- Heatblur, in association with Eagle Dynamics was kind enough to give me a preview build of the F-4 Phantom, to evaluate and create some content ahead of its release on May 21, 2024. This module is the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and builds upon the experience learned from Heatblur's previous modules. In this first look, I give my initial impressions of this highly anticipated module.
The F-4E Phantom II was an all-weather fighter that served with distinction with the US Armed forces and as a successful export fighter around the world. This teaser is just a taste of what I have planned, including a first impression review and a tutorial series, much like that for the A-4. Stay tuned and enjoy!

I'm Sport, a real world aviator and content creator with a passion for aviation and combat flight simulations. I don't post nearly as much as I want to, or should, but when I do it'll be mostly of Digital Combat Simulator (DCS), a full-fidelity combat flight sim with study-level replications of combat aircraft ranging from WWII to today. I'm always open to feedback and requests and hope you enjoy the content! - เกม
They gave THIS guy a preview to the F-4?!? Good. The most thorough and informative content for DCS.
Yep. While almost every other content creator with access is just flying missions for us to watch, here we actually get an actual LOOK at the F-4 and how it’s not just “anothe module”
A-4 and F-4 are the one true pairing.
Cant wait for intruder
Doesn't bother me at all that content creators get early access. Love it in fact. Valuable info.
This module make me appreciate how far we have come. I'm old enough that my first video game was pong. Just a few bits and pixels on a screen. And now we are every inching closer and closer to photo realistic sims.
FINALLY someone doing an ACTUAL preview not just a "hey look what i got early access to"
70’s -early 80’s is my favorite period for combat aircraft. The F-4 is something I’ve been waiting for a long time. Now we need the A-7, A-6 and maybe a Jaguar
Finally some one other than the grim reapers, thank god.
You’re safe now step-bro
LOL
This has to be THE BEST F-4 preview I've seen. The cinematics and production are top notch Sport!
Looking forward to your tutorial series
And from your opening blur shift closeups you just earned a new sub.
Yes, he did it beautifully.
Can't wait for your tutorials on this one
Hey Sport. Great video!! The Nellis content was my favorite part and it felt like the real deal, having spent countless hours on that flightline. . The F-4's just felt natural being on that tarmac. I also liked your narration and explanation of the Phantom's flight characteristics Appreciate the hard work. Keep it up. Looking forward to flying this module... Wait's almost over.
They taxi with the canopies open because the first rule of being a fighter pilot is to look cool above all else.
Simply amazing!!!!
I have it, and it is everything one would want and so much more, and thank you for basing it at my home town AFB Nellis.
Great video! I loved hearing your take.
Looks delicious, thanks for the great preview man
Such a well-put together video. Commenting for the algorithm gods.
I worked heavy maintenance on F-4s
78-82 .I haven't seen the office of an
F-4E since then . I'm impressed with
The realism of your work! I happened
To work on all ex Thunder Birds and
YF-4E #713 at Edwards AFB.....brings
Back a lot of memories most good
Some bad.....the Phantom was not
A maintenance friendly aircraft and if
you were not careful it WOULD bit you!
Imagine if we could also have an updated A-4 with the walleyes 😢
Very VERY well done good Sport :) ;) Thy!
Nice words, cool images, good content!
Looks really good! Ready to take it up for some test flights!
Very cool, thanks for the vid.
Great review!
You taxi so well
Careful, the yellow ones don’t stop
love your content
Immersion, yes!! Immersion!!!
Great video. I've been waiting 30 years for this airplane, and it looks like it was worth it. You never forget your first love! Thanks!
So stoked! It’ll be nice to be able to fly strike missions in something with teeth. Hopefully ED will fix the shrikes, and the walleye will be able to be utilized in the scooter, as well.
Great job
Dude this video was fantastic, thanks for the high quality content!
Glad you enjoyed it!
awesome!
Great review
That is a Vietnam Era ramp if I ever saw one. We just need the map!! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the preview! Looking forward to getting my own.
Absolutely nailed it man - great scripting, cinematics, and soundtrack. You did a great job convincing me that it feels like you thought it should, and that the feel of the mod was worth it.
Holy production quality!
Just come across your channel. I really like and respect the way you make videos. It’s fresh and has a relaxing realistic feel to it. Well done sir !
Absolutely great vid!!
Personally, I love watching the content creator work, and it gets me stoked for its release. You did an outstanding job! I've subscribed!
Glad I am already subscribed to this underrated channel. 👍
Excellent intro! Looking forward to more Videos 😎
Awesome video for a legendary fighter!
Replicating the over the shoulder camera angle for the spins from that old handling characteristics video was a nice touch :D
Truly outstanding work on this and all of your other content. You are extremely talented and I'm sure your channel will keep growing. Best wishes!
