  • Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, that Moscow launched more than 10 years ago, has been the subject of multiple cinematic works by Ukrainian filmmakers. The Kyiv Independent sat down with film critic Kyrylo Pyshchykov to discuss five must-watch films that will help to understand this war better.

20 days in Mariupol is deeply upsetting. I was sobbing for the majority of the run-time, full on body heaving. The most tragic part for me was the police officer who wanted to record a message in English because he was convinced the rest of the world would intervene if they knew what was happening.

Watching the doc over and over. On Day One, watching the news & internet every day, the news does not brainwash me - this shows how angry I am. Since 2008, the Orange Revolution, and then in 2013, the Maidan Protest, the revolution, and the regime have been ongoing since 1905. So brutality & barbaric. Moscow is so evil. Ukraine, I am as New York, standing with you all the way 🇺🇦🫱🏽‍🫲🏽🇺🇸with respect and love

I found your comment looking for a doc I watched here that wasn't as dark as 20 Days- but inspiring. About a small town that went vigilante in the first days. Plz respond if you find it (very well done, full quality production).
I remember a 4 letter word starting with "B" prominent in the title(?).. if you happen to find it I hope you enjoy it and relay the title back- I'm having a hard time!

‘Maidan’ and ‘Donbas’ by Sergei Loznitsa both worthwhile viewing also.

Thank you, great review, I like the way this man talks about film and appreciate his selection. I've only seen 20 Days in Mariupol so far but I'd heard about some of the others - only Cherkasy and White Raven are completely new to me. I'm going to seek these out.
Kyrylo is right about the need for films that exercise different part of the brain... the first Ukrainian feature film I watched is Nashi Kotyky, at the end of 2022 (it was literally my xmas movie), and I loved it. The movie itself is really fun, and I have huge admiration for the people who made (and all the people who enjoyed) a silly, low-budget, upbeat movie about the war. It definitely has a "pre-full-scale-invasion" feel about it, but it's a movie I often mention to people, and recommend to folks I know who like me are learning Ukrainian. 💙💛

@@kyivindependent Thanks for the reply! When I looked into Наші Котики I got the impression it may have been one of those that got "lost in covid" - I think it got released shortly before the start of the pandemic - and I hope it doesn't get forgotten. Now that I'm watching Ukrainian content more widely, I often come across that same type of humour and ingenuity.
Do you have a similar review of Ukrainian series, or a video about contemporary Ukrainian comedy? I recently watched Зозулі on TH-cam, and I've started watching Карлос в Україні - I think that a lot could be said about wartime comedies, it could make a great video if it hasn't already been done. 💙💛

Just seeing bits of the trailer for 20 Days in Mariupol I start to feel very emotional. It's unlikely I'll ever watch the film again in its entirety, but it's a film I think every adult should see once. Especially those hesitant to support Ukraine. I've not seen the others on this list, but they look interesting. The Earth is Blue as an Orange looks interesting, especially as someone whose a videographer and aspiring filmmaker myself.

Some people are too narcissistic to understand Ukraine's plight. My brother has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), and he quickly latched on to the Russian side without any moral sense or empathy for Ukrainian people. The Republican news media heavily influenced by Russian propaganda got him first. I wish he would one day wake up and be a normal level headed brother I can call friend, but NPD comes from a parent via genetics. Coincidently, Donald Trump has NPD as well which he got from his Daddy.

Russia entered the war in 2014 with "little green men".
Minsk was broken by russians first of all - the siege of Debaltseve was not halted, and heavy equipment and artillery was not withdrawn from the contact line as stated. Avdiivka was still being shelled.
The russian "peace plan" offered last week is not peace, it's a Ukrainian surrender.
Zelensky has banned all opposition parties and media because of martial law + all opposition parties are linked to russia and can cause political instability.
Ukrainian forces also did not shell the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant - it is hilarious seeing the russians trying to tell the international inspectors that "Ukraine shelled it!111" while the artillery tail is pointed towards the russian direction...
"this man is a total monster and will go down in history as one of..."
No, history will remember Zelensky as a hero. The only history who will depict Zelensky as you say is ruZZian history, provided that your state even continues to exist after the invasion.
