I have seen several versions of this live, and Copeland changes the rhythm every time his improvisation is amazing. I am a drummer myself and he's th biggest influence on me,his mind is wired differently, he knows he has to provide the rhythm for the song, but it's almost like he is not capable of providing the same beat for a song two nights in succession, just a totally astounding drummer.

    • @IanZWhite00

It tracks with his jazz background, where the focus is less on writing and remembering deliberate “parts” and more on building a vocabulary of tools you can pull out confidently at any moment.
It also comes down to part complexity. You can sit down and “learn” 7 Nation Army in an afternoon, but with something that uses so many ghost notes and embellishments that you’re not going to be able to write down on a sheet of paper, it’s easier to just practice the style of improv and focus on making similar creative decisions to the original.

I actually got to hang with them, in the early 80s when I was in HS. My Aunt worked and dated the late great Hawaii Concert Promoter Ken Rosene. Rode with them in a limo from Honolulu Airport l. Got to their gig at UH Manoa campus. Watch them do blow before they hit the stage for about 200 fans, did their Outlandos songs, but played their Two new song Message in a bottle and walking on the moon. Nice guys joking around like tourist about luaus and beaches, never at that time, knew how giant rock icons they would become. Still a huge fan and I'm 58.

but the songs from this gig appearing in the Around the world video are so lonely. born in the 50´s and Bring on the night....so this is a complete novelty isn´t it??? such a great image and sound, i love it...

You know, I have seen this footage before and it's the best intimate live footage of the Police probably next to the 'Secret Policeman's Other Ball' in Scotland...

It would have broken Sting...the thought of having strong-minded talented musicians playing on his songs that he was not able to fully control or direct would have been simply too much to bear for Sting & his ego....

Let's go to the bar and see this band called the Police. I've been to a lot of punk gigs in bars, but these guys were already one of the most famous rock bands in the world.