Great video pal and thanks for keeping us in mind. Yes we do get frustrated but when she is released all the frustration will fly away.
Great review. This is my most favourite jet of all time. Can’t wait to fly it.
Absolutely amazing, if this was my first vid of the F-4 it would convince me to buy it. You found a new sub!
The review i was waiting for!!
Thank you for demonstrating the adverse yaw characteristics of the Phantom. You've been the first to do so. Granted, VSN's Phrisbee highlighted it (rather excessively if you ask me) glad to see you also did. It's been a burning question for me.
I saw the black tail T-Bird and my heart skipped a beat!
The addition of the drogue chute deflating makes me wonder if we'll ever see more involved behaviors, like being able to disconnect it while sitting at an angle to the runway and throttled up a bit to blow it clear.
Thumbs up for the pilot in the cockpit !!!
Great video, you have got a new subscriber :)
Thanks for the "warts and all" review! You showed several warts that HB and many of the reviewers have been hiding, like the still chunky pilot animations in replay and multi-player. (HB's promo video fooled us into thinking they'd be smooth and I was amazed and impressed. But nope!)
*Followed!*
Good job!
Enigma’s server bout to be wild!
Blue vs Red soon becoming Phantom vs Phantom lol
@@theonefrancis696 😂
Im doing my part
Shill moment at 5:04! Bonus points for using NTTR
For the Algorithm!
For Gondor!
After what I saw in the F-14 Tomcat, I know that you can buy their products blindly. I have ordered it and am waiting for it to be available in the hangar.
I am really looking forward to spending some hours in this old bird! My VR headset sure showed up at the right time.....
Only say them a couple of times when I was in the forces. Definitely a hand fly aircraft
The canopies were also kept open because there was no real heating or cooling system for the cockpits in the phantom, so having the canopies closed on a sunny day in nevada or vietnam got stuffy real quick!
quality review
This module will get me to learn how to use the free look camera for first time.
I have waited SOOOOO long for a accurate F-4 simulation to be done. Actually I have waited since the late 1980's. Why it took so long I dont know but glad its finally here with only 2 mare days to wait before I can jump in the cockpit...I am glad it was Heatblur that was tasked with it and I am sure it will not disappoint. Cannot wait for the Naval version to be done...
"Fly good & don't suck" XD
The F4 looks amazing just as Heatblur's other aircraft, the only problem is the stale feeling of DCS.
One must become the brick
Nice video, this Mission looks pretty cool, especially with all the static objects and stuff like that. Could you upload it somewhere for us plebs on tuesday?
Thunderbirds check 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.... let's run' em up.
I need to study up on the type of demo they flew with the F-4😊
On the 21st, Im call in sick
Which Nellis template did you use in the video? I wish I had one like this for my first flights with the Phantom.
Great video! Watched the entire length! Just new to DCS and learning the ropes! Was the pilot animation a stutter in the recording or that is the way it is?
Which time stamp? Be happy to answer - but the pilot animations are usually at a slightly lower frame rate just to help save on computer resources
@@SportDCS Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Watched it again. Most distant head animations look fine but watch the segment from 5:40 to 6:00. Laughed when you mentioned “rivet counters” … but all so true for some. My 2080ti is hanging in there too. Not sure if I will make it to the 5 series! Blue skies! BTW Good editing for the music integration!
@@TheFlightLevel anytime! So the “stuttering” are mostly due to being a multiplayer track replay I recorded from. Not a whole lot I can do about that unless I record it live.
@@SportDCS Okay, copy that. Tough with multiplayer tracks!
We can say now that 3rd parties make better modules, and far more complete at launch, that ED itself.
And the MiG-23’s reputation never recovered
My main fear is that stuff like the F16, which is my main jet, will just feel less, compared to the F4. F16 might feel like an well made VSN mod next to the F4.
❤
My friends are mad at me for not pre ordering and that I "Pre Purchased" it I did that because I like testing patience.
The Ol’ “Double Ugly” ❤
F4e at its finest
For the algorithm
It will be interesting to see how much the phantom systems have in common with the A-4
I honestly have no idea what he meant by that 😄
@@hugoferrari6468 the A-4 is from a similar era, thus the way the systems are designed to be used seems similar. For example, in the A-4, the bombing system involves "designating" an impact point and then a gradual pull-up with the system releasing at the appropriate time. From what Ive seen on some other videos it looks like the Phantoms bombing system operates under a similar concept.
@@jabawocki9462 explanation made sense, thanks man
Is it reproduced in the DCS that the roll must be controlled by the rudder pedals during landing approach as in the real aircraft?
Sure is! Works great too!
