  • We have a lot to talk about this week! I also know we've had Alex Palou on the show before because he's winning a lot, but I think you'll find this interview with him extra interesting. Some great tech talk, Indy 500 discussion as well as a look at the hybrid era ahead of us!
Many incidents to discuss from the Laguna Seca race! Do we have a beef watch? A teammate beef? More Santino beef? Lots to discuss and some great weekends for drivers who are at new teams now!
We also have another great Ricky Treadway random Indy 500 driver of the week! As always let us know what you think in the comments! This weekend we do not have a race but we will find a guest to have a great discussion with!
    Thank you!

I understand Race Control waiting to throw the FCY, even though I don’t agree with it or like it. However, if they want to keep it “fair”, they should wait until that last car in the pits completes their stop, exits the pits, and blends back into traffic in natural timing, just like every other car that completed a stop, BEFORE throwing the delayed FCY.

The issue with the delayed FCY is that it takes away an interesting strategy aspect, which is how much do you want to risk staying out. For example, Palou had fuel to run 5 or 6 more laps before his final pitstop, but opted to pit earlier and short-fill to defend against the yellow. And that's OK, because the only thing that could cost him the race was a yellow. On the other hand, Newgarden was having a bad race, was on an alternate strategy and had reasons to gamble staying out and risking catching the yellow. If Palou had known they would wait for him to pit, he would have stayed out for sure. He played the race and took the risk into account.
Then, they not only let Josef pit under green. They throw the yellow just as he gets into the pit lane, literally gifting him the second place. And that's where the issue was imo. It has nothing to do with Penske conspiracies, and I would call it the same whoever took benefit. It's just wrong imo, whether they've already done in the past or not. They also gifted a podium to Felix in Portland last year with a delayed caution, for example.
Rather than delaying the caution, I think that there are better solutions. Just throw the yellow, and if it screws you, bad luck. You knew the risks of staying out. Or don't close the pits under yellow. Or close the pit exit but not the entry, allowing the pitting cars to cycle out at their normal place.
That's how I see it. I think that this has been an issue for some time, and what happened in Laguna was a very brutal example of the problems delayed cautions cause. I hope they rethink about it.

I see what you’re saying and a lot of the time I do agree with you but to be honest the teams are the ones who made the suggestion to indycar race control about holding the yellow. A lot of the bigger teams didn’t like the fact the smaller teams starting at the back could gamble and short pit to then cycle to the front if they got a yellow. Either way, people are going to be upset!

I'm very biased, but I HATE silly season in IndyCar. I get that a union is asking for trouble, but I wish IndyCar as an org would step in some. For example, you register you cars, your drivers, and maybe a few alternates for the season. Then you STICK TO THEM! They sink a lot of money into marketing, merch, etc. To this day you can buy Malukas merch for a car he never got to drive... It's a bad experience for fans. My hope is that we get those off season races which can be used to experiment with new drivers and reduce the length of silly season.

Just thought about it I should have saved this for during the debate no one wants to hear those two ......(insert favorite expiative here). The second Foyt seat has defiantly gained value. I don't think Santino is going anywhere anytime soon. Excited to see the hybrid and how people approach recharging while trying to stay close for passes or if it's a shoot your load then wait 2 laps to try again. 1:00 CART fined Alex Zarnadi $50,000 and put him on probation for aggressive driving. Yes, it was a different series with different rules but doesn't Indycar have an option to do that. They need to do more to Ferrucci than shake their finger and give him a five minute time out in the pits. As for Newgarden, he doesn't even seem like he enjoys racing anymore. He needs to abandon his hyper focus on winning, relax and remember how to have fun again. The wins will return.

    • @ConorDaly22

Is Alex being a bit naive about/playing down the switch to hybrid?
When F1 did it, Mercedes hit the ground running while Renault could only manage a steady jog. It completely changed the running order and ended Red Bull's 1st dominant run.
Honda hybrid powertrains are in the currently dominant Red Bulls, so from the outside looking in, Honda would seem to have way more experience than Chevrolet.
I love that predicting top 10s is way harder than it is in F1, so I'd have been watching Indy with interest even without the switch. Now I reckon it's going to get even more mixed up.

I don’t think our systems are quite as complex honestly. I think the big teams will for sure be most prepared and ahead of the game for a while though. Chevy and Honda have actually sort of worked together on the development of the system so might not be as big of a difference between manufacturers but who knows!
