    I watch everything every week I can. F1, Indycar, all 3 Nascar series, Moto GP, SBK, American Flat Track, WEC, touring cars, dirt mods/sprints, and occasionally youtubers in crown vics. I'm going to take Pato, Scotty Mac, and Scott Dixon for my podium. Always a good interview with Dale. I think that sports people are the wrong audience to target. You want the 16-24 year old group that is looking for their something.

    Hey Conor, hell of a job on Sunday! I felt compelled to share after watching this episode. Was at the race Sunday and I've been binge watching as many interviews as possible, etc., since I got home. Some background on myself, I was born and raised in New Pal and moved down south 14 years ago, but still come home for the race (people from Indy call it the "race" because well you know). Was my 38th in a row (I do not count COVID) and have been in the same seats in turn three since 1989. Row JJ section 11, spotters are just over my right shoulder, so you have an idea. My dad has been taking me to the track for as long as I can remember and had the chance to take my daughter and middle son this year for their first 500. So, we had 3 generations in the stands which was very special for my dad and myself (he flew up from Ft. Meyers and his first 500 was 1967). One hell of a race Sunday, with the rain and starting so late. Took them to Legends Day, so my kids got to see the front stretch, take in the garages, have the run of the place so come race day when the whole vibe changes on race day they have some point of reference. Got my son down by the fence during the race so he could get an up-close feel for the speed as you guys went by; he did not want to leave. Daughter was pretty quiet for most of the race, but the last 30 laps when it's time to go; she was on her feet yelling. Hopefully I was able to pass the torch somewhat and will carry on through another generational fan.
    I think the trick, have to get people to the race, because it is completely different than seeing it on TV. Even the diehard F1 fans think a bit differently once they see it in person. Nice expensive star-studded parade they had in Monoco on Sunday, but I digress. Then more F1 drivers and Nascar guys to come and compete the better, Indy is in a class all its own. Caught the Awards show - damn funny about hanging in the snake pit during the rain delay! Too funny! Subscribed! Keep up the awesome job and love to see you back in a full-time seat.

    Great episode, great guest.
    1) my kids love the park side cards
    2) as soon as I saw the hype over the nascar finish I went to check and see if if was a gwc. Of course it was which completely takes away the excitement for me. Sorry it just feels manufactured and doesn’t mean anything. It’s not like the irl Chicagoland finishes where there was like a 40 lap run to the photo finish.
    3) jr is spot on about the schedule. Everyone already knows some major problems with the series and year after year it’s not being fixed. We can’t have 2 months between races.
    4) 100% need more ovals. When they brought back the INDYCAR triple crown the hype was through the roof.
    5) sorry but INDYCAR and danger and speed is what the sport is. No one wants to see anyone get injured but that is one element that made the Indy 500 what it is today. Wickens crash was horrendous, hated to see it and it still makes me uneasy, but after that race when everyone said “we are done with Pocono” shocked me. We have to find a way to get back to big ovals.
    It is also a reason why the drivers are so respected and loved by the fans. We know what you guys are putting on the line every weekend no matter what the track. Much respect for the risk you are taking.
    6) Conor best of luck this may we are really pulling for you. Turn four goes bonkers when you make your way to the front. Avoid those flying tires!

      I couldn’t agree more on #5. A lot of the people fail to realize that the sport was born and was made for ovals since the 1900s.
      Racing is always going to be dangerous, but we do need more ovals again. This sport will always be dangerous, but it’s the safest it has been. We need more ovals back. Especially Pocono. It was built for IndyCar first

Love the podcast and wish Conor could join the broadcast team for Indy, or even better, NASCAR. Leigh Diffey, Townsend Bell and James Hinchcliff are terrific, but the guys next to Mike Joy - Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick - just don't have the likeable and fun personalities, not to mention the insight I'd like to see in expert analysts.

