I grew up listening to and playing their tunes in bands all through my teenage years in the eighties. Loved them then and still my favourite to this day. Stole heaps of my drum licks from Stewart - great inspiration and great times!
Love Andy’s endless older brother dealing with the two younger idiots vibe - not unlike Brian Wilson trying to ignore the lifelong animosity and physical battles between Dennis Wilson and Mike Love.
Back when he was with the Police I taught Sting tennis in Santa Barbara, CA, and it was truly one of the high points in my career! The guy's a pretty good athlete, too.

This is great. I’ve always loved the band, but this shows me how wonderful their relationship was. Not perfect of course, but beautiful and joyful in the best of times, at least.
Trios are an odd sort of band to be in. In most other bands I've been in, usually quartets, members tend to sort of pair off and hangout in twos. Usually the bass player and drummer tend to hangout together and the singer and lead guitarist hangout together, or some variation on that. Its like everybody's got their buddy in the band who they naturally gravitate towards... But that balance isn't there in a trio, and I've often found that trios tend to end up with two members constantly at each others throats, with one in the middle trying to keep the peace.
Then there's Rush, who're all immense friends. Ged & Alex are the two long-time friends who always hang out; Neil was content to hang out with either of them but was also perfectly fine on his own. Kinda what makes them as a trio more special than others.
I see Sting & Stewart with the same kind of relationship as Lennon & McCartney. You can tell there is love there but it might be best not to work together too often. Stewart knows Sting is tightly wrapped and revels in the fact that he knows he can get a rise out of him. Kind of what brothers do to each other.
Stewart is a monster drummer, wickedly intelligent, talented at so much more than just the drums, and has such an over-the-top animated personality! I absolutely love the guy!
Rockin' with Zombieman20005 I respect your opinion, but VH should not even be in the building when talking best band ever...... Even listing best American bands ever. LED Zep s/b #1, then any of Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2, The Who are acceptable.
When these guys first started producing albums I dont think we the listeners realized what a priceless, timeless set of jewel's we had with them. Lightning in a bottle.
Copeland founded the band. Sting's massive ego wanted it to be his band. They were at each other's throats recording Synchronicity. and so it goes. Rock and Roll.
And Sting was far more talented than the other two. Do you really think if he had replaced them, early on, that anything would have been much different?
Stewart Copeland , in my humble opinion is the most badass percussionists/drummer of the past 40 years….at least. Nobody in relative modern day holds a candle to his absolute wildfire syncopated rhythms, crazy intricate cymbal and h hat technique. Many bands do have very good, and great drummers, but Stu’s got a lot more abilities than just rockin a beat for a band to play with. Andy is legend class as well, but I play horns and drums, so my opinion is for someone more knowledgeable. But all you have to do is listen. And Sting. Well, he has one name so that speaks for itself. Thank all of you for delivering great music everytime!! “MIAB” is my personal favorite. Try playing it!! Im still homesick for a place ive never been.
BS. Stewart has worked on several soundtracks and collaborated with other artists and some of those are brilliant. I would take the Rumblefish Soundtrack over Synchronicity any day.

Same. Regatta and Sinchronicity were Two of the very First music or albums my ear experienced being in my parents collection.. I was so Happy I had the chance to see them live during their Réunion...saw them twice and It was great.
Watching them messing around is super funny. Sting and Stewart have actually always been really good friends and they still are. It's just they often disagreed a lot musically. Both of them are fantastic musicians. And Andy is a really underrated guitar player.
What a lame simpy comment. Andy underrated? Shut up.
I don't believe there is anything underrated about The Police.
They are 3 badazzes who have made some of the best music in human history, and pretty much everyone who knows anything knows it.
I concur dude, Andy is a genius.
Like brothers
The fact that Sting and Stewart always argued or were in disagree was also their most powerful resource. They need each other and they know that. Every little thing they do is magic!
that's how a band should be. you'll never stop loving each other despite what bugs you. my guys have been with me in obscurity for 25 years. i love 'em
But do you think you'd still "love 'em" if you'd made it big? These 2 genuinely hate each others guts.
