I actually know a couple who chose "Every Breath You Take" for their wedding, not realising it was about a stalker. Needless to say, the marriage didn't last.
What a song is about and how it makes someone feel are two different things. Music is still an art form open to interpretation regardless of what the creator says
It's amazing to think that Andy Summers is the same age as The Beatles. It just goes to show that you can still make it big in music even if you're not in your early twenties anymore.
He was the missing piece of the puzzle. Already a guitar master when he joined the Police and could literally play any style: punk, jazz, Rock, reggae and even classical
One reason that that Police have remained so relevant is that they broke up at the peak of their popularity after only 6 o so years in the spotlight. There's no awkward "trying to adapt to the 90s" arc in their history, no endless nostalgia-bait tours where both the band and the audience are increasingly old and sad, (I've been to too many of those), no revolving door of members. The Police remain pristine in memory, a short but monumental impact with great music. My personal favorite Police song is Synchronicity II.
Similar to how The Jam remain " pristine in memory" ,that's a really good way of putting it.There's no long,long...long sad decline(complete with endless fallouts and reformations) to sour the memories! Edit: Just to make one in,my fave Police track - Tea in the Sahara 😉
I remember being a kid and desperately waiting for them to come out with a new album after Synchronicity. All they did was release a crappy version of Don't Stand So Close to Me, yet I still ate it up.
I knew I couldn't be the only one who noticed these glaringly dumb mistakes. This is proof that anyone can do a little "research" and make a TH-cam video, acting as if they're some kind of authority on a topic. This guy is not.
As a composer, I had 3 main takeaways from music by the Police- 1-use guitar & bass rhythmically, and drums melodically. 2-melodic ideas can be constructed with component segments involving all instrumentation-including percussion in segments. 3- Rests can convert to dramatic pauses that can influence the importance of a song segment.
Favorite Police song ever..there are many but if I had to name just one, it would have to be “driven to tears”. Thanks for the video, good stuff and pretty accurate.

I remember the anticipation of Synchronicity, it was incredible. And lastly, thanks for mentioning the Shea Stadium show, I was so lucky to be there. The Police. The best.
i first became aware of The Police as a teenager when they were promoting the Sychronicity tour. A lot of their songs from previous albums got radio airplay, and I was like, "Oh, that's the same band that did Roxanne. And Bed's Too Big Without You. And Walking on the Moon. And Every Little Thing She Does is Magic. Oh. Oh my..." I came to own all five albums, and got to know their music really well.
Thanks for the video! I always liked the Police, but you made me go back and start listening to all their albums and they are better than I even knew! This is one of my favorite video series!
Good spot, but I'm guessing he thought "Sumner" has a silent "n" as in "autumn". That's why his pronunciation had a "fall". Good job he didn't have to mention any key gigs in "Lie sess turr" ;)
King of Pain, Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Roxanne, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Tea in the Sahara, Don't Stand So Close to Me- My Top 7.. really hard for me to narrow it down further.

