybrid where you don't know when the sound comes from the instruments that are present and which ones aren't. I prefer the music to come from what they're playing at that moment and in that place and here that doesn't exist.

    Now you have done a tiny portion of this man's amazing and creative work. But you have yet to review anything from Gabriel's good friend Phil Collins. Why not? If you listen to early '70s Genesis you will have both. After 1975 Phil Collins took over lead vocals and Genesis became a worldwide supergroup playing in stadiums. While doing this, Collins also started a solo career and produced many hits and award-winning videos. Paris LIVE 2004 is an older version of "In the Air Tonight" that is not to be missed. We will all be amazed if you are not taken by his voice.
    Both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins are brilliantly talented performers. More please.

    If I’m not mistaken the movement is West African, reflecting the tradition of rather overtly placing your feet into the ground as a way of connecting with the Earth. (European dance tends to want to leave the Earth, by contrast). You can see the deliberate stepping, jumping into the ground on the beat. And of course some of the players have African roots as well, and the Senegalese vocalist Y’ssou N’dour does a famous vocal on the original studio version.

    This song and this performance is so special. It never fails to warm my heart. But one thing I also think about every time I watch this video is how fit these musicians -- especially the vocalists -- need to be in. Could I be cheeky and ask if you would ever consider reacting too some Reggae
    such as Bob Marley or similar; Or some early British New wave bands such as the Jam, oh
    dear I'm showing my age; Maybe not, as I would probably be the only viewer of a Jam Song. Must stop
    as watching your joy for life, might make me think I have either a Soul or a Heart and that would never do.
    🥰🥰❤💙👏🤟👍👌🙆‍♀🙆‍♂.

    Very good reaction to a great uplifting performance. I see your channel is new so I will subscribe. You are probably getting many recommendations and mine is "Zombie" by The Cranberries". Just be prepared to get emotional.

    this is nice, but you gotta check out the cd/lp album live version of this, it's even better, the vocal solos are longer, Paula Cole is just jawdropping 🙂

    I appreciate your response and reaction to this, but you don't have to interrupt the flow so frequently in the beginning with a comment. Just say it while you play it! You could say some of it just with your body language. And recap at the end. This song gives me goosebumps, especially this live performance!

    Paula Cole had 2 solos in that very busy song. What else do you want? Peter Gabriel made her a star and she got a solo career out of that. It's African tribal rhythms. Gabriel was very much a champion of world music and a pioneer in incorporating and exploring the native music of 3rd world countries. He started out as one of the founders and lead singer of GENESIS. Check him out singing for GENESIS on the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL TV show in 1974. It should blow your mind.
    Btw, it's extremely difficult to sing while dancing in different rhythms circling a stage non stop. No lip sync, no precorded tracks.
