There were some 70’s low lights, but most of it was AMAZING.

Copelands drumming, so original and brilliant. As a drummer myself he's just insanely talented. On the second verse he doesn't use the snare once,very rarely done.The rimshots and little licks are brilliant too.There is multi tracking on this but his basic drumming is awesome.
that's why if guys are intelligent enough that wanted to make it in pop rock, then study everything you can; mainly jazz, which got more important than ever in the 80s to have something else to fall back on. one girl i was involved with briefly in the 90s, didn't like his playing, and i knew right off the bat it was because she didn't understand what he was doing at all. so, you can have the brains and talent, but you still need to understand how to make something like Stuy's drumming work.
Saw Sting perform this on stage in Berkeley, California in October 1999. A warm up show, before launching his "Brand New Day" tour in full. Just Sting, his acoustic guitar and that iconic voice. He had the whole auditorium wrapped around his finger, and I will never forget that musical moment. Followed that up with a gorgeous version of "Fragile," which literally brought tears to my eyes. What. An. Artist.
I was in the car with my dad when I asked him to tell me about a song he liked. He said ‘message in a bottle’ by the police and put the song. He told me what he liked most was the message of the song, he explained it to me with a smile on his face. Now I absolutely and unconditionally love this song. It will forever remind me of my father and how mutual our love is, now I try not to cry when I hear this song haha

Replying from the Future- its Summer of 2023, (Prince and) Morris Day & the Time's '777-9311' being broken down by drummers led me to 'the Pocket Queen' who had THIS song as one of the top five that influenced her. I hadn't noticed how Copeland's drumming changed throughout the song, I'd always concentrated on Sting's Bass playing. Now, I'm gonna go back and (re)listen to it again...
The breakout at the end with the asynchronous open to the ride is classic Copeland and worth the ticket money on its own. Love the style, love the sound!

I love this video. You can really see how Sting and Stewart are great friends, and at the same time, Sting may have been trying to use the band to become famous as "Sting" but Stewart was always there to say "dial it down buddy. We are an amazing rhythm section and we are making this happen together."

Their sound was truly one of a kind, great syncopated rhythms, off beat tempos, key-changes, and chord changes. They turned the reggae sound on its head and made it work.

Of course it’s sting you lose the goofiness of the police but him singing that song alone on scene with a tone as deep as his it makes you focus on the lyrics more because of it and result is way sadder and melancholic. There really was no bigger band in the 1980s. They were on the radio, in the record stores, on the stereo at someone's party. It seemed like those few years would just go on indefinitely. Watching things like this reminds me how quickly time passes.

Their sound was truly one of a kind, great syncopated rhythms, off beat tempos, key-changes, and chord changes. They turned the reggae sound on its head and made it work.
You know not so long ago I was asking myself why I was always late on that song when singing along it and it’s one of the only one with that effect in my playlist.

@@fordshaw5833 yes I watched sting live version of it and he seemed to have put a really good ampunt of work into it. Of course it’s sting you lose the goofiness of the police but him singing that song alone on scene with a tone as deep as his it makes you focus on the lyrics more because of it and result is way sadder and melancholic.

Why is everyone bitching about the video? It was the 1970's, music videos weren't a big deal back then. Most people didn't even get a chance to see them. Even seeing what the band looked like was a privilege back then.