Yeah no behind the scenes they hated each other 🤣🤣
@@MisAnnThorpe I read Stewart's biography (loved it, that man has such in interesting and wide ranging professional life), and they most certainly do NOT hate each other's guts. People who hate each other do not keep in touch privately. Sure, Stu loved/loves to wind Sting up, but that's not hatred.
Sting seems such a narcissistic jerk. I like the way Copeland bursts his bubble a little bit.
I think you have it backwards
@@nickbargas7352 correct
I really think people just don’t get Stings sense of humor.
What....?????
@@Grayham4 Sting was the police. He's proven his talent over the decades "ten Summoner's tales" one of my favorites. Last song "Nothing 'Bout me" tells everything you need to know about him.. Copeland was the founder of the Police and he feels entitled to be #1 and he's jealous of Stings success as he became the face of the Police and Copeland wanted to be the face of the Police. Just my personal opinion.
Steward and Sting fight like brothers. They’ll always be brothers.
the clashing ego's is what made the police what they were.
Plus some normal musical talent and skills.
@@herrfriberger5 Yeah, absolutely normal :D
True of many successful bands
I grew up listening to and playing their tunes in bands all through my teenage years in the eighties. Loved them then and still my favourite to this day. Stole heaps of my drum licks from Stewart - great inspiration and great times!
awesome, cherish those memories.
I still treasure the moment they took over the airwaves and saved us from disco.
@claudialunden3691 excellent 👍 comment! Agree 💯% and beyond. Elvis n the Police 🚓 in my opinion 😁☮️
Love Andy’s endless older brother dealing with the two younger idiots vibe - not unlike Brian Wilson trying to ignore the lifelong animosity and physical battles between Dennis Wilson and Mike Love.
stewart copeland is the FRIGGIN MAN
Back when he was with the Police I taught Sting tennis in Santa Barbara, CA, and it was truly one of the high points in my career! The guy's a pretty good athlete, too.
You see him in Dune? The guy was a specimen!
@@smelltheglove2038 He was the County champion at 100yds sprint in his teenage years in Newcastle and was beaten into third place in the National heats. He's always been very aware and disciplined about physical fitness.
Brilliant Musicians----ALL 3 of them!
Well look at nirvana. they were all great friends.
Cue Genesis: ...And Then There Were Three. They used to be more than 3.
@@conorreedR2C same could be said for Genesis, but they used to be 5 and then became 3
Sting is from my hometown,
His brother still brings the milk to my mama's street.
Top band!
Isn't that what their Dad did too? Newcastle on Tyne or thereabouts from memory, the Sumner family.
@@bbb462cid Yes, Philip took over the rounds when Earnest died. He also had a bar/disco at Whitley Bay for a while in the early nineties.
My love here goes for Andy Summers, love him !!
One of my fave bands all time. So gifted, intelligent, and all had a great sense of humor.
They are, and always will be, one of my favorite three groups....sound, songs, adorableness 💕💓💕💓
LMAO when Sting pushes Stewart's fingers off the mixing board, it's like Laurel and Hardy!
This is very cute! Copeland and Sting seem like oil and vinegar that are great together when the bottle has been shaken.
"Since you were fired at the time you attempted to fire me, it doesn't count" lmao
Best band ever...
Love those guys
RJ GORF this is my second fav band, van halen is my fav
Rockin' And Gamin' With Zombieman20005
I'd put VH in my top five. I got Zeppelin as #2. And yes....we're old. Lol.
Mike Patton it goes
1. Van Halen
2. The Police
3. Aerosmith
4. Led Zepplen
5. Sammy Hagar
Rockin' with Zombieman20005 I respect your opinion, but VH should not even be in the building when talking best band ever...... Even listing best American bands ever. LED Zep s/b #1, then any of Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2, The Who are acceptable.
