Little known fact; there was a golfer 50 years earlier who had a very similar career to Norman, called Craig Wood. Like Norman, he was a popular golfer. Like Norman, he lost play offs in all four majors. Like Norman, he lost out because of freak events (notably Gene Sarazens albatross in the 1935 masters.) And like Norman, he was consistently finishing high up the leaderboards. Like Norman, he "only" won two majors. He finally won the masters in 1941, and followed it up with the US open. The second world war then caused all majors to be cancelled, by the time they restarted his prime was gone.
I really think Greg Norman had tiger or Jack talent...all the potential but he did not have their mind or backbone. That's the only difference in my eyes and it was a big one...jack or tiger would never collapse like that...Norman just wasn't born with that same mentality to be clutch under pressure like those two...thats always what put jack and tiger in their own class...

Losing a playoff in '87, with Mize & Seve, when Mize chipped in, losing US Open in a playoff, to Fuzzy Z, earlier on, losing the PGA champ one year, when Bob Tway holed out a bunker shot to win on the last hole, and several other times as well. No doubt he choked often, but also had some bad luck
Larry Mizes chip in will never be repeated as long as we live. It was not like Tigers at 2005, a perfect shot with the bonus of going in. Mizes shot would have rolled wat past the hole if it hadn't gone in, it was a fluke. No one will get that lucky on a shot again.

Those Cobra Golf Clubs that was actually my design whilst doing machine shop classes at Altona Nth Technical School 1985-1988 see Greg was simply handy with a bench grinder so no-one knew his equipment but failing to make the cut in his own tournament in 2007 meant the others were onto Cobra's and were doing weight training simply said Greg was past 40 years old and kept signing on.
I used to feel sorry for Greg for the bad luck he had at the Masters but then I discovered how much of a prick he is. Then I was happy he choked away those majors.
Yah my Uncle had an opportunity to get in the clubhouse with the pros (tickets from a co-worker) and he met Greg Norman and Ernie Els. He introduced himself and asked both for an autograph. He said Norman just signed the visor (which I saw later) and flicked it at him without saying anything. Els actually chatted with him for a while and was a really nice guy. lol.

So everyone thought finally Norman was going to win a Masters, finally there was some justice after Mize 87 and Nicklaus 86 and other times. And in the final round no one thought Norman was out of it until he put that ball in the water on 16, everyone knew he was perfectly capable of going birdie birdie birdie on the last 3 holes. So its like he had multiple chances to come back throughout the back 9, he was the best player in the world, so not even Faldo fans thought he was out of it until the 16th. Young people who werent around then think of him as a choker through ignorance, citing that day, but its really the only time you could really say that, sure he had below average final rounds in the past where he played 2 over or something like the 95 US Open, but the other guy also had the round of their lives which they never did before or since, theres a longgg list of those players, so people thought of him as unlucky, not a choker.

That is why they have a total of 42 majors. Jack said he willed the ball in the hole. Norman could hit that drive, don't get me wrong. But no masters, no pga and no U.S. open. Thank goodness for the Brittish opens or Norman would have went down as one of the best players never to win a major.
He used too much hands in the swing. That's why the shaft of his club would fly around and hit him in the back like that. More hands in the swing can bring more variables and lead to inconsistencies...timing has to be perfect. I think that hurt him in the big spots as much as the "mental game".
