    Have you ever accidentally used a false friend in Portuguese??

    • @_caniche_2405

      Ah, I think many Portuguese students learning English fall for the "constipação" one as well. It was always an awkward moment when the English teachers didn't speak Portuguese and had no idea it was simply a false friend. 😅

      There are many false friends between Spanish and Portuguese. For example the word "salsa" (parsley) in Spanish means "sauce" (molho in Portuguese). Also the word "espantado": in Portuguese it has a positive connotation whilst in Spanish it means scared, ashamed or appalled. As for my experience, I've used many of them, for example, at a fish market in Portugal I asked the clerk to give me some fish and I asked him to clean it. He told me "Sim, vou tirar as escamas do peixe". I wasn't very experienced at the time, so I only heard "tirar... peixe" (to throw away in Spanish) and I was very confused.

      I've used 'Realmente?' instead of 'A sério?' Generally my intention has been understood and it only caused mild amusement.

    It's not really a false friend example but I find it pretty funny. One time I say to a non-portuguese friend I invited over to my place "Se quiseres podes descalçar-te" (which means "you can remove your shoes"). She pauses and looks at me completely surprised: "I'm sorry, what?!". She thought that I meant "You can take your pants off" because pants in portuguese is "calças", but the verbs "calçar" or "descalçar" only apply to putting on or removing shoes, respectively. A bit of an awkward moment there but we laughed so much after 🤣

      I LAUGHED SO MUCH READING THIS! Hahaha I never thought of that. But I do find the fact that there are verbs for take your shoes on an off funny, I always forget to use them. Thank you for sharing Pedro

    Great content. As a portuguese "Posso experimentar o gelado?" sounds a bit unnatural. I think most people would say "Posso provar o gelado?". "Posso experimentar?" sounds more natural in other contexts, like a clothing shop.

    Another great lesson, thanks a lot. Related to this, what about a session on useful Portuguese words that don’t really have an equivalent in English? I was brought up in Greece and we used, and still use, lots of Greek words in our English since they get the precise meaning across better. The closest I can think of in Portuguese is when my step-daughters are telling my daughters to budge up - on the sofa, say, or in the car - and they say, in English, “come on, encostate!”
    When my kids were small we used - in English as well as Portuguese - tens “doi-doi?” and dar “tão-tão” , the latter being what they would do to the naughty table corner that had hurt them.

    Very useful for non-natives, congrats. One common false friend in the opposite direction is when Portuguese people want to translate the portuguese word "resumo" and say "resume", when in fact they should say "summary", for example. People from other nationalities get really confused when they hear a Portuguese saying something like "so, in resume, this is what I mean...".

    While "pretender" and "particular" are correctly used as your examples, I do know I have used those words as well in the sense of the false friend, so watch out. "Pretender" has many uses, one of which is also "to fake/pretend", granted it is more uncommon. "particular" is also a synonym to "específico" which is basically the same as "particular" in English. So while listening one shouldn't assume outright that's what they mean, I, as a native Portuguese, would not misunderstand should they be used in those "false friend" contexts whatsoever.

      @@ogator8642 Yes, I think so. But for me, the fascinating thing is that "academia" can refer to a place for physical education, and "ginasio" to a place for intellectual education - just the opposite to English.

      @MsYesunglover 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Attention learners, this isn't right. In Portugal "academia" has the same meaning as the English word "academy", you LEARN things. And "gymnasium" is "ginásio", same as English too. Also @mark br isn't right, you NEVER say "ginásio" as "secondary school", instead you say "escola secundária". You have a "gym" at your school where have PE and that's it.

    Horrible but also hilarious example. 30 years ago when my husband invited me to his familie's home. I was nervous and new to his language. Later that evening we were all having coffee in the den, I softly said to my fiance', where is my Kiss? After an hour of mass hysteria, I discovered there is a slang word similar to this which in my poor accent I inadvertantly had said. So instead I said, where is my...vajayjay . Awful experiences can sometime be funny memories. In time🤣

    Another false friends:
    i) "atual" which means "current" (and not "actual"). "Actual" translates to "real", "verdadeiro" in Portuguese.
