In normal employment scenarios, an STT radar lockon provides the AIM-7 Sparrow with the necessary information about the target to track and hopefully hit it. However, there are situations where obtaining the lock is not immediate or feasible. The F-4E has several tools for such complex cases, from the Stab switch to CAA or manual employment. This video discusses Boresight mode.

When I bought the F-4 module I was under the impression that there would be no math on the test.
You bought a plane from the 60s and thought that? 😆
I thought Jester would do it! Lol…luckily I think he can. That, or I can just skip LGBs and enjoy my Walleys
@@ziepex7009 I'm shocked I didn't get a slide rule in the mail with my vinyl lol.....
Your timing is impeccable. Earlier today I began experimenting with several radar commands that I have edited into the front seat bind lua and BST is one of those commands. Jester will not interfere when his presence is set to disabled. Thank you again for an informative video.
Excellent overview!
Top Notch as always. great job on kneeboard, impressive. THANKS
this might be the most informative video on the radar yet!
Nice, been waiting on this one!
Great video!
How do you do it with Jester though?
awesome
You might have mentioned it or not, didn't catch it, but depending on the weapon selected, CAA mode will attempt to lock in that area. Example: With RADAR selected, Pressing CAA will search the Right portion of the radar and not the center. This is crucial when attempting to BST a target and then pressing CAA on a target that's off your nose. Depending on a lot of factors you might lock something else that's not entirely intended.
So its advised to if you're using CAA in BST - make sure your heaters are selected so it will scan down the center. But even still I find myself locking onto clutter than the target in this mode. Usually just let Jester lock in BST and hope for the best. D:
How do you tell Jester to lock in BST? I didnt find it in the menu and when I switched seats to manually set BST myself, Jester switched back to his standard scan when I entered pilot seat.
@@gunschel You Cage (BST) Then you use the Jester Context Menu when you have the target in your reticle. A single click he'll lock onto the contact (or attempt to depending your angle). In every case its better to be below the target than above it due to the clutter.
@@Whuping You have answered your own
query
I covered this last year. The pinky works as a weapon and channel selector for CAA, but it is not related to boresight. Boresight and Cage look similar, but they are *extremely* different, don't mix them up.
@@FlyAndWire Is there a way to jump into Jester's seat, do your selections (BST and Aspect) then jump back into pilot without Jester changing your selections?
Is this a new channel ?
Why does your F-4E Cockpit look totally different to mine? is this a mod?
I don't use mods. What do you mean by "different cockpit"? oO"
Hes in the WSO seat.
Very informative. Still, I've found the cage and CAA mode for the pilot to be almost useless even in near perfect conditions. I don't know if this is the intended behavior of the AN/APQ-120 or a bug but Cage and CAA mode are comically unreliable at obtaining a lock when it matters the most. Even when it does manage to lock, it almost never provides a stable enough track to enable usage of the AIM-7. I've lost quite a few fights this past weekend that never should have made it past the merge because the radar was fighting me every second of the way. I have no idea what I may be doing wrong. The best luck I have with it is when I am looking up at a target and it is silhouetted against the sky to eliminate ground clutter. Its just to unreliable to be competitive in a wild multiplayer environment. Such a shame.
It's a 60s jet so no it's not going to be competitive in a multiplayer environment consisting of 14s,16s, 18s, 29s, 27s ect but that should be expected.
@@ntme9Firstly, the type of F4 Heatblur chose to model is based off an F4E from the 1980s. It says so in the manual. Secondly, it is not competitive in a Cold War environment against near-peer aircraft. The radar is massively unreliable before the merge and it seems like it only works at random when using CAA. I’ve had better luck when Jester is able to lock the target but still, the reaction time required to be competitive on servers like contention or Enigma’s makes the radar’s drawbacks extremely apparent. I’ve tested it on custom missions. I flew 2-5 miles behind a Tu-95 and toggled Cage and CAA and the radar refused to lock. It makes me believe that it is a bug and not the actual performance of the radar system.
I believe caa is unable to provide guidance to sparrows
@@thorluis226 The training mission tells you to use CAA to target for the sparrows. Its funny because IRL Pilots reported that it was the missiles that were prone to failure and not the radar. Seems like its been flipped. XD
That's odd. It's been working out pretty well for me, whether the target is in some clutter or against the sky. I wouldn't know what to tell you. :/
2:33 Sorry but this is nonsensical. The boresight mode in APQ-120 should trigger lock warning in SPO-15. SPO-15 doesn't rely on changes in signal to detect a lock, but on signal being constantly present. If it doesn't it's basically a bug and/or AI limitation.
Not necessarily. Not many RWR detected CW, and depends on which update we are referring to. Same for other guidance methods. I need to check the Russian docs again, but IIRC, either the SPO-10 or -15 got an update specifically mentioning the AIM-54 Phoenix, for example. The Mirage F1's RWR during the Iran-Iraq was not capable of detecting incoming Phoenix either, for example (source: Cooper).
Aside from reality, DCS is DCS. It can be a bug, the AI, or both.
