Broken drain plug almost ruined my day

  • The drain plug to the BMW 330xi snapped off in the oil pan with almost no force. On top of the price of oil and filter, I ran and bought 3 different types of bolt extractors and reverse bits to get the remaining plug out without having to drop the oil pan.

    Im sawing off a oil drain bolt by hand as a last resort, was overtightened. Next i will be very careful not to break to head all the way off doing it.

    A lot of the times you can use a flat head to remove the inner part. Better to break the bolt than strip a very expensive pan, I believe they're hollow for this exact reason.

      Irwin Hanson screw extractor, I don’t recall the exact size I used for this plug.

      @@Andrewactual Thank you very much. I ended up being able to just unscrew mine without a bit. I tried a reverse screw, but my drill wasn't giving enough rotation. The torn screw started to unscrew anyway as the drill helped it turn. I shoulda tried that before hand...