    Die hard IndyCar fan here of about 8-10yrs and I tell so many people how great the racing is and I don't understand how ratings are so low. I grew up and still live in SW Virginia and grew up with NASCAR being a kinda religion and went to several races a year. We always watched the 500 but not much else and I really started seeking out IndyCar and fell in love with it and it's now the only motorsport that I never miss a race, qual, practice. It really is the most diverse and best racing series and it is criminally underpromoted, shame on the IC command because they really suck when it comes to promoting races and drivers. @@ConorDaly22 Just heard you on the Indycar radio broadcast! What the sport needs is a genuine network/motorsport relationship with the promotion and motivation enjoyed by NASCAR and F1, something it hasn't had since the end days of the split. NBC doesn't have a dedicated sports network like ESPN or Fox so that's a possible explanation for the lukewarm attention. I used to be a huge critic of NASCAR back in the days of Speedvision/Speed Channel (your dad was a great on-air personality btw), now with IMSA in the NASCAR portfolio my skepticism has changed. Perhaps selling to NASCAR and opening up ISC ovals and moving to Fox is a possible solution. Anyhow thanks for following in your father Derek's footsteps as a voice for open wheel.

    Marketing over content - you’re absolutely spot on. How do you get the product in front of the eyes?

    As a motorsports fan who watches everything from F1 to virtual racing I have a few thoughts on the issues Indy is dealing with.
    a) lack of events: What’s the best way to grow a TH-cam channel? Upload frequently and often so that people get into the habit of watching you. NASCAR benefits from the fact that they have a race on TV on an almost weekly basis. They are on often enough that people have to think about if a NASCAR race is on this weekend, it probably is. F1 is a global series with much more expensive cars to operate and much more complicated shipping logistics to make a race week happen, yet they still have more events in a season than Indy does. That’s not something that should happen.
    b) the marketing gap: F1/liberty have really emphasized how much effort they put into creating the content for their series. Even the simple things like practice session highlights are narrated, and there is someone summarizing what occurred and the results. With Indy, we get chopped up snippets directly from the NBC/peacock broadcast without anything else. F1 also provides those useful weekend previews and post race videos that preview or break down the events and explain what it means for each team. WEC has been doing similar things.
    c) it takes time: F1 has been putting all this effort into marketing for years and years now and it has started to see the benefits of it. IndyCar has started to do some more, but it just isn’t enough and even if they were doing enough, seeing the results of those efforts will take years to bear fruit.
    d) commercial free broadcasts allow for strategy to shine: Undercuts/overcuts/tire offsets. The pit cycle sequence offers some of the most important parts of a race, and for some reason, often we don’t get to see parts of it because the broadcast goes to commercial. F1 chose to put all the advertising around the track itself rather than cutting to commercial every 5-10 minutes and it does wonders for being able to track who pits when and where they’ll come out into the field.

    • @ConorDaly22
      @ConorDaly22  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      these are some great points to make for sure. It's not an overnight fix. completely agree with the lack of events, that is now becoming the most consistent thing folks say is the fact that there is no consistency on the schedule to start the year.
      Commercial free broadcasts i still dont agree with because every other professional sport I watch is full of commercials so, I still find it difficult to agree with that.

    • @happygster922
      @happygster922 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ConorDaly22 I just think that with other spots, you have breaks in the game that allow for commercials without missing anything. With racing, you’re always going to be missing something, even under yellow.

  • @Kevinap34
    @Kevinap34 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Conor you made some great observations about the ratings between NASCAR and F1. I think Indycar needs to ask themselves what does NASCAR and F1 offer that Indycar doesn't have. Well I've come to conclusion that the venues play a big part of both of those series. So I think Indycar needs to find a promotor willing to race at tracks that would draw more attention to the series. Particular international venues like Mexico, South America, Australia, even places like Hawaii or Alaska where there's very little Motorsports. Going to these places would essentially establish new fans that are not attached to NASCAR or F1.
    The other thing that is widely overlooked as to why F1 is so popular is that it's a team based championship series. There are so many motorsports fans who do not follow drivers at all, but instead follow the manufacturers or teams. You're a FERRARI fan or MERCEDES fan, F1 has strong fan base because there's a strong visibility of teams.
    Indycar is a driver's series, and to casual observer there are no teams in Indycar. This why there's no identity, not even CHEVY or HONDA branding is attracting fans, because neither of the manufacturers have their own team, they are just motor suppliers for bunch of no-name teams.
    Casual observers can pick out the RED BULLS, and the MCLAREN teams in F1 with ease as just looking at the cars. The team liveries are all very easy to differentiate. It certainly helps that F1 regulates their team size to just two cars.
    Indycar teams are a mess, and if it were truly a spec series then the teams need to be regulated. There are 10 full time teams, all them should be running 3 cars, no more and no less. That's 30 full time cars on the grid. They run that even at smaller venues, by having shared pitboxs much like F1 does. Essentially 2 pitboxes per team merged together, that's a total of 20 pitboxes. 2 over the wall teams with 2 fuel tankers that are filled twice capacity to handle 3 cars.
    They also need to have a more unified look much like what MCLAREN, JUNCOS, and SHANK are currently doing with their team liveries. The important part of this change would be for Indycar to establish an official team championship to the series. Which I feel is the missing component to this series. They need bandwagon fans who are gonna jump on the ride with the winning teams.
    Lastly the biggest improvement Indycar could make is raising the quality of their broadcast. First they need to do it go commercial free, the interruptions are killing the ratings. Nobody wants sit and watch 2 minutes of ads whether it's split screen or complete commercial break. It's absolutely ridiculous that there would be commercials in motorsports events when it's a race full of signage and moving billboards.

