  • The Jag uses a GM A6 compressor - however many "new" A6 compressors are actually upgraded S6 compressors. That's what the prior owner put on this car. Unfortunately mine went bad, it doesn't seem to be something you can buy...

As a Sunair factory vendor I will say it's very easy to obtain "S6" Compressor parts and far easier than you make it appear in this video. Although, your problem is not uncommon when going with a different model drop in replacement compressor model. Inside that "S6" compressor it's actually a Denso 10PA17 series compressor!

I admire your tenacity, this is the part of old car ownership where i make the decision that maybe I don’t need air conditioning :)

I'm thinking they bought a compressor that did not have the proper jag v pulley so they transferred the original clutch from the previous compressor. Or maybe they bought a bare compressor without a clutch?
Sorry though the only Jah I have is a modern s-type. I came across this video as I have same exact failure on my 48 Packard restomod with a sbc and a6 compressor. Getting that snap ring holding coil was a bear and I wanted to see how others got it out.

I agree that lots of rebuilt stuff is poor, and some new stuff. BUT, that bearing has run on PAG oil????
Check with GM to see if the S6 compressors are good to run on it, there's your answer.

I have a 1985 Jaguar Xj6, which was pretty much original when I got it. Mine currently has its original A6 unit. Some day I will get around to fixing the AC but for now I am chasing the very common rough idle issue.

Just fit an original A6 back on the vehicle and all these unnecessary problems vanish.
Shade tree, back yard mechanics , small suburban mechanics, forum readers, they all think they know better than the people who designed, developed, sold and guaranteed the vehicles in the first place. They are dreamin’.

I'm dealing with the same issue. My compressor is a 4 'seizens' 58098 in which the bearing failed as well taking the hub and pulley with it. But I may have found a clutch for mine. We'll see when it gets here. If it's a fit, before installing, I'll replace the bearing with one of known quality. If not, I'm going back to my original A6.

I know everyone is going to go nuts here, but the original GM A6 compressor should take 525 grade mineral oil ONLY. When you could buy GM rebuilt versions they carried a sticker warning you of this. I know a UK-based Rolls' specialist that sells them with the sticker in place. Doesn't matter how many are being fed PAG oil...It is NOT right and soon enough the compressor will fail.
The R134a conversion took over, I can see why, because lots of people say it works. Too many differences for it to work properly. I don't understand, apart from high-cost, why RS24 gas, a direct R12 drop-in gas has not gained wider acceptance?
I think someone else suggested this, the answer lay in fitting a standard A6 compressor.