Thank you. Excellent information and documentary. Your production of the entire piece with its audio and video clips are amazing. The police are one of my favorite bands. When I got early cable TV and watched MTV, the Police videos were always fun, and Stewart, Andy and Sting fights were well documented. Sting is an amazing artist, and plays a wicked guitar also. You can see bits of his guitar playing while jamming with a band on their "Police Around The World" film I think from the early 1980's. It's a great video all the way. I had read somewhere that the reason Sting was wearing sunglasses on the police's first TV appearance was that Sting had irritated his eyes earlier by spraying a dye substance in his hair before the TV appearance ,causing his eyes to be not looking their best. I got to see the Police at the height of the band's fame. Rochester, NY, Summer of 1983 at now long demolished Aquinas (Hollander) Stadium. I remember winning tickets to the Synchronicity tour after naming the song question from a local radio station of the Hollies, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." Concert line-up - The Flock of Seagulls, The Fixx, and the Police. First song of the Police, "King Of Pain," Sting on Bass, a back-up musician on key boards behind him attempting to play the opening chords to King of Pain, but is doing the wrong chords.. Sting, quite irritated, walks back, bends over the keyboard and shows the player how to play the correct chords. Anyway, a fantastic outdoor, afternoon concert. But my one take away was that funny opening moment with "King Of Pain." 😃
I grew up listening to The Police. Saw them probably a dozen times in the late 70s and early 80s, including the Shea Stadium Concert, and two times on their reunion tour of '08/'09. The show at Red Rocks in Denver was beyond magical, especially "Walking On The Moon," performed under a full moon. Simply put, the artistry and wizardry of Sting, Stuart, and Andy made The Police the greatest rock band ever, at least to me.
Let's not forget how technically sound they were as well - Stewart Copeland is still considered one of the greatest drummers of all time to this day, and Sting ranks highly in lists of bass players. Andy Summer is sadly criminally underrated as a guitarist.
As I've said numerous times before they were/are infinitely better musicians than any of the big contemporary groups including Coldplay. No comparison in fact. No doubt others especially the Gen Z crowd will bitterly disagree. Not stating an opinion but a fact
@@mattbeatgoesonIt's a such a shame that with the advent of the dreadful Rave scene aswell as Simon Cowell's intrusion into the commercial music field British groups with great musical ability have been very rare. No longer of importance to the Gen Z crowd especially. There are some fantastic young musicians now but sadly they're professional & session artists generally
One of my all time favorite bands, it’s so fascinating to see how their time together shaped up. They have the same sort of thing as The Beatles in that both groups were only together for a relatively brief period, had the one consistent lineup for the vast majority of their recording and touring history, and broke up while they were still extremely popular and in the spotlight. My favorite Police song is probably Synchronicity II although for an underrated tune I absolutely adore Canary in a Coalmine and find myself humming it quite a bit.
Voices Inside My Head and Bombs Away are the personal faves for their intensity of groove. Message in a Bottle was a lead vocal number for me, in my coverband era (2009-2015), with one of the earliest performances of it being a Tea Party rally in a baseball stadium, of all places. The band was doing a 1-hour warmup pre-rally, and Message was the set's closer. I could read the crowd and the moment, and before the refrain of "sending out an S.O.S.," I exhorted the crowd of about 6k to their feet to "sing along for our country." It was quite a moment, when the crowd did as I commanded. The lead guitarist's eyes gleamed, and he flashed a big grin, knowing that I had just put the audience in the palm of our collective hand. The drummer/bandleader's comment to me afterwards was that he was going to put me to work a lot. Being a rock star, even if only for a moment, means knowing how to become larger than life. Consider this another vote for doing a video on The Who, but I double dare an effort on Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Now THAT's a trio that we'll never see the likes of, again.
Another great Beat Goes On video! Love The Police. I saw them on that 1980 tour - floor seats at the LA Sports Arena for $9.75. People may make fun of me for being a boomer, but I saw many, many awesome concerts, all for around that price. One of the benefits of growing up in that era of music.
Some might make fun of you, but personally as a 20 year old I’m jealous of you! I hate the fact that I’ll never see my favorite bands live because almost all of them are dead/not together anymore.
@@Chillydall02 Each era has its perks. I'd say I envy you growing up in the era of technology, enabling you to accomplish more than I could when I was in my 20s.