    • @ConorDaly22
      @ConorDaly22  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think racing internationally is a good idea for sure. BUT we can also only go where people pay us to go at the moment. Events pay the series to come race, and if no one is willing to pay, it would be a big financial loss for us to go to new places. Attendance is actually also never our problem other than a couple oval events it seems, so the problem still remains at getting people to watch.
      Going commercial free is almost impossible on network TV. Every professional sport has commercials, the Super Bowl is almost more famous FOR commercials haha. We will never get that. I dont really understand how F1 on ESPN does it but I've noticed they do start to cut for a few ads during Qualifying now as well so I think they're going to eventually have more ads. In the end, someone has to pay for the TV time.

    I SOOOOOO agree with Dale about the fact that a casual fan doesn't give a S about a new car. Motorsports fans... sure they may care if the same car is being used for several years. But the average sports fan is more concerned with the product and the connection to the athletes. People didn't suddenly start watching F1 because they got new cars (that happens constantly). It's because they got a connection to the athletes and the drama.

    To add to the point of not being numb to the danger, it would benefit all drivers to have that attitude of taking care of one another on the race track. Harping on drivers intentionally wrecking one another, blocking horrendously, etc would greatly bring that sense of danger back. To watch Joey Logano aggressively block as he did in the 2021 Daytona 500, wreck the whole field, including Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski hitting super hard, and then getting out and using the excuse "I was trying to win the race" angered me so much. It should not be an excuse when someone is coming at 195 mph to pass you while you are going 180. Get these drivers to measure their aggresiveness and know when to concede when you have lost, and that element of danger can be reinstilled into the motorsport as a whole.

    I am an Indycar and NASCAR fan. I personally find f1 boring because it isn’t a good competition. Although I will say this, f1 makes me want to like it. The cars look amazing! They just do. Indycars need to look better imo. Specifically the “fenders” in front of the back wheels imo make it not look as aggressive as the f1 car. The other thing is the fact that f1 is a development series. They really make you feel like they are on the absolute cutting edge. Which they probably are. I think the combination of the hype, amazing looking cars, and the cutting edge of tech make f1 very interesting to the average person. I would argue that is who is attracted to f1. Not necessarily race fans.

Can you explain to me why people “whoever they are” don’t want indycar at the bigger oval tracks? I guess I don’t understand why Indy is okay but not Michigan, pocono, Fontana, Kansas, Vegas etc. I understand the danger but for years drivers have been willing to do it anyway. Even when it was way more dangerous considering the safety of the cars. But why is it only okay at Indy? Anyways you’re my driver, let’s get it done! Stay positive. It will all work out.

    I think since we went to the McRacecar in Indy and now in NASCAR most of the romance of the sport has gone away. Unfortunately F1 is packaged for consumerism. The cars, teams and drivers have consistent brand recognition, the cars have consistent coloring, the hype, DTS, and great coverage makes F1 easy to understand and consume….Indycar on the other hand is still obscure, no brand recognition, cars change liveries regularly causing more confusion etc. Indycar is for the loyal fanbase but is terrible for attracting the casual consumer.

      I can understand a bit of that but your argument sort of gets defeated by the NASCAR model. There is something about marketing the NAMES and the excitement of the product that we are missing I believe

In my opinion F1 and Nascar are Kardashians. Overhyped and not worth the money. I live close to Talladega and I will never attend unless Indycar or IMSA race there.
