    I had the fortunate chance of seeing The Souvenir at the Berlin Internationa Film Festival. It was the best movie I have seen in a long time. Absolutely everything about this film was so elegantly done and there was no minute passing by where I felt uninterested. Loved the characters, the actors and especially the writing and the direction. Joanna Hogg really showed off with this one. I am glad to see this film getting picked up by A24. I am also super stoked for the second part!

      And now that you’ve seen the sequel what, pray tell, is your view on Hogg’s The Souvenir ?

    • @PaulBradin
      @PaulBradin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ledeyabaklykova I will say that I still like part one more than part two. It probably met me at a better time in my life where a lot of the Julie´s character traits resonated with me. To me part two mostly feels like an afterthought but a necessary one. If I hadn´t seen the films years apart from each other it would probably not make much sense to seperate them that much because they are kind of one film. But I think that the time that has passed in between is important to consider in relation to the autobiographical aspect of the film. After the Souvenir Part One so many people (including myself) discovered Hogg´s work and started to dissect her filmmaking. So her artistic style and becoming was much more in focus. The second part mostly tells a story of how Julie is able to find confidence in her own work while still telling stories from a personal place. But of course Hogg did not make the films that we see in the Souvenir. Her artistic becoming took longer but of course already startet back then. So by the end of Part Two The Souvenir has really become a becoming your own person film that only now really manifests Hogg as a director herself now and in the past. We also see Hogg´s style develop quite dramatically. Scenes are even shorter, there´s more needledrops, the cast is bigger but less focussed. She is having more fun with this world but everything feels lighter than in the beginning. With that the last scene in the film is the perfect and only possible ending. I´ll have to watch them again back to back to get more of a feeling how they flow into each other though.

    Peter Bradshaw said it was like social realist cinema but concentrating on poshos rather than the working class, a la Mike Leigh, Alan Clark and Ken Loach. Sounds intriquing but I'm not sure I could sit through an entire screening of smarmy tossers smarming off without hurling my Dr Pepper at the screen.

    Stunning film! Like Merchant Ivory, but more austere. Hogg’s eye is remarkable. Every single shot is exquisitely composed. They re-created her flat from memory in an aircraft hangar (which I only found out subsequently - had wondered how the vistas looked so striking). The flat is where the majority of action takes place, and is used brilliantly as a character in itself. Watching the protagonists dance around each other, often divided, literally and emotionally, by the space, is powerful and sad. It is as much about what you see on screen as what you don’t. It has moments of great humour (the first half anyway, with Anthony’s absurdly pompous non-sequiturs - he loves Powell and Pressburger you see, lol, the sweetly intimate moment he complains his space in the bed is like a ledge, the notorious Richard Ayoade scene, and the torturously awkward lunch with her posho parents as they debate the IRA). The second half is much more tense, and becomes heart-breaking. Tom Burke is sublime as Anthony, the rogue-ish, drawling and mysterious aristo (or is he?). And the (real-life) mother-daughter pairing of Honor and Tilda Swinton is a master stroke, and source of incredible pathos. You feel every bit of the repression but underlying tenderness of their relationship. Some audiences were alienated by the film. I can’t relate to this. I relished every second .This is the reason I’m passionate about movies. The perfect translation of thought/feeling to the screen. And it never hurts when Robert Wyatt and The Fall get a soundtrack airing.

    i know he is older than her, but they dont look that much different in ages (even if he is like 16years older then she is). So its kinda hard to buy as an relationship with an older man. Its not like Rip Torn and the college coeds in The Man Who Fell To Earth, that is an older man dating younger women. This, is just pretty normal. Maybe its because she looks and seems like she is in her late thirties, instead of college age.

    This movie made me to remember a long-term relationship I used to have when I was 18. I fancied a guy who was working at a charity, 15 years older, a huge fan of Belle and Seb, and had bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He was my first love. He was kind, sweet, mysterious to me--but kept going off-the-ground a few times, and eventually vanished. I moved on, but now I know he was going through a hard time on his own and didn't even know what to do with that relationship. That whole experience was confusing and devastating for me, and I'd isolate myself from my friends and academic goals--I had a terrible grade at my art school that term. That depressing relationship made me grow up into who I am now, but I'd never go back if I have a chance. I used to curse this guy for a while, but after watching this movie--I'm not sure if he's even alive right now, but if he is, I just wish the best for him. Hope he doesn't have to deal with the darkness at all.

Most of the time, it's hard to find a movie that you can call is somewhat close to perfection as you only find that in some books. But this movie, it looks like it came from your own imagination.
