  • The Macchi C.202 Folgore (Italian "thunderbolt"), Regia Aeronautica main fighter of WW2, was an Italian fighter aircraft developed and manufactured by Macchi Aeronautica. It was operated mainly by the Regia Aeronautica (RA; Royal (Italian) Air Force) in and around the Second World War. According to aviation author David Mondey, the Folgore has been considered to be one of the best wartime fighters to serve in large numbers with the Regia Aeronautica.
    The C.202 was designed by a team headed by the company's chief of design, Italian aeronautics engineer Mario Castoldi. As per company tradition, Macchi aircraft designed by Mario Castoldi received the "C" letter in their model designation, hence the Folgore is commonly referred to as the C.202 or MC.202. The C.202 was a development of the earlier C.200 Saetta, powered by an Italian-built version of the German Daimler-Benz DB 601Aa engine and featuring a redesigned fuselage for greater streamlining.
    During July 1941, the Folgore went into service with the Regia Aeronautica. In combat, it very quickly proved itself to be an effective and deadly dogfighter against its contemporaries. During its service life, the C.202 was deployed on all fronts in which Italy was involved.
    During late 1941, it commenced offensive operations over Malta and in North Africa, where Italian and German forces were engaged in heavy combat against British and later American operations. The C.202 continued to be used in North Africa as late as mid-1943, by which point the type was withdrawn to support defensive efforts in Sicily and the Italian mainland following their invasion by Allied forces. It also saw limited use on the Eastern Front. Following the 1943 Armistice with Italy, the type was mostly used as a trainer aircraft. It was also operated by Croatia.
    During mid-1942, in North Africa, the Folgore achieved a ratio kill/loss better than that of the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
    The Australian ace Clive Caldwell, who fought a wide variety of German, Italian and Japanese fighters during 1941-45, later stated that the C.202 was "one of the best and most undervalued of fighters".

      Actually even the the MC200 was very good.
      Or the G.50,cr.42,cr32 managed to shoot down some more modern planes.
      All the Reggianes were great, the MC205 same, also the G55.

      @@McRocketHad they produced the engine earlier , under license of course , things might have been different in the North African theatre. Problem was that the Italians didn’t have the industrial capacity to produce significant numbers of engines, let alone planes.
      Regarding the 202 , for the life of me , I don’t know what their military command was thinking to have it so lightly armed. Only two 50 caliber guns. Seriously ?
      The mc205 and Fiat g55 addressed that issue and they were formidably armed , but too little ,too late!

    One of the most beautiful aircraft of WWII.
    And a formidable fighter, as well.

    "....Sleek, supremely fast - the sight of their high, white-crossed fin would have struck fear into our hearts had the Italians pressed home their attacks.
    The odd pilot proved that the 202 was capable of mixing it in a dogfight - out-turning our P-40s with ease; but the majority would pull away effortlessly into a climbing roll or a roll off the top when things became at all hectic.
    There is nothing more exasperating, when you are caning fifty-four inches of boost out of an engine, than to see your enemy indulge in carefree aerobatics; but although we did our damnedest to get near enough to shoot at them,we seldom succeeded. Their aircraft was superior to ours on all counts. No wonder we wanted to fly one...."

    Italy had some fantastic aircraft firms, beautiful aircraft, with the C.205, Re.2005 and G.55 it would have been interesting to see how they might have developed later on in the war as in 1943 they were all on par or better than any other nations fighters

      Many people as you name this aircraft "underarmed" but...the standard version had 2x12,7 + 2x7,7 and the 12,7s had shells piercing and explosive while the contemp orary his adversary only piercing...so this difference reduces much the gap,I think, and let you understan d how it is less underarmed than you could say.

    This aircraft was a beauty and an excellent piece of italian design - I can not understand how engineer Castoldi commited the blatant design flaw seen at 2:52. If you want to improve pilot's back view, then the upper keel should habe been eliminated and a bubble-style back canopy installed to avoid that drag-inducting gap between canopy and fuselage.

    • @AaaBbb-ff1pn
      @AaaBbb-ff1pn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      italian pilots have a long experienced with open cockpit during spain war an schneider experience. They love to fly using the "wind noise". Castoldi have an hard time to convince them to the closed cockpit concept. As far as i understood they later add the canopy more like an "after thought" and here we are with that.... keep in mind that italian industry didn't have the capacity to produce bubble canopy in large amount, so they work out with what they have...

    I find the blue soundtrack extremely appropriate, in memoriam of all those Italian airmen who lost their lives in a useless fight against far superior enemies. Blame on the politicians who threw Italy into a non winnable war.

      Blame GERMANY that broke the Pact of Steel 4 months after signing dragging an unprepared Italy into WWII and zero help to Italian forces during the war except for conveniently intervening in Greece after Italy had the Greeks 90% defeated.