That picture at the end is great. Despite it all, we're still here and love each other in our own peculiar way.
Poor Andy dealing with those two egomaniacs.
Absolutely! Andy was the mature child between two immature parents or the punk rock version of Absolutely Fabulous with Eddie, Saffie and Patsy!
Thats show biz for ya.
Thas what Ringo amd George had to put up with.
Carl Wilson of the Beah Boys also had put up with it.
Andy was also. Just more private about it. Never did it in ppublic. Three Alphas in a band is a bad idea.
No-one pushes buttons like family. Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing it 👍👍
Copeland is so good at pushing people's buttons. it's almost art.
The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Police...nothing else is so big in music
and Pink Floyd...
A little band called "The Rolling Stones" maybe?
"...these guys will still be my band... "
Love this line. 😊
They had some of the best chemistry for making a band edearing and fun to watch.l
Funny thing is, this isn't even the half of it. I love these guys.
Police, you will always be my favorite trio.
the thing about their dynamic is that stewart doesn't take stings ego seriously at all, which is a damn good thing.
Sting wrote all the music pretty much, but Andy and Stewart are just brilliant at adding their flare to his chosen notes.
The thing I'd like to say about the Police is that Stewart, Andy, and I loved each other... too much. - Sting.
The Police is the best thing any of those three guys have ever done. All three of their careers combined doesn't equal one single The Police album.
BS. Stewart has worked on several soundtracks and collaborated with other artists and some of those are brilliant. I would take the Rumblefish Soundtrack over Synchronicity any day.
@@j.frankparnell6195 Yeah. That's really good but it comes nowhere near the combined greatness of those three guys together.
@@craigdamage I just really hate the Synchronicity album. I hated it back in the day and I still do today. I will agree with you on every other The Police albums.
@@j.frankparnell6195 Synchronicity is a fantastic record. Period. It unfortunately is cursed by having this ONE track on it that ended up becoming the most grossly over played pop song in all of recorded history. I don't even have to say its name. It is still overall a fantastic album. Just like Led Zeppelin IV. I'll rip my goddam eyeballs out if I ever have to endure "Stairway to Heaven" again but that is still a very good record too.
Stewarts personality is the perfect compliment to Stings lack of one
*Complement
Stewart has always envied Sting's talent. The only truth is that Stewart and Summers were just musicians for hire in the Police.
@@canalaverdade. Couldn’t be further from the truth
@@radex__ yeah hahahahah, No!
I always love the police! Definetly one of my all time favorite band! And have many of their albums, this guy's had a love hate relationship!
Lo único que quiero decir es que estos 3 maravilloso músicos hicieron mi vida más feliz desde hace 40 años y eso.......no tiene precio!!
Thanks Andy, Stewart and Sting!!
Stewart takes the posh out of Sting in a second.
I thought it was known they had some difficulty getting along.
I saw these guys in Jacksonville Colluseum 13 Mar 1982. Just brilliant. The place was half Empty! my friend Rees and I just went on the off chance of getting a ticket whilst we were working at Jacksonville NAS. Supported by Joan Jet and the Blackhearts.
Stewarts awesome!
Stewart put the band together and discovers Sting- an amazing talent but Copeland is the brains. He is amazingly articulate and quick witted, probably more so than any musician I have heard.
Anybody else love these brothers?
Stewart has a very LOUD personality.
You'd have to be able to really appreciate such personality to deal with it lol
Sometimes the most brilliant bands have personalities which clash and they obviously did have that and it resulted in great music
right on. like dave and ed from van halen
Been a fan of the Police for so many years, but I never knew Stewart had an American accent!
Poor fucking Andy...
Oh he's not as innocent as he seems
@@bbb462cid Definitely the wisest member. He rolled with the punches a lot of the time and he has a great sense of humour too but he could dish out the verbals if he had to.
Each of them has a legitimate genius for what they do. And together they made magic.
