younger viewers who werent around then, dont understand that no one, absolutely NO ONE thought Greg Norman would lose before that round. He was the number 1 player in the world, he had been the number 1 for a few years at that point. No one really thought of him as a choker before that either, everyone thought of him as the best player in the world who was very unlucky in the past with guys holing unbelievable shots against him, which he was, but before that round the question was how many was he going to win by, what scoring records were in jeopardy? will he just put a 64 or 65 on the board and embarrass Nick Faldo? Not even the strongest craziest Nick Faldo fans thought he had a chance to win before that round. The absolute worst Greg Norman could shoot was around even, which meant Nick Faldo had to have the round of his life, which wasnt going to happen because Greg was the best player in the world and would have been able to respond if he needed to. So everyone thought finally Norman was going to win a Masters, finally there was some justice after Mize 87 and Nicklaus 86 and other times. And in the final round no one thought Norman was out of it until he put that ball in the water on 16, everyone knew he was perfectly capable of going birdie birdie birdie on the last 3 holes. So its like he had multiple chances to come back throughout the back 9, he was the best player in the world, so not even Faldo fans thought he was out of it until the 16th. Young people who werent around then think of him as a choker through ignorance, citing that day, but its really the only time you could really say that, sure he had below average final rounds in the past where he played 2 over or something like the 95 US Open, but the other guy also had the round of their lives which they never did before or since, theres a longgg list of those players, so people thought of him as unlucky, not a choker.

I’m no young kid, and quite frankly, I saw it all happen either live or on TV. Frankly, Norman choked plain and simple. He had the lead in so many other majors and blew them all except two for someone who was supposed to be number one he couldn’t close out any major and then tiger came along and then he couldn’t realize he was done. He created so many disasters on and off the course to liv golf. To putting radios in golf carts, turning golf from a sanctuary into a wrestling event, he should go home to Australia and shame he treated his playing partners like garbage, and he tried to destroy the history of the sport with his new way of redesigning it I’m glad the guy never won really worth a damn he was one player I detested from day one.

@@jmirr69 yeah you said it all really, hes someone you detested from day one, so your opinion of he chocked lots of times is just that, your opinion, from a bitter guy. I watched them all too and no he didnt choke until 96, he sprayed his approach into 18 in 86 but that was one shot, it can happen to anyone, he was thought of as unlucky which he was, its only young clowns now who think he always choked. I doubt you were there watching them all, I think you are full of it. When did he choke before 96? "Supposed to be number one" how do you think he got to number one you clown? it was charity? he got there from winning so many events and playing better than anyone else. He was number 1 for longest of anyone except Woods so dont make a fool of yourself, too late. Yes what he did with liv was a disgrace, and its a shame, it wasnt just him, the PGA Tour head was just as bad, but cant take away his achievements and how good he was.

The shot into the middle of the pond at 16 was horrific. I assume his mind was mush by then but even on autopilot he should be able to hit it on the green! He hit another hideous shot in the 86 masters to allow Jack to win. Couldn’t seem to grind out the score when he needed it.

Little known fact; there was a golfer 50 years earlier who had a very similar career to Norman, called Craig Wood. Like Norman, he was a popular golfer. Like Norman, he lost play offs in all four majors. Like Norman, he lost out because of freak events (notably Gene Sarazens albatross in the 1935 masters.) And like Norman, he was consistently finishing high up the leaderboards. Like Norman, he "only" won two majors. He finally won the masters in 1941, and followed it up with the US open. The second world war then caused all majors to be cancelled, by the time they restarted his prime was gone.

Yah my Uncle had an opportunity to get in the clubhouse with the pros (tickets from a co-worker) and he met Greg Norman and Ernie Els. He introduced himself and asked both for an autograph. He said Norman just signed the visor (which I saw later) and flicked it at him without saying anything. Els actually chatted with him for a while and was a really nice guy. lol.