I love the music stuff you do on this channel Mr Beat, and also, I would love it if you made a video about The Grateful Dead, so please consider then for a future video!
My favourite Police song is probably King of Pain. Their Best Of was the soundtrack to many long car journeys down to Devon and Cornwall for summer holidays, with my parents both singing along in the front seats... including to the songs that have darker meanings (Every Breath and Don't Stand So Close). I'd love to see you cover any of the following in the future: XTC Sonic Youth 10CC Silver Jews Sleater-Kinney Pavement
"The Beat Goes On" states that the Police sold even more tickets at Shea Stadium in NYC than the Beatles. But it's important to note that before the Beatles the whole concept of playing entire stadiums and arenas didn't even exist. They started the whole idea! Or at least their managers did. They were so huge that the usual venues back then like clubs and theaters just wasn't cutting it. Ironically their very first stadium concert was at the Shea Stadium mentioned. So the Police, and all the other bands of today have the Beatles to thank for that. Just one of the many ways the Beatles changed the whole music scene. Continually paving the way... Breaking new ground and breaking new records!
I've always loved the Police, as a drummer myself, Stewarts drumming has always been in my no order top list drummers, Sting always loved his bass lines and his vocals are great, when you hear them you know it's Sting. Had the chance to see them when I was 16 in the mid 2000's reunion tour, it was fantastic
Do one of these on Def Leppard. Their story doesn't always get the attention it deserves. The fact that their drummer managed to reteach himself how to play after losing one in a car accident is nothing short of remarkable.
What's your favorite song by The Police?

He was the missing piece of the puzzle. Already a guitar master when he joined the Police and could literally play any style: punk, jazz, Rock, reggae and even classical
He was already pretty famous amongst musicians in London in the 60s. He was a child prodigy too, playing in bands in his teens.

Yeah that was pretty pathetic. Why even bother with the rest?
Thanks for this, brilliantly done, I have loved them since the early days and still love listening to their music or watching them on video. Brilliant band and as you say the music and the sound will certainly last!
Do ELP NEXT…
Emperson, Lake & Palmer?
@@mattbeatgoeson yes…a progressive rock band from the 70s
When Mr Beat uploads you know its gonna a good video
Would love a video covering Deep Purple and their history and influence in music
I love the music stuff you do on this channel Mr Beat, and also, I would love it if you made a video about The Grateful Dead, so please consider then for a future video!
Right on, and thank you!
Please do Sound Garden if you haven’t already!
I haven't yet, surprisingly!
He'd likely call them Soundgraden, and the singer Chris Cornbread.
i have been waiting for you to make a video on the police! thank you!
Deep Purple next please
Eventually probably
I had absolutely no idea mr beat has another youtube channel
Is this a parody channel? You mispronounced Sting’s birth name and the name of his original band within the first minute of the video.
Don't write your copy when drunk, I suppose.
My favourite Police song is probably King of Pain. Their Best Of was the soundtrack to many long car journeys down to Devon and Cornwall for summer holidays, with my parents both singing along in the front seats... including to the songs that have darker meanings (Every Breath and Don't Stand So Close).
I'd love to see you cover any of the following in the future:
XTC
Sonic Youth
10CC
Silver Jews
Sleater-Kinney
Pavement
seeing that this got posted is the highlight of my day
also, bands i’d love to see videos on: the Cure, Depeche Mode, Oasis, RHCP, and Coldplay 😁
Petition for a KISS video.
Worst band ever
Eventually absolutely
Forgot Klark Kent in the begining of the Police career
The band Sting was in was called LAST EXIT.
Superb narrating 👏
The Police and STING were my spirit animal life soundtrack thru HS& college
“Driven to Tears” has to be my favorite, but they have so many good ones.
Now I think we need a musical drama biopic film about the band called “Every Breath You Take”
The police have so many hits, yet they somehow still remain underrated.
The Police was always one of my favorite bands. A lot of their songs go hand in hand with my favorite memories in life.
Do one of these on Def Leppard. Their story doesn't always get the attention it deserves. The fact that their drummer managed to reteach himself how to play after losing one in a car accident is nothing short of remarkable.
You should do SilverChair
I'm not even fan, but I watched this fascinated. I genuinely had zero idea they were THIS huge a band...
Hey, it's that guy voice from Weird History. Immediately subscription.
Never a personal favourite, i must admit
Message in a Bottle is maybe the one song I could listen to 24/7 for a week and still want to hear it the following day!
I love these videos, because I hate researching...also can you do either Kiss or Misfits (the 2 bands)