I like hanging around people like Stewart Copeland for about a day or two but I couldn't imagine have to work with 24/7, he would get on my nerves too.
Yeah, it'd be a bit like spending time in close proximity to Ricky Gervais. Fun for a while but.... still preferable to spending it with John Cleese (Stinge?) I'd have thought.
As a drummer, I prefer being behind the beat. But I LOVE how Stewart pushes and Sting sings behind the beat
Nobody else does. Stop doing it!
Three opposites, yet the chemistry yielded amazing results.
That pair have always got on like an old married couple.
Andy playing the long suffering neighbour.
Stewart is the man!!! Love this guy!
Such a great band!! Stewart Copeland top 10 all time drummer definitely underrated
I'm convinced they shot their music videos in one go
pretty accurate I'd say
I went to an award ceremony where Sting was ending the show. He was visibly irritated while we all chatted mostly courtesy of the free bar and low volume then we all started laughing when he took his shirt off.
Pretty amazing chemistry for three guys who supposedly couldn't stand each other.
Keep in mind this was filmed many, many years after the height of their success. As you age, you learn to appreciate what got you to where you are as opposed to being young and still trying to create that success. Very different.
Sting turned into pampered tantric yoga man, Stewart wants to remind everyone, as often as possible, that he started the band, Andy just wants to play guitar in tiny shoes. At the end of the day, they're all incredible, just ask them. No, but really, they are all incredible musicians.
Just remember it's the friction that creates the flame...
I would love to see and hear new music from this guys! Love their music
2:35 Stew's heart talk... ^^
Legendary band...My first ever cassette tape was a recording of zenyatta mondatta back in 1980/81...Loved their music ever since😊
They stressed each other out BIG TIME, but it made for some of the most creative, exciting, and catchy music in Rock history
GREAT collection of moments! Nice one RJ.
Andy was the only adult in the band
LOL that seems accurate
Stewart pulled Sting out of obscurity. Without him, Sting would’ve stayed in a pub group.
You instantly understand why they can't stand each other
Two Alpha males
@@TonyT007 and one Sigma, thinking "I'm a fucking professional you asses".
It was Stewart's band, he started it.they were a super group as soon as Andy joined.i love that Stewart gave sting his richly deserved snarky due.sting drips pretentiousness. Talented yes, just 0 humility. Sting on his own.....abysmal arrogant dull professorial with the Police, brilliant.
Dont stand so close to me - could be a great coronavirus anthem!
Thanks Phil, those were great years - playing with my brother and my friends - we had a ball
Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker had better fist fights.
Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were and are legends, Stew and Sting are not, that's why those fist fights (and the music) were better.
Puertecitos68 You mean they're dead, or almost dead, then yes. They're meta rockstars.
Ginger Baker needed a really good kicking. And he's a bullshitter, going on about gang violence at his school, Shooter's hill GRAMMER school. I went to Eaglesfield comprehensive, in the same buildings as Shooter's hill and we didn't have gang violence.
You clearly haven't seen the video where Stewart breaks Sting's rib during a fight at the airport.
Puerticitos68 Haha! Nice derivative trolling, riffing on the fisticuffs and whatnot. It’s nonsense, but I’ll take the bait, if for no other reason than to piss on your sacred cow. Baby Boomer hype will be foisted upon us until the last baby boomer is dead and gone. Jann Wenner and a cottage industry of pretentious hype peddling critics inflated what was merely a transitional super group into something beyond all suspended disbelief. So be it. Cream was an indulgent mess of a band with a handful of great original compositions and two years of live shows in which the whole failed to equal the sum of its parts, respectively. Don’t believe me. What has Clapton said about Cream during the past half century? Freddie King was better than Cream on their best night, wanking individual solos and all. Sting is a better writer than Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker has nothing on Stewart Copeland and The Police were able to do much more live as a trio.
36 seconds in is the start of the bass introduction to the track Voices inside my head. Belter tune