Is a co-op flight in the back seat fun? What does the second guy do?
I'd like to see the wheel type menu for radio use also in DCS. They are too small and on a 3 screen setup hard to read when they are way off to the far edge. In front of my face is where they belong IMO
How is the performance on a full MP server with that 2080ti? With something like the Phantom? And is that card good for VR?
This Heatblur Phantom make me flying like the F-15 Eagle?
Why are the missile pods backwards @ 4:30? XD
To me it appears that they modeled the J79-8 engines, they ended up using the-10s to reduce the smoke trail…..just saying.
It’s amazing how much all pilots who received early access to this module carefully avoid showing the startup procedure. There is still no video demonstrating this procedure.
The cold start works great! However Heatblur asked that we wait to put out our own tutorials until they released theirs
@@SportDCSthat’s fair, I’m excited that they care this much about it which is a great sign for the module.
:)
dose it have a gryo assist gunsight?
Radar assisted actually! Much like the F-5
@@SportDCS great 👍
Does it have a gun? or gun pods?
Both! The firepower on this beast is insane!
F-4E radar tutorial?
👀
Yes I’m sure all the TH-camrs and streamers are pushing out big reports, lol.
Top speed?
Yes
@@SportDCS Common! What can she do?
@@ntme9 The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy. It first flew in 1958 and has seen extensive service in multiple branches of the U.S. military as well as in the air forces of several other countries.
### Top Speed Details
- **Mach 2.23:** The top speed is often cited as Mach 2.23. This means the F-4 can fly at over twice the speed of sound. The speed of sound (Mach 1) varies with altitude and temperature, but at standard atmospheric conditions at 36,000 feet, Mach 2.23 translates to approximately 1,472 miles per hour (2,370 kilometers per hour).
### Speed by Model and Configuration
The specific top speed can vary slightly based on the model and its configuration:
- **F-4B/C/D:** These early models, designed primarily for the Navy and Marine Corps, achieved top speeds around Mach 2.23.
- **F-4E:** This variant, featuring an internal M61 Vulcan cannon, also had similar top speed capabilities.
- **F-4J/S:** These improved versions for the Navy and Marine Corps, with upgraded avionics and radar, maintained similar top speed performance.
### Performance at Different Altitudes
- **High Altitude:** The maximum speed of Mach 2.23 is typically achieved at high altitudes (above 30,000 feet). At these altitudes, the air is thinner, reducing drag and allowing the aircraft to fly faster.
- **Sea Level:** The F-4's speed at sea level is lower due to higher air density, which increases drag. At lower altitudes, the maximum speed is generally around 750 knots (about 860 miles per hour or 1,380 kilometers per hour).
### Other Performance Characteristics
- **Climb Rate:** The F-4 Phantom II has an impressive rate of climb, capable of climbing at over 41,300 feet per minute (12,600 meters per minute).
- **Range:** The ferry range, which is the maximum range the aircraft can fly without refueling, is approximately 1,750 miles (2,816 kilometers) with external fuel tanks.
- **Service Ceiling:** The service ceiling, or the maximum altitude at which the aircraft can sustain level flight, is around 60,000 feet (18,290 meters).
### Engines
The F-4 Phantom II is powered by two General Electric J79 turbojet engines. These engines provide significant thrust, which contributes to the aircraft's high speed and performance capabilities. Each engine produces approximately 17,900 pounds of thrust with afterburner.
### Operational Use
- **Interceptor Role:** Its high speed made it an excellent interceptor, capable of quickly reaching and engaging enemy aircraft.
- **Fighter-Bomber Role:** The F-4 was also used as a fighter-bomber, carrying a wide range of air-to-ground munitions for strike missions.
- **Reconnaissance Role:** Certain variants, like the RF-4, were modified for reconnaissance missions, equipped with cameras and sensors.
The F-4 Phantom II's combination of speed, firepower, and versatility made it one of the most formidable fighter jets of its era and a key player in multiple conflicts, including the Vietnam War. It remained in service for many decades, with some air forces continuing to operate upgraded versions well into the 21st century.
@@SportDCS oh good God I know what Wikipedia says lol... What can she do in game?
@@ntme9 haha Phantom go brrrrrrr
But really I had it right at Mach 2.0 at 33,000 feet on a completely clean jet
That is so cool they have a nellis afb map . I still remember seeing the f4s and the A7Ds when my dad was stationed there
Man I’d love to have an A-7D model to populate the ramp with! I’m a sucker for authenticity
What would be cool also is if they make one for the f111 the f105 the f100 the f104 and the f102
You could have a base full of planes from the cold war era
@@marklemcke3321 Stick around... I know of at least 1 dev who has the green light for the Century Series to come!
