    Today your video saved me from a meltdown, thanks a lot! First oil change on my wife’s 120d (N47 engine), noticed previous owner had stripped the bolt and done a quick and dirty fix with liquid gasket on threads to try and seal, a big oily mess. Luckily this tip worked perfect with the 13 x 1,5 mm kit I found at our local car parts store. After re-threading with M13, I carefully torqued the new bolt to 25 Nm, no more, with new washer. Now all good, and my day was saved from meltdown!

      I have a 2016 X5 35i and the same issue. I haven't changed the oil since the last time they said I will need a new oil pan since the screw is barely keeping the oil in. They quoted me $4k to have this replaced. 😮I would like to try this but I'm concerned if it doesn't work, I'll have no way to close back my oil pan. I'm not the most handy but this looks simple. I just haven't seen it on the X5 and curious if it's as easy on my vehicle

    Thanks. My 2013 X3 leaks on the drain plug too.
    I hope is the same size. Amazon doesn't have it anymore.
    When you buy the oil filter it comes with the drain plug washer. Now that you have a bigger plug, do the washer fits the plug or you have to buy bigger wahers?
    Please advise.

    • @edcardiy
      @edcardiy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The new plugs comes with a bigger washer on the kit, I will be using the washers that comes with the kit and not the one that came with the oil filter, Plugs are bigger so the oil filter washers will not fit.

      @@edcardiy how the oil coming out are there still flakes? I’m thinking of doing this to mine since I have the same issue

    • @edcardiy
      @edcardiy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, My oil are normal with no debris, But after the repair of the stripped threads on the oil pan and did an oil change, I found pieces of threads (debris) on the old oil filter after putting in the new filter. So the old oil filter did it's job by stopping any debris or particles on the oil to prevent from circulating on the engine.
      When you do this repair, always flush the engine (better do it twice) with either cheap oil or your old bmw oil (with no debris on oil) and change to a new oil and filter for the final oil change.

      Hi, I think there is no tool to check if the tapper is straight, Just eyeball it on all direction and make sure that it is not tilted, The tapper should not get stuck while turning, There should be only a bit of resistance while turning the tapper.

    How does anyone strip an oil pan bolt on a BMW almost impossible if you replace the crush washer every time

    • @edcardiy
      @edcardiy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The previous owner stripped it and ended up fixing it, BMW oil pan is aluminum, it can be easily strip by over torqueing it or cross threading the oil plug during oil change.

      Hi, It was already stripped by the previous owner, Before I bought the car, So I had no choice but to fix it instead of replacing the pan which is expensive and labor intense.

    Can every broken thread be repaired?

    • @edcardiy
      @edcardiy  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it can be repaired as long as you go 1 size bigger than the previous thread, The bigger thread will make a new thread and remove the previous thread (stripped thread). Link for the repair kit (amzn.to/4bNPBQL)

      You can still torque it to proper spec, But for me I wouldn't take a chance, it might strip again.

    I am very sorry to correct you, but at 2:48 you state that you are going to "thicker" oil. That is incorrect. The thickness of the oil is stated by the first figure, in this case still "five"W. You are going to a different temparture value, which is the second figure, in this case "fourty¨.

    Need to do this to my 320ix. How’s it holding up?

    • @edcardiy
      @edcardiy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So far there is no leak, it's holding up extremely well. If you plan on doing this to your 320ix just make sure check what size of oil drain plug and buy the next size up (just my opinion).

    Awesome video but I'm still a bit confused about the tap size choice. When you measured, the drain plug measured less in diameter than the tap. I'd think they should be about the same size. How does the plug fit snug if the tap size is bigger than the new plug? Sorry for these inquiries, but I'm kind of new to this tapping thing. Haven't even bought the tool yet , but i have a stripped oil pan on my 02 540. And where did you buy your tap set? What is the kit number? Please let me know as well. Thanks.

      @FredCarney ปีที่แล้ว +4

      if you use the 13 x 1.5 tap the threads of the tap fit right into the existing 12x1.5 threads in the pan. You are taking 0.5mm off each side which the tap can easily do. The normal drill size for the 13x1.5 is smaller than the existing threads so you don't need to drill. Put some grease on the tap to catch cut threads and backoff and clean as you tap. Use a bent q-tip with a little oil on it to clean out around the opening and flush with some (used) oil.

    • @edcardiy
      @edcardiy  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi JK GV, The drain plug should be a bit smaller than the tap, If they were the same size the drain plug will not go in the thread of the pan . Here is the link for the repair kit: amzn.to/3chJjPW
      Just make sure that the original drain plug is M12x1.5, otherwise this kit will not work for your application.

    • @edcardiy
      @edcardiy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Just re-tap with the bigger threads, No need to drill before tapping. Just make sure the tap is perfectly straight before tapping completely, You don't want to get this cross threaded. Hope this helps you.

      Yes, aluminum is a softer metal than steel, it requires special attention when tightening oil drain plug.
